The historical town of La Rochelle is the principal town in the Charente Maritime region famous for sailing, wind surfing and ocean based activities. To the North is the Vendee area, drained by the Huguenots, full of tiny waterways and pretty villages and well suited to long flat cycling trips; to the East are rolling hills and the towns of Poitier, Niort, St Jean D'Angel and Saintes. Here you will also find Cognac with it's many brandy distilleries. To the South, past miles of stunning sandy beaches forming the Cote Savage, are the wine producing regions of the Gironde penisular and the town of Bordeaux. All these attractions can be reached in less than two hours drive.
