Beautiful cabin, but unethical owner
This is a beautiful and secluded cabin located a short distance from the Seney Nature Preserve. The cabin is well equipped for hosting families: a spacious living room with potential for sleeping (the two couches and one easy chair fold out into beds), a private bedroom on the ground floor and two bed upstairs. The kitchen is spacious and well equipped. The cabin as a whole was spotless and exceptionally comfortable. And the views are amazing: from the deck (which itself has ample seating), you look down to a sloping lawn, a picnic table, and the banks of the Manistique River.
Unfortunately, while the cabin is comfortable, spacious, well furnished and well equipped, I cannot recommend it to prospective renters. This has everything to do with the low level of customer service provided by the owner, which my family experienced during our stay. One of the features noted in the online description of Seney Lodge was a seven-person hot tub located on the deck. However, on our arrival we found that the hot tub was out of commission, a fact that the owner had failed to disclose in advance. When we contacted him, he refused to provide a reduced rate for our stay, remarking that we had never told him that a hot tub was a "mandatory feature" - despite the fact that it is promised in his own advertising. (By the way, the cabin's website now states that the hot tub is only available from June to September, but that is a new addition to the description - when we made the booking, the online listing provided no dates for the hot tub's availability, suggesting that it was available year-round. (I would not have rented the cabin had the website said nothing.)
My understanding of a rental agreement is that it is an arrangement made in trust and good faith based on the description that the owner provides. There were many things stated in the online description of Seney Lodge that we needed for our comfort and did not discuss in advance: the number of beds on the premises, for instance, or the sleeper couches in the living room. We did not discuss them in advance because we trusted the owner to adhere to the truth of his description on the website. Since the owner does not seem to feel an obligation to be true to his own advertising, I would not under any circumstances recommend this property to prospective travelers.
