Truly charming

  • 5 of 5
My family and I stayed here for a month this summer while our kitchen was being renovated in Brooklyn. The house was perfect for us.

The stone house is situated on a gorgeous piece of land on top of a hill that rolls down into an enchanting forest. My kids loved running around, playing on the hammock and exploring the land. There are two guinea hens that visit from time to time, and I was told by the owner that they eat ticks, which is why, I assume, we didn't find any during our month long stay!

Because the house is stone, it was nice and cool when it was hot outside. And when it's hot there's a fabulous screen porch in the cabin next to the house. No A/C in the house but lots of fans which we prefer anyway.

The house is furnished with rustic simplicity. Carefully thought out art & furniture that feels true to the house. It's cozy and homey. The kitchen has every tool you might need to cook a big meal all the while looking out on the sloping lawn.

The house is just 90 min drive from NYC, and once you're there it's a 20 minute drive to New Paltz where you'll find great restaurants and farm stands. We hiked the Shawgunks and swam in nearby ponds and pools all summer.

The owner is lovely to deal with.
We had a perfectly wonderful summer in this house!

A perfect getaway from the city

  • 4 of 5
We had a wonderful stay here this past August! Kate and Bill were very accommodating and responsive to our wants and needs. They welcomed our children and our cats, and even bought a little pool for the kids to swim in. The house is lovely, beautiful and rustic, with lots of country charm. They have a well-maintained edible garden out front and a large lawn for relaxing and play. We took lots of nice day trips - it's about a 20 minute drive to New Paltz and the Shawangunk Mountains. It was the perfect summer house for our family! We would love to come back again.

A perfect delight

  • 5 of 5
As a native southern Californian looking for a mid-winter getaway in the Hudson Highlands, I couldn't have been more satisfied with my stay at Kate's delightful farmhouse. I was kept busy with crisp afternoon hikes in the nearby Shawangunk Mountains, a visit to the historic Dutch settlements of Huguenot Street in New Paltz, whiskey tasting at the Tuthilltown Spirits distillery, and the peerless collection of the Dia Beacon—all within 30 minutes of the house. But evenings spent reading by the fireplace were every bit as wonderful. In fact, if I had never left the property I would have been no less happy. Kate was the perfect host: generous and accommodating but also discreet and mindful of my privacy.

I’d highly recommend the cozy library guest room on the ground floor. If it weren’t for the presence of my iPad (yes, WiFi was available), I’d have thought that I had been transported to the 18th century.

Absolutely perfect in every way.

Now I’m looking forward to returning in the summer to experience another magical Hudson season.

A quiet getaway for getting centered

  • 4 of 5
I discovered this property through the recommendation of a friend and have stayed twice; once during Christmas week 2010 and once last summer.

Christmas that year was magical as we were snowed in by a massive blizzard and it could not have been more Christmasy or cozy. The owner, Kate, had a massive stock of firewood out back with which to feed the wood burning stove and we spent our evenings in the living room sitting by the fire, drinking wine, reading, web surfing or individually watching movies on our laptops.

There is a large eat in kitchen with modern appliances and we were able to have multiple people cooking at one time and could all sit down at the large table together.

I slept in the brass bed in the 'library' on the first floor and to my mind it was the best bedroom room in the house as it is next to the kitchen, a bathroom and the wood burning stove.

As an apartment dweller in Brooklyn I can not tell you how nice it was to be in a real, cozy home. It may sound crazy but for people like me even things like a washer and dryer are a luxury so when you add a fireplace and massive eat in kitchen to it it's almost over the top. Even simple things like the depth of the window sills ( perhaps a foot and half deep ) were charming and being there is a bit like going back in time. I can't even imagine how much work it must have been to build that house and can only wonder about the stories it could tell.

It snowed quite a bit that week but when we wanted to get some fresh air we hiked around the property or to the nature preserve which was about half a mile away.

It's a very quiet and peaceful place and so great to just sit out back and listen to the wind in the trees.

The owners were easy to deal with and communication was great . I would recommend this house to anyone who wants to get away from the city and get centered.

Outstanding!

I was looking for a quiet retreat away from the city life of Los Angeles and found it in the charming countryside outside of NYC. Kate's decorating style is simple, yet elegant and maintains a feeling of actually living in another era. I especially enjoyed having tea outside while listening to the sounds of nature and being able to actually see the stars at night. The hikes around the neighborhood and property were revitilizing to me. It was clean and well maintained and Kate was very helpful about activities and places to visit. I look forward to visiting again soon!
