Rejoice in Nature, relax your mind and rejuvenate your soul at this secluded private cottage on a park-like estate at the 2400 foot level of Mauna Kea in Hamakua. Thoughtful and artistic decoration add to the pastoral feel of this solar powered two story dwelling with carport and covered lanai. A galley kitchen with cook top and refrigeration will allow on site meal preparation. The wood burning stove provides warmth on cool evenings and the queen bed upstairs and foldout full size futon sofa downstairs encourage peaceful rest. Wireless high speed internet access allows you to connect with your mobile devices to entertainment and communication options. The Hamakua district offers easy access to the beaches of the Kohala coast, a glimpse into plantation era life in Honoka'a town and Laupahoehoe, hiking and exploration in Waipio valley, shopping and cinema in Hilo and enjoyment of the open vistas not available to many in the Hawaiian islands.
We, as your hosts, are willing to share our knowledge of photo-voltaic power (all structures on the property are off-grid) and provide you with tours of our working art studio (raku ceramics and jewelry are produced here and marketed in several galleries in the state) gardens and monumental lily pond. As decades-long residents of the Big Island, we are happy to share our love of this land and its people and provide guidance for touring.
We hail from the Midwest and Pacific Northwest, have called Hawaii home for 34 years and chose this area of the Big Island for its peaceful natural beauty. Residing on the same property, but out of sight of the vacation cottage allows us to provide privacy yet permits immediate response to any questions or problems that may arise from visitors. Having a long experience with hosting friends and family prompted us to offer our home to those who desire a more personal look at life in Hawaii than a hotel could provide.
Randal Sutton purchased this cottage in 1994
Paauilo mauka drew our interest and ignited our passion for its cool upcountry climate, vistas of Mauna Kea and rolling pastureland. A 'green' mentality and sensitivity to Nature is fostered by this off-the-grid area.
Since we are working artists and avid gardeners, we enjoy sharing our knowledge of the land and our enthusiasm for raku-fired ceramics. The art studio which is housed in a former horse barn on the property is a space to which we welcome visitors.
This cottage is as good as it gets. Our stay here was the best ever. We spent our perfect first anniversary.
Thanks Randall and Zeik for all the effort.
A beautiful cottage that is as private and romantic as they imply.
Unfortunately, this stay was for business. My coworker and I had a training in Honoka'a so the "romance" factor was a bit wasted on us. However, I would return here in a heartbeat with a partner, with another coworker or even by myself. The finishing touches and thoughtful additions placed here and there made this stay a true pleasure. Just a few miles from Honoka'a and pretty easy to find with their detailed directions. When looking at the amenities my top priority was availability of coffee so I missed that there's no oven or microwave, so put down the frozen pizza and opt for grilling steaks or burgers on a lanai with the most gorgeous views. Loved that the owner was discretely unobtrusive, minimal contact, but had his contact info if I needed anything...which I didn't because they have thought of everything!
I came from a round trip of the island staying in different cottages and condos. I wanted a nice and quiet retreat for my last stay to wrap up and reflect on my travel. From the advertizement this looked like a right place, and surely it was! I think you will have to look long to find anywhere more fit to that description. With it's idyllic retreat location, very tasteful and practical interior, and the friendly and helpful owner living close, but descretly next door, I found this to be a place that I will clearly recommend!
Mele Manu is an absolute must stay when visiting the Big Island. If your looking for tranquility and a lovely place to relax look no further! The cottage is wonderfully cozy and inviting. You won't want to leave even to explore the island. Randal is most hospitable and attentive to every need. Upon arrival a warm fire was glowing in the wood burner taking the edge off the chilly night air, a variety of flowers from the property and fresh oranges on the counter were just a few of the personal touches that made Mele Manu perfect. The cottage is very clean, well equipped (including firewood, bikes, beach chairs & much more) and has an eclectic, elegant hawaiian style that makes you feel right at home. Randal & Zeik's art is throughout and lovely to look at. We loved the little pottery lesson, thanks again for that! There was nothing that could have made our stay better - it was all there!! Nice central location for exploring from Waimea to HIlo and there's plenty to do in between! Check out the vanilla farm 10 minutes away, the bread pudding is to die for!!!
Thanks again Randal and Zeik for all the obvious hard work that goes into keeping the cottage meticulously well kept. We look forward to our next visit!
I have always considered Hawaii to be the closest thing to Paradise of any of the places I have visited, and Mele Manu Cottage is like a slice of Paradise all it's own. This is such a charming cottage on a secluded property just a short drive up into the hills off the breathtaking Hamakua coast. Randal was a gracious and helpful host who gave us lots of great tips on places to visit, even the best beach to go to. The cottage is immaculately kept and filled with locally made, original artwork by the owners and their friends. We started each morning with fresh squeezed orange juice from oranges supplied by Randal from a tree right on the property. We enjoyed experiencing life "off the grid" and found this to be the most relaxing vacation we have ever had. Even my workaholic husband was able to unwind and forget about work for a while. Some of the highlights of this property were: visiting Randal and Zeke in their ceramic studio, waking up to the songs of loads of birds, seeing a family of wild turkeys and just being away from civilization and other vacationers for a while. The gardens and flowers are awesome. As an artist, I was able to find quite a bit of time to just sit and sketch and take some wonderful photos. I definitely want to return in the future and bring more art supplies so I can paint some watercolors. This was such a welcome retreat from the brutal east coast weather we were having at home this winter. I highly recommend this property but you need to know that there is no television, but you will not miss it. Make sure to bring some books to help you relax and enjoy the quiet evenings. There is plenty to do in the area. One new place we visited this time on the Big Island was the nearby Hawaiian Vanilla Company. Make sure you go!
The Hamakua district is an historically agricultural and ranching area with plantation era towns, Buddhist temples, gift shops, cinema and vistas of the Pacific ocean and Mauna Kea, topped with observatories. Waipio Valley, with its spectacular overlook, black sand beach and taro ponds is a 13 mile drive away. Access to the valley is either on foot or via 4 WD vehicle (tour vans are available). Hiking beyond the valley along the coastline is challenging but visually rewarding. The Hawaiian Vanilla Company is 1 mile hike or drive away, can provide ecotours and has a gift shop. Waimea (Kamuela) is 20 miles away, nestled against the Kohala mountains and is the headquarters of Parker Ranch. The beaches of Kohala (Spencer beach, Hapuna beach and the resorts of Mauna Kea and Hapuna) are 32 miles by car. Laupahoehoe point, 20 miles by car, is a spectacular setting for a picnic at sea level and the former site of Laupahoehoe school where many lives were lost in the tsunami of 1946.
