If repeat guests are the true measure of a successful vacation rental property, Lanikai Cottage has hit the mark! Staying in a private, detached dwelling enhances the Lanikai experience, especially when compared to attached studios and rooms within a private home. In fact it is one of the few licensed vacation rentals in Lanikai, of which there are only 15, and is the only one which is a completely separate structure from the owner's residence. Located in the world famous beach community of Lanikai, in the town of Kailua, on the island of Oahu, Hawaii, there are two highly rated beaches within minutes. Lanikai Beach is a five minute walk from the cottage. Kailua Beach Park is a three minute drive away. Over the years, Kailua and Lanikai beaches have been given numerous accolades. Lanikai's include best sunrise in Hawaii and most scenic beach in America. The Mokulua Islands off shore from Lanikai have been included in numerous advertisements and movies. You can kayak out to them and explore the island on the left. You can also hike up the ridgeline behind Lanikai for scenic vistas in all directions. Kailua Beach has been chosen as the best sports beach in America numerous times. In fact, the town of Kailua was chosen as one of the top five spots in America for a permanent vacation! Between these natural attractions and the comfort of the Cottage, the majority of our guests return or refer others.
The cottage is a Hawaiian-style beach house with a lanai (deck) on the back for outdoor meals and barbecuing. The glass doors that separate the living room from the lanai slide back into a pocket creating an 8' wide opening. The one bedroom, one bathroom interior also has a living area with a bar-top dining area with stools. The hardwood floor is covered with an area carpet. The wall mounted 18,000 BTU Air Conditioner cools the entire cottage for night time sleep comfort. The bathroom has a glass shower enclosure, toilet, sink, small closet, and shelves. There is a reserved parking spot in the yard. The cottage has its own washer and dryer for your exclusive use.
We have lived in Kailua for over 24 years and in Lanikai for the past 18 years. We have hosted guests from all over the world in Lanikai Cottage, and especially enjoy our repeat guests.

Lanikai is an amazing community! It's a peaceful, low-key neighborhood with so much to offer. Of course there are all the ocean sports and the beauty of the Mokulua Islands off-shore. There is hiking up the Lanikai ridge to see the WWII pillboxes plus the awesome 360 degree view of the Windward side of Oahu. There is always just walking or biking around the Lanikai loop.
Lanikai Cottage is on the quiet southern end of Lanikai loop. It is a short walk to gorgeous Lanikai Beach. You can also enjoy hiking the Lanikai ridge to the WWII pillboxes, walking around Lanikai loop, or just relaxing in the hammock for a mid-day snooze or some evening star-gazing!
Aloha, we realized that because we had just subscribed to this guestbook service that it would look rather barren unless we added hand written comments from the book which resides in the cottage. So, here are a few...
"What a cute place, so relaxing...just what we needed. We felt so at home. Allison and Mike, you two, and this cottage, are pure class! :-)"
"We totally enjoyed your comfortable cottage - it's fresh from the pages of Country Living. Thanks for being there when we needed you."
"We had a perfect Spring Break from all of the pressures of work and family. The cottage provided a special retreat for us...so much nicer than staying at a large, impersonal hotel."
Quaint, cozy, private feel, opposite of hotel experience. Our hosts were very friendly and accommodating, yet were very respectful of our privacy. Lanikai Cottage is at the front of the property and gave a sense of separateness from the family home. Having said that, it got noisy at 6:00 a.m. when neighbors were going to work. Parking was convenient, steps away from the cottage. Appreciated the laundry facilities, again, separate from the family home. We enjoyed being able to walk to the beach as parking in the residential streets just off the beach was extremely busy. Loved the décor, hardwood floors, variety of beach items such as boogie boards, grass mats, pails & shovels to name a few. Lots of towels, linens and the kitchenette, although quite worn, provided not only all the dishes, utensils and pots we needed but also supplied plastic wrap, foil paper, seasonings, condiments. We sat on the lanai every night, enjoyed barbequing too. All in all a relaxing, private, worry free, wonderful experience!
We loved our 5 night stay here. The kayaks saved us hundreds of dollars in rentals. The hosts offered a lot of great first hand knowledge of the area. The washer and dryer was essential. The air conditioning was great to have when needed. The futon was broken from previous guests, but the owner fixed it at 9pm as the kids were going to bed. The air mattress did not hold air and required our 50 pound kid to press the noisy refill button numerous times nightly. Beware if you have Verizon, your phone won't work in this area. The wifi provided works but is not strong enough for a typical family's multiple devices going at once to research attractions in the area or do some work in the evenings to keep our businesses back home running. The landscaping was amazing, good enough to do a photoshoot of the family in Hawaii. The grill was fantastic, as was the fully stocked kitchen.
We wanted to stay out of Honolulu for a weekend as part of a longer trip to Hawaii. This was perfect. The deck is more secluded than we had realized, with palms providing a screen from the main house. it was a perfect spot for a cup of coffee each morning.
As others have noted, it's an easy walk to the beach. It's also a quick drive into Kailua for restaurants, stores, etc. Lanikai Beach was quite nice. Despite the complaints of locals about it being crowded, it's much better than many of the beaches back home.
The owner was also quite prompt in answering our questions and making all arrangements.
I certainly hope to stay there again on a future trip.
The listing was very accurate and the location was actually closer to the beach than I had imagined. The property was clean, well maintained, and rather private. The owner was very helpful and kind. I would recommend the property to those traveling as a couple or with one child. It is a very comfortable place, relaxed and felt like home. Lanikai is rather a sleepy little town, close enough to Kailua for more choices in restaurants etc. The Island is small enough that if you have rented a car, you can take day trips and come home to a beautiful quiet space.
The cottage was in a perfect location with a short walk to the beach. It's adequate for two people staying there. It definitely needs some updating; for instance, the shower and the inside and outside furniture.
We spent one week in this super cute, comfy little cottage. It was the perfect size for two adults who needed a good rest. We stepped outside the cottage each morning and walked a few hundred yards to a mostly-secluded beach. And one day, we walked 50 yards to a bus stop that took us to Ala Moana Shopping Center.
Pros: on bus line, close to semi-private beach, kitchenette (no stove/oven), great little town, wonderful food (loved Buzz's), towels, beach equipment, b-b-q, quiet and friendly neighborhood
Cons: no coverings on bathroom window (we hung a towel to keep it private), last-minute unannounced work on the cottage for solar panels
