Located at the end of a private lane off the main highway in Hubbards Cove, 'Bowsprit' Bungalow home is an ideal vacation destination. It is half way between Halifax and Lunenburg so it is a perfect 'home base' for exploring the many picturesque attractions that are just a drive away. Or just relax on site and sit out on either patio (west or south) or on the deck out front at the water's edge and watch the boat traffic in and out of the cove or the selection of wild life (overly-friendly seagulls and ducks, and the odd osprey and heron). The large grassy property includes a wharf launch and a private beach area for (invigorating) swimming. The view of the water is peaceful and ever-changing.
The home itself is completely winterized so it is also a great getaway during the colder months. The open area kitchen overlooks the large living room and separate dining area with panoramic west and south ocean views. The den has a 32 inch flat screen TV and a DVD and VHS player.
The stereo in the living room plays the radio and CDs, and Wi-Fi internet is available so you can stay in touch on your lap top from any part of the home. It is a great spot to rest in and relax or to write, study or work in a quiet and beautiful setting by the sea. This is not the place for loud parties or excessive noise. Sorry we are not able to accommodate smoking indoors--or pets (including the very small and well-behaved ones). A washer and dryer are available for use in the laundry room.
Just a few weeks ago my husband, 2 year old daughter and I spent 6 nights in Hubbards between visits with family on opposite ends of the province. We were looking for an ocean view in reasonable proximity to the city and this house delivered.
First and foremost, the location is amazing. I wouldn't hesitate to say that this house is in one of the best locations of the area. Especially for people with young children, this house has a large yard and is on a private road off the main highway. It is just a few minutes from Queensland beach. There is a playground at the school and is only 3 minutes from the grocery store. It was perfect for our needs and deserves 5* for it's location.
The house has more than enough amenities. There are 3 decks outside that allow for lots of family and friends to visit and enjoy the view. The kitchen is loaded with nice cutlery, dishes, pots and pans. It is very well equipped. The owner's artwork is tastefully displayed and suits the local seaside atmosphere. The decor is a bit dated but knowing that this was a family home, makes it comfortable, like visiting your grandparents place. I personally enjoyed looking through some of the century-old books. The pull out couch in the den may be from the 70s but my sister-in-law claims it to be the most comfortable hide-a-bed she's ever slept on. One of our favourite parts of staying at this vacation property was the wildlife. We spent a lot of time watching the resident groundhog from the deck with our daughter and had a few knocks on the patio door (really, this happens) from Billy the seagull who needed some breakfast. These are just a few of the little things that made this property great.
The only improvements that we would suggest would be to de-clutter a bit and clear some surfaces for guests to place their things. For us, with a small child, there were a few too many pieces of furniture. We appreciate a bit more open space for play. Lastly, upgrading the charcoal BBQ to a propane grill ($100 from Walmart is all it would take) would allow guests to utilize the outdoor space more efficiently for cooking and entertaining.
Overall we had a fantastic time and could have spent another week (or the rest of the summer) relaxing at this property.
My family and I spent a wonderful five days at this lovely cottage. The house is comfortable and very well equipped, and the owners are delightful. Hubbards is located only 1/2 hour from Halifax. The town of Hubbards is the home of the famous Trellis Café and only 20 minutes from Bayswater Beach. As well we took short trips to the various villages within close proximity, Peggy's Cove, Chester, Mahone Bay and Lunenburg and even found our way to Hirtles Beach which is by far my favourite. The view from the living room/dining room and back patio is magnificent, and it was very pleasant and relaxing to see the sailboats going by. A true Nova Scotia experience. Thank you.
Coincidentally, there were c.d.'s available for listening pleasure, including Tony Bennett. We reviewed the previous comments by other guests to Bowsprit House and describing the amenities would be repetitive as we highly agree with them all. There was nothing left to be desired other than to have had more time to spend there. The personal attention through communications with the owner, Laurie, a brief meeting to welcome us, the offer of "my neighbours are your neighbours", translates to "my family is your family" aka Donnie and Carol (sister and brother-in-law) was what made us feel so at home while away from our own. Believe what you hear about East Coast hospitality, it's true!
With the fondest of memories, Glen and Bonnie
What an amazing surprise!! We took a chance - we booked this property on line and didn't know what we signed up for. What we signed up for was a warm, charming, clean, comfortable, spacious home that provided all our needs, wants and the most amazing view that changed every day. On the sea deck with coffee or wine, we enjoyed a beautiful sunrise, dew, or a fog that lifted out to sea. The sunsets were breathtaking! During the day, we ventured out too many seaside villages that felt like a best kept secret. Hubbards people welcome you with their fine food and good cheer - a holiday to remember - thank you Laurie and family :) Cam and Tom, Simcoe Ontario - Aug. 5 - 11, 2012
Our stay at the Hubbards was fantastic. The home is clean, cozy and comfortable and stocked with all of the necessary amenities. We were there for a long weekend with our 2-year old son. He loved feeding the birdies and running along the yard. We had awesome weather while we were there, and spent most of our time on the porch area sipping drinks and admiring the beautiful view.
The owner has been wonderful and left us with detailed notes on how to operate everything in the home. An added bonus is the beautiful artwork that adorns the walls in the cottage.
We were very pleased with our stay and will definitely recommend this rental to our family and friends. We hope to stay there again one day soon ourselves!
Our family of 5 spent 4 days in this gorgeous property on the Nova Scotia coast. It is an amazing place with a magnificent view on the waterfront with everything a home away from home needs. The home is very well maintained and has all the amenities that anyone would need. Hubbards is a lovely town with a friendly atmosphere and the home provides a great base for daily excursions to nearby attractions such as Lunnenberg or Peggy's Cove. We felt very much at home with a great kitchen and lots of space for everyone. This home has charm and artistic flare but is spotless and very comfortable for a family. We were very sorry to leave this lovely spot behind, and would love to stay longer. Laurie, thank you for allowing us to enjoy our holiday - you are truly lucky to have such a lovely home and we are grateful for having the opportunity to stay here. Sitting on the deck in the moonlight with a cup of tea, listening to the waves of the ocean and watching the sailboats sway on the water was a treat not easily forgotten. Thanks a million. Viola and family from Toronto.
