Hidden away just ten minutes from I95 and Amtrak, relax in the quiet comfort of a grand, old New England resort home. Enjoy the pleasure of one of the most beautiful beaches in the world five minutes away. Swim, skim, surf, read, picnic, fish. Start from the garden down a private, tree-shaded path. Alternatively, walk five minutes to town for the best ice cream and sundaes in the U.S. Shop and have something to eat at St. Claire’s Annex or the Olympia Tea Room watching the sun go down over the bay. Let your children ride on the oldest flying horse merry-go-round in the country – and cheer them on as they reach for the brass ring. Have a glass of wine and dinner on the Ocean House porch after a massage and spa treatment. Go back to work in NYC if you must, and take advantage of frequent trains from Westerly and New London.
The house, built on the 9th hole of one of the first golf courses in the U.S., sits on a hill, catching the afternoon breezes and shaded by a 100-year-old oak tree. Besides wi-fi and cable, it includes five bedrooms on the second floor and two baths, and two more bedrooms in the attic and a bath. In the basement is the old kitchen, great for arranging flowers or for additional cooking, a shower and another bath. Enjoy a beautiful, summer living room, spacious dining room, reading room, and large, wrap-around porch. Watch for over fifty varieties of birds, including wide turkeys, Osprey, hummingbirds and Gold Finches as you sit quietly in the garden. Play badminton, croquet, bocce, whiffle ball and catch on the lawn. After walking home from the beach, shower off outside, if you like. Perfect for a large family who want to enjoy the sun and sand – and the pleasures of a small, picturesque New England resort town – without
the hassles of driving and parking.
Watch Hill is within easy reach of Mystic and Stonington, Connecticut, the ferries to Long Island and Block Island, and even Providence and Boston. Saturday mornings you will undoubtedly enjoy the Stonington Farmers Market, right alongside the working fishing wharfs of Stonington Village. Afterwards, you can spend some time antiquing on Main Street in Westerly. Or spend the day at the Mystic Seaport or Mystic Aquarium. A pleasant ferry ride from New London will take you to the North Fork of Long Island for an afternoon of wine tasting, or you can drive to Galilee and catch the ferry to spend the day bicycling around Block Island (Alternatively, you can take a plane from the Westerly Airport.). Some of the best fishing in New England is easily accessible by charter from Watch Hill or simply from off the lighthouse rocks. In the evening, your children will love riding the merry-go-round in the village and getting ice cream at St. Clair’s Annex, catching crabs at the Weekapaug Breachway or taking a sail out of Mystic Harbor.
