Amazing

The property was amazing, it was very spacious, it had every appliance that you could wish for. However perhaps more importantly it was very private / peaceful, the pool was perfect, the views stunning, it had its own produce patch with peppers / onions / tomatoes / limes and exotic birds housed at the top of the garden which added a real ambience and atmosphere.

In all I cannot fault it and would love to go back. The owners were lovely people and I wish them all the best in their endeavours ...

Visiting Portugal and living in Casa Dos Penedos

tolj03 Stockholm/Sweden
Review Submitted: October 1, 2009 Date of Stay: September 2009
We are 5 grown ups from Sweden who was visiting Porto and the Douro Valley during one week in September 2009.

When we arrived from Porto airport to Casa Dos Penedos, were we warmly welcomed by the owning couple and informed about the house and it´s facilities. The owners speaks fluent english, so there is no problem to communicate.

The charming house is very tidy and fully equipped with all necessary things you need.
In the garden you will find different kinds of fruit and vegetables.
There is also a very pleasant swimmingpool with water warmed by a solarpanel system.
The house has a big veranda towards the valley of the river Douro. The view is fantastic. You can spend the night there just enjoying the view and the night sky.
You can´t find a better place to stay during your visit in the Douro area.

Some advice:

Driving is pretty though, up hill, down hill and the roads are very narrow and winding.
Thera are many roads to choose from when driving to your daily point of interest. Avoid the gravel roads, take the next one instead.
When renting a car, choose one with a GPS navigator. You´ll need it.
Don´t miss visiting the wineyards around Pinhao area and all the Port Wine producers in Porto.
About food, grilled sardines with potatoes and vegetables is a delicious meal.

Enjoy the country and all the nice people you will meet. Don´t hesitate trying to talk to them. They appreciate every little word you say, even if it´s in Spanish.

Have a good time.

Charming

Review Submitted: July 1, 2009 Date of Stay: June 2009
The house was lovely. Very clean and tranquil with distant church bells ringing across the river valley. The garden was beautiful, full of many flowers and fruits. The owner has peacocks and pheasants, which are in a cage in the upper property. It is in a very remote location. It took 20 minutes by car to get to the nearest town and an hour to drive in to Porto, so if you want to do a lot of sightseeing, take the driving time into consideration. We easily visited Mateus, Giumaraes and Porto while staying at the house, but the drive did get tiring at times. The house was very well stocked with everything you need to enjoy your visit. The owners, and the local caretakers, were very helpful when the water pump had a problem; it was taken care of immediately. There are many steps inside and outside the house.

Casa dos Penedos - Douro.

AWB Ireland
Review Submitted: June 12, 2009 Date of Stay: May 2009
he accommodation surpassed our expectations. The area is very scenic and the setting of the house outstanding. The property has beautiful features, is well stocked and very well presented (clean and tidy). We made fresh orange juice every morning from oranges that was plucked in the orchard. We enjoyed total privacy and found the owners very helpful and friendly.
There are a lot of breakable items on display. If you have small children you might consider to pack away a lot of breakables in the beginning of your stay.
You will not regret booking this exceptional villa with its solar heated pool and beautiful maintained garden. I also highly recommend the return boat trip from Regua to Pinio.

What a view!!

Lost in translation Wolverhampton, England
Review Submitted: November 13, 2008 Date of Stay: September 2008
Any one looking for a real get away from it all holiday and real culture, should head for this villa. The owners met us and were the only English speakers we met all week-make sure you pack your phrase book! This traditional villa is nestled amoung a few others but is very private and lovingly restored by the present owners. The other houses are occupied by locals-not tourists. In fact by the end of the week we had spotted a few tumble down homes on the opposite side of the river that we had planned and restored to perfection at the bottom of every bottle of vino verde we drank. This is a place waiting to be discovered-but I hope that know one will. The villa was well equipped to cook for the six of us -however it could accomodate a further two people in put-ups on the ground floor. The pool was the highlight for the four teens coming with us-very clean but only five loungers. There are steps and a slope up to the villa so not suitable for wheel chair users or young children. The house has four dining areas-two in two out. In fact we choose to eat at a different one every night. The table on the veranda over looking the river is the most beautiful, the veranda extends to overlook your neighbour-I spend many an idle moment watching them tend to their vines and baking bread in an outside oven. Yes it is a touch of the real Portugal. Every morning a van carrying the fresh fish beeps the horn in the street above your head-outside your back door-believe me you can get fresh sardines/squid/ bream or bass(still not sure which but tasted delicious) for quarter of the price at home. In the afternoon if you hang your bread bag out-the bread lady brings the best bread next to the French I have ever tasted.
Locally you will find a small shop (about one mile up-hill-not suitable to walk) and lots of local cafe/bars. However there is a large supermarket about six miles away in Marcedos which has a good supply of local and international goods. There are plenty of things to do and see-and a golf course near a pretty village about 8 miles away ( I managed to find it to take my two teens there).
My top tips are-if there are more than four of you-1. Hire two cars-not one mini bus. The roads and drivers are dangerous! 2. Take some cards/games-for after dinner-there is a t.v. and sky-but who wants to do that on holiday! 3. Find a good road map before you go-My rough guide had a poor map and I bought a Michelin which was a little better. 3. Be prepared for the odd firework
