SPACIOUS HOLIDAY HOUSE WITH A SUN-DRENCHED ROOF TERRACE AND FABULOUS VIEWS

Essaouira House Rental Photos and Description

Sleeps 8, 2 doubles, 2 twins, ensuite bathrooms, roof terrace , kitchen, salo

“This luxurious 4 bedroom townhouse is located a short walk from the cresent shaped beach of Essaouira and the fabulous Medina but the house offers peace and privacy that is unique to this property. The spacious living area includes an open plan kitchen-dining room which is fully equipped for self-catering. The housekeeper, who visits daily on request, can cook our guests delicious Moroccan tagines and couscous from our in-house menu. A comfortable salon with open fire has views over the town of Essaouira. Four traditionally decorated en-suite bedrooms are located over three floors and all have views of Essaouira towards the sea. The roof terrace offers spectacular panoramic views of the town, is sun drenched all day and faces the sea. The terrace has dining furniture and a pergola which is perfect for al fresco breakfast or dining on the warm Moroccan evenings and there are sun loungers for soaking up the Essaouiran sunshine on a beautiful day!

Day Trips: You can take short day trips to; Moulay Bouzerktoune a stretch of beach with a stronger side shore wind than Essaouira, and offers one of the best wave spots just outside Europe. In the winter with 2 - 5 meters waves this is a spot for confident wave sailors.

Sidi Kaouki to the south of Essaouira this is a 5 km long beach again with a cross shore wind and good waves in the winter. Conditions here can vary and with different entry points you will find the right waves for beginner and more advanced wave sailors.

Festivals - there are many world-famous festivals throughout the year in Essaouira, notably The Essaouira Gnaoua and World Music Festival (annually in June) - a celebration of the mysterious music of the Gnaouas, the product of a mystic tradition with branches as widespread as Haitian voodoo and Brazilian Candomblé.

Lindsey and Fiona purchased the property after visiting Essaouira for a half term adventure with their two school age children. They have been married for 14 years and live in the UK near Guildford. Fiona's mother was born in Demnat, in the Atlas Mountains to Christian missionary grandparents during WW2 and although her grandparents were not as successful in their mission as they would have liked Fiona grew up hearing many tales about the exotic and exciting country. When the opportunity arose to purchase a property in the country, and enjoy regular visits with their children, Lindsey, who speaks fluent French so could communicate easily, and Fiona couldn't resist the challenge.

Fiona Sutherland purchased this house in 2008

6 months before we purchased Dar Doughri the building was transformed from a two storey home into a 4 storey property with a panoramic roof terrace by an intrepid Englishman named Peter and his Moroccan friend Omar. We were looking for a spacious but well located property with a private and secure roof terrace that was well built and maintained that would not be blighted by the damp and noise that can pervade the riads within the Medina wall. Within 4 months of purchasing the house Dar Doughri was ready to receive guests and swiftly became one of the most successful rental properties in the area.

The close location of Dar Doughri near the Medina, beach and bustling town life combined with the sheltered but sun-drenched roof terrace and light and airy rooms made us fall in love with the property. The house is a balanced combination of modern living such as large windows, comfortable furniture and linens, and a fully equipped kitchen combined with traditional touches such as the huge tadelact bath, pod shower, traditional salon with open fire place. Its location is in a quiet residential street allows our guests to feel immersed in Moroccan life and culture while enjoying the peace and privacy that is essential on holiday. Essaouira is a family friendly destination where their whole family can enjoy the culture, shopping, delicious food and the fabulous beach all through the year.

LOVELY FEW DAYS IN ESSAOUIRA

  • 5 of 5
The house is ideally situated away from the hustle and bustle but within a few minutes walk of medina and beach. The accommodation is exactly as described and the services of Fouad make life a lot easier. We had breakfast and one evening meal cooked by Karima who is really sweet and this saves any shopping and cooking as eating out is reasonable. We really enjoyed haggling in the souks which are a lot more laid back than in Marrakech and seeing the fish market in full swing. Terrace is spacious and private but we didn't spend much time there as weather was a bit misty. We enjoyed out time here and wouldn't hesitate to recommend to anyone .....

A RELAXING WEEK FEBRUARY 2011

  • 4 of 5
My husband and I had a lovely week at Dar Doughri. We spent lazy days wandering around the Medina and the harbour or just sitting watching the locals going about their business. Everyone was very friendly and we never felt pressured to buy anything. We hired bikes for a couple of hours from a place near to where the camper vans park. They were in good condition and reasonably priced and the owner let us take them away without even paying a deposit. Karima was lovely and cooked us some delicious meals and we never went hungry for breakfast. We enjoyed sunbathing and having breakfast on the terrace. Fouad was very helpful if we needed anything. All in all a very enjoyable and relaxing week. (We did have the "moroccan funny tummy" but luckily it only lasted about 24 hours). We would recommend DD to our friends and hope to stay again one day.

TRADITIONAL LIVING IN ESSAOUIRA

  • 5 of 5
We visit Essaouira with 2 families, 4 adults, 4 children and 2 babies and found enough room for every one. The house is clean an hold in traditional style. The local team ist very good and professional. The lunch is good the breakfast the best we had in Marocco. The house is close to the medina and about 10 minutes walk to the beach. We would recommend it to families.

