About Colleen Simpson

We are presently living our dream full time in the amazing village of Piegaro! We love to greet our guests, give advice, teach pasta lessons and generally live the good life in a wonderful village where our friends and neighbors are so welcoming of us and also of our guests. Originally from Seattle we always dreamed of living in Italy someday. It is important not only to dream but to chase that dream with great passion! We love to share this passion with our guests from over 24 different countries.

Colleen Simpson purchased this apartment in 2004
Why Colleen Simpson chose Piegaro

It called to us! This vast abandoned glass factory which was the single most historic property in a pristine little perched hilltop village in Umbria on the border of Tuscany. We spent our honeymoon in Umbria in 1994 and fell in love with this region. After searching for 10 years we found our little piece of paradise! We lovingly restored it to become a beautiful and authentic destination for guests.

What makes this apartment unique

Every evening the sun sets over the vast panoramic views from the windows and terraces of L'Antica Vetreria. The idyllic countryside is always tranquil and inviting. From the pool one can enjoy privacy and the expanding view over farmlands and hillsides filled with olive groves, vines and sunflower fields. But just steps away is the lively piazza with its shops and gourmet restaurants with outdoor terraces. Each evening one can sit in the piazza and watch the village children play, the elders take their evening walk and feel totally welcomed with warmth. We love to live the authentic life of Italy which cannot be done isolated in the countryside. This way we have the views and tranquility of the country, but the daily rhythms of village life. Everything you need is within these historic stone walls!

Can't Imagine a Finer Place to Stay!

Can't Imagine a Finer Place to Stay!
  • Submitted: Mar 10, 2011
  • Stayed: May 2010
I can't imagine a finer place to stay than in the lovely Cantina Apartment at 'l Antica Vetreria in Piegaro. I would open the shutters in the morning to the sunlight flooding over the beautiful hills and valleys of Umbria, and end my day with beautiful sunsets. The life in the village is both peaceful and friendly, truly a relaxing vacation at it's best. One of the wonderful amenities of 'l Antica Veteria was the fully stocked kitchen, where you can bring home treasures from the market and butcher down the street as you feel at home in Piegaro. I really appreciated the two floor format with bedrooms upstairs so if one wanted to sleep, the living room noise was distanced. They have great movies for those nights when you are so tired from traveling you just want to relax with a glass of local vino on the comfy couch. Because of the warmth and intimacy of the town you just have to ask the hostess, Colleen, and she will arrange for local chefs (mamas & papas) to come in, and she even teaches a homemade pasta lesson herself, with supplies available in the local shops to take home so you can bring back your new found skills to share with friends back home. It is so great also that the Inn is in the heart of the village, where a walk to Caffe Via Roma in the morning took 1 minute, and the song of the church bells called to a beautiful worship Sundays at noon at 6 p.m. a very civilized time to worship! I can't say enough about Piegaro as an ideal place to vacation, and for l' Antica Vetreria as the ultimate place in which to stay! What more can you ask for, warmth, hospitality, great rooms, swimming pool, majestic vistas and wonderful people to welcome you. Bella!!

Rare That Actual Experience Exceeds Expectations!

  • Submitted: Mar 10, 2011
  • Stayed: May 2010
We hesitated to write a review because we enjoyed it so much. We arrived at La Cantina w/our two kids (7 and 10) after several days exploring the sites of Rome. Colleen picked us up at the train station, arranged for a rental car, helped us grocery shop and then drove us up the hill to beautiful Piegaro. As soon as we arrived we were breath taken by the beautiful views of the Umbrian hills surrounding us. Every room in La Cantina has a window with a picture perfect view of Umbria. Our first evening was spent drinking wine and eating local delicacies while watching the sunset on our patio o/s the apt. Our kids spent the evening searching for lizards and swimming in the pool. Piegaro is a sleepy, intimate village located centrally to all we wanted to see. Our kids played soccer in the town piazza in the morning while listening to the church bells ring. Everyone in town is warm and helpful. It is a lovely place to come home to at the end of the day. The apt. has all the comforts of home, with the style and beauty of Italy. We can't say enough about Colleen and Tom. We felt like we were visiting family. They are a wealth of information, energy and warmth. The kitchen at La Cantina is well stocked with everything you need. There is a central washer/dryer and a great video library for our kids. Really the place is so special that it was hard to leave at the end of the week. With-in 1-2 hours you can reach all the major attractions (and more) of both Umbria and parts of Tuscany. It's rare that the actual experience exceeds expectations, but in this case it really did. Colleen and Tom did an amazing job renovating the old glass factory. We saw all the units and hope to come back with family and friends in the near future and stay in the incredible 5bd Villa! Thank you so much Colleen and Tom!

Friendliness, Ambience, Location and History!

  • Submitted: Mar 10, 2011
  • Stayed: Aug 2010
Piegaro is a nice quiet village with a friendly butcher, baker, grocery store, three bars, a restaurant and a gelateria. All you need. There is also a very interesting glass museum. The town is within easy day trips of all of Tuscany including Sienna. By easy I mean less than 90 minutes. Perugia and Assisi are about 45 minutes by car, and there are plenty of other interesting towns and villages close by. The view from Antica Vetraria's poolside terrace is nice and the terrace is a great place for an evening meal of local wine, cheeses, ham and salami. While we did not cook any meals during our stay, the kitchen is fully stocked with pots, pans etc. The staff speaks English. Highly recommended for friendliness, ambience, location and history!

Little Paradise!

  • Submitted: Mar 10, 2011

"So we've been back home again for over a week now. Many things were better in Umbria -- the weather, the pasta, the wine, the landscape and the time our family could spend together. Before we came to L'Antica Vetreria we asked ourselves and wondered how holidays in an old glass factory would be. And we found a little paradise with ancient walls, a real glass oven in the apartment, a nice village with friendly people and everything one needs for nice holidays. The children liked the pool very much and enjoyed our walks to the bakery every morning and we loved the evenings with a glass of wine and looking over the hills. Thank you very much again for everything. We think we will return some day."

Our Girls Loved It!

  • Submitted: Mar 10, 2011
  • Stayed: Jul 2009
The girls often talk about Piegaro and how they loved it. It was a big favorite. They loved the pool, the relaxed atmosphere and the freedom of Antica Veteria and the town itself. The pasta lessons and the glass fossiling topped it off. Ellen was very excited about the old glass straw she found. (300 years old?) It will be highlight of show and tell when she gets back to school. Andrew and I also loved the beautiful apartment, La Cantina, and the friendliness of other guests there, and the town. We've already recommended it to our friends. Hoping to return one day!"
