An enthusiastic New York and Harlem resident, always ready to give the inside scoop and recommendations on Harlem or NYC. Very involved in the neighborhood. A product, landscape and interior designer with numerous awards and items in national museums. In fact, the building has also been published in several magazines and appeared in films. A world traveller, as I flew for Pan Am for over 7 years.
Dennis Decker purchased this apartment in 2000
This building is typical of the historic neighborhood. I was impressed that it still retained so much of its original form and material. However, I was very impressed by the atmosphere of the block, with friendly, open and involved neighbors.
The quiet friendly tree-lined street, proximity to express subway- only 4 stops to Times Square, closeness to neighborhood coffee shop and historic park, as well as the 125 St. corridor and Central Park.
I actually love sitting on the front stoop while having a coffee or a glass of wine. I love seeing the relaxed street life going by, and being a part of it. Since my block is dominated by private brownstones, rather than apartment buildings, it has a friendlier, small town feeling than most other neighborhoods.
We enjoyed NY, for an important part due to your charming, comfortable and quiet apartment (and its friendly and helpful landlord).
We certainly will advice friends who plan to go to The Big Apple to see whether you have plavce for them.
And may be one day we will be back in your city.
Don't even know where to begin, everything I mean everything was perfect. The studio immaculate, Dennis awesome! Location perfect, area great!
Studio had everything I needed and more, my 11 day stay was perfect, I felt safe, the studio felt like you were at home.
I can't wait to return! Thank you Dennis for all the info, your literature was so helpful, great tips!
Amazing place, Clean , Quite and most important close to subway witch gets you to center in 20 min, just outside of Macys store . I would strongly recomend this property , and deffinitely on my next trip to NYC i will go back to this place if available . 10 of 10
The studio was exactly as advertised. Everything was clean and ready to go. Super comfy bed, quiet, and warm studio. We were welcomed by Dennis immediately upon our arrival and were shown the apartment, where everything was located, how it all worked, and given a booklet with several local clubs and restaurants to check out. The music Dennis provided lasted the entire week, and was a welcome addition to enjoy when we were back at the studio. Location was great for checking out the sights of harlem and we found staff at the local establishments, especially Barawine right around the corner, very welcoming. The subway is only a couple blocks away with easy access to the main sight seeing areas in Manhattan.
Dennis was wonderful, provided us wth great information and local knowledge. After touring around Manhattan and its busyiness it was great to return to Harlem Hideaway each night. The apartment was nice and cosy compared to the Winter outside. Do yourself a favour and have good soul food at Amy Ruth's. Close to the subway and Central Park. The people of Harlem were very friendly and willing to help out lost tourists.Overall a very pleasant stay of two weeks, if I come back to NYC, I would
definitely return to Harlem Hideaway. Home Away provided a great level of service.
This was the first time I had ever used a site like VRBO. I was very skeptical, you know what they say, what you see isn't always what you get when it comes to the internet...
In this case, what you see is exactly what you get! Our little bungalow was fabulous, exactly as described. Dennis helped to put all my worries to rest. The location of our apartment was perfect. Harlem, contrary to popular opinion, is safe.. at least in this location. We were close to the subway and some great restaurants, including the Red Rooster and Harlem Shakes (which features some great shakes and tasty jerk fries!) . I loved that I got to experience NYC this way, we felt as if we were truly living in the city. I plan to stay here again and would recommend it to all my friends!! I give it 5++ stars!