ANOTHER WEEK OF NOVEMBER SUN

  • 5 of 5
Returned for another November week of sunshine in Essaouira and the hospitality of Dar Doughri.

As per my previous review the standard of the property is 1st class. A couple of additions since last year. A very large bath has been installed in one of the bathrooms - ideal after a hard day of walking the beach and medina. Also broadband has now been installed which proved more reliable than at home (perhaps not difficult) and was useful for keeping up with news and in touch with the family.

Ate much more this year in the small cafes situated within the media and the quality was great and very reasonably priced. Did revisit Taros which is still my favourite for the special night out. Karima's cooked for us one night and produced a special beef tagine which was exceptional.

Took the two hour camel treck which I wasn't sure I'd really enjoy but was henpecked into it and actually found very enjoyable and you saw much more of the 'off track' scenery than you can by just walking. Would recommend.

Daily beers at the Chalet de la Plage enjoyed whilst watching the beach football.

A very relaxing break at Dar Doughri which I would thoroughly recommend

HIDDEN GEMS

  • 5 of 5
We flew to Morocco for a three week stay at Dar Doughri in late January and early February. The initial reason was to escape tne rigours of a long English winter, but in the event we enjoyed far more than an improvement in the temperature. The house was exactly as described except that Karima, the ever cheerful house-keeper, contributed far more than we had reasonably expected. That included 21 days of breakfasts, nearly as many dinners, wood fire lit as necessary, and the house kept wonderfully clean and tidy..The result was that the three artists in the group of eight were able to produce about 50 water colours and the rest of us were free to enjoy all sorts of unexpected adventures - though the fat lazy one simply slouched on the super roof terrace.
The charms of Essaouira's medina, fishing harbour and long sandy beach are all very visible but there is so much more which is less obvious. At one of the many tiny dark cell like work shops which line the inside of the medina wall to Bab Doukala we purchased a brilliantly colourful blanket woven on what could have been a pre-industrial revolution loom. We didn't seek to reduce the requested price, but we were honoured to share bread, olive oil and moroccan whiskey (mint tea) with the very friendly weavers whose work will be long admired in our home. That set a pattern that was to be repeated many more times.
One route onwards to the Place Moulay El Hassan is through the rear of the Mellah which does resemble a slightly tidied war zone. One of two remaining synagogues is, however, immaculately maintained by a non-jewish lady and again the local artisans are genuinely welcoming.
Indeed one of the best memories of the holiday was the friendliness of the people. At the Dar the television told of the unwinding events in Tunis and Egypt but we must record that in Essaouira and the surrounding area we never felt intimidated in any way. We never heard of or witnessed anything which would cause us not to re-visit.
We hired a car from a local company near to the Dar and enjoyed fresh fish luncheons up and down the coast. The trip to the Berber market at Idaougard, 25k to the south east was out of this, or indeed any recent century. It was brilliant - particularly for the five or so Berber barber patched tents set up in the middle of one of the donkey fields where the local lads swanked about the virtues of their four legged rather than two wheeled steeds.
We all hope to return next Winter..

DEC.29, 2010-JAN.7, 2011: FAMILY FRIENDLY!

  • 5 of 5
We were two families (one co, with kids 5 yrs old and under, who planned our New Year's break in Morocco, having never ever been to that country before.

I would highly recommend this Dar, based on location, the owner's helpful and timely suggestions and support in our plans, the convenience of cooking in a home-like setting, and the family-friendly atmosphere of the Dar and Essaouira in general. This whet out appetite for Morocco, and we hope to return one day.

We especially appreciated the well equipped DVD library that was suitable for our young children, and the comfy child friendly furnishings.

Karima and Fouad tried to pre-empt and modify things for us throughout, based on how we used the space and what we did each day in and around town.

My fave dish was the Beef Tangine (the one that needs 4 hours to cook; thought it was wonderfully flavourful, and even better than the seafood BBQ that we tried on our last night), and the second fave was the lamb and veg couscous. Also, a thing worth noting is that the fillo dish needs at least 2 days notice as it takes a lot of time to prepare, so ordering it the night before doesn't give them enough time. Fouad said not seek that dish outside of the Dar, as you wouldn't be sure of the freshness.

We had a brilliant time, despite the health (Moroccon funny tummy, I called it, which affected me and my girls, esp. the youngest) set-backs. The convenient and helpful staff a the pharmacy around the corner from the Dar were great at helping us out. One thing I would advise visitors is not to eat the salads, unless you know for certain that every veg used was washed in bottled/ filtered water, as I'm convinced that's what caused it - and I so loved the salads! Maybe installing an inexpensive faucet mounted water filter might help solve the problem. Althugh Fiona said it might also be the use of argon oil in cooking that might add to the problem. But then it could have very well been air borne, or my youngest love of drinking the bath water ;)

Another thing to note is that esp. as the city is so windy, not one merchant was selling kites! Thankfully our girls had brought their own, and so it might be a suggestion to visitors to bring their own kites (and other beach toy things), if that would interest them. The other small note is to bring ear plugs if you're a light sleeper, because especially the lower bedroom that faces the busy walk path & has a lot of later evening street noise from kids playing.
