It is an ideal spot year round for a getaway from routine, from stress, from traffic!

Beautifully landscaped with a WALLED GARDEN, a pond with FOUNTAIN, a large GAZEBO for al fresco dining, and separate BREAKFAST BALCONY, Vista assures your comfort and relaxation indoors and out. Perfect backdrop and environment for WEDDING PHOTOS!

Your accompanying friends will be thrilled with the 2nd bedroom, with its ANTIQUE, 4-POSTER DOUBLE BED, and the 200-year-old CHILD'S DESK they can use for writing postcards home. The extra large 3rd bedroom also has ANTIQUE 4-POSTER DOUBLE BED, and includes two pullout sofas to sleep a total of up to 5 guests.

Crib available.

Each bedroom enjoys VIEWS OF NATURE AND COUNTRY SPLENDOR from all the bedroom windows. Each bedroom has ultra-fine linens, and its own large bathroom.

With Vista as your vacation base, you can EASILY DRIVE TO DOZENS OF HISTORIC SITES and some of the world's finest visitor's centers to experience history where it happened, and honor those who fought and died to make America the great nation it is today.

A mere 15-minute drive will take you to Gettysburg--to where Chamberlain stood moments before he led a bayonet charge down the slopes of Little Round Top; to Cemetery Ridge, where the rebel yell still echoes from Pickett's Confederates as they charged to the 'high water mark' of the war; to the Gettysburg Cemetery, where Lincoln delivered the most famous speech in history honoring those who gave 'the last full measure.'

Vista offers easy access to many of America's other most important historical sites, as well, including Antietam and Monocacy Battlefields, as well as cultural and recreational sites in and around Washington DC and Baltimore.

After a day of sightseeing, golf, or ANTIQUES SHOPPING in the MANY OF THE EXCELLENT ANTIQUE SHOPS in Carroll County, you can kick back at Vista. Sip a cool iced tea or glass of wine from under Vista's gazebo as steaks sizzle on the grill, and a red setting sun yields the dimming cornfields and sycamore trees to a constellation of sparkling fireflies.

Or, enjoy the Maryland traditional celebratory feast: a pot of blue crabs from Vince's Seafood, steaming in savory Old Bay seasoning, with cold bottle of delicious locally crafted beer, or a chilled glass of fresh apple cider from nearby Baugher's Orchard.

Prefer to dine out? Vista is only 3 miles from Taneytown, where you can find WORLD-CLASS DINING at the Smokehouse Restaurant, the fabulous restaurant of the delux country hotel, ANTRIM 1844 an elegant ante-bellum mansion. At the other end of the cost spectrum, McDonald's, Pizza Hut and other familiar eateries are CLOSE and offer faster food alternatives.

The larger, but still nearby towns of Gettysburg and Westminster boast wonderful small-town character in pubs, diners, and family restaurants to please any palate and any budget.

For a quiet evening at your Country Home, enjoy a movie or documentary from a large collection of Civil War DVDs and other movie options on a large HD TV, which also includes cable TV viewing options.

For a quieter evening, curl up with one of the many books in the Vista library of Civil War and American fiction and history books and periodicals.

Vista also offers you WiFi for HIGH-SPEED INTERNET access. Use it to look up your Civil War ancestors, check your email, or tell your Facebook friends what a great time you are having! (Please, no movie streaming)

About Bruce Batten

Vista Country Home is located on Fiddler's Green, a working farm that has been in our family for 5 generations. Owner/managers are siblings Bruce, Chris and Mary Batten, who grew up playing in these creeks and fields, riding horses, milking cows, bailing hay, etc. Bruce's wife, Toni, and Chris' wife, Melissa are essential parts of our family team.

Here, where Big Pipe Creek joins Bear Branch on our property, we would wander the banks where Civil War soldiers camped the day before the battle that shaped the history of our nation. It was here we gained our appreciation of history, and the sacrifices made by our ancestors for the blessings that we enjoy today.

Chris and wife Melissa are the on-site managers who lives in the ante-bellum farmhouse nearby. Bruce and Mary divide their time between Vista and Fiddlers Green, and their other residences in Alaska.

Bruce Batten purchased this chateau / country house in 1946

Why Bruce Batten chose Frederick

Our family built Vista Country Home, designed by Registered Lansdscape architect Chris Batten, on our family farm known as Fiddler's Green in 1990. It was originally built for and home to US Navy Capt. (ret.) Hugh N. Batten, a WWII fighter ace, and his wife 'Tommy' Batten. Both are now deceased.

This location has been a family farm for some 200 years, and looks much the same as it did 150 years ago during the Civil War, when Confederate forces invaded Maryland numerous times. Scores of battles large and small raged within short distances from this farm. Tens of thousands of soldiers marched through these fields, or camped along Pipe Creek, which runs through this property, on their way to destiny at Gettysburg. Its proximity to Gettysburg, Antietam, and other battle grounds makes it an ideal home base for day trips to some of the world's finest battlefield visitors centers, as well as all the visitor attractions of both Baltimore and Washington D.C.

But in addition to its location in a America's historic heartland, Vista is situated among some of America's most charming countryside, small towns, and neighbor farms. We wanted to share this magical place with people who love history and this country's agarian roots.

Vista House

  • 5 of 5

Vista house was absolutely wonderful. We are a family of five - all adults and one dog. The house provides plenty of privacy but also has a kitchen, dining room and living room that facilitates easy communication. Although there are plenty of activities in the area the house is the best for hang out time! My daughter and I thoroughly enjoyed the piano. The perfectly situated windows provide hours of entertainment. From cosy comfortable furniture, we were able to watch the sunrise, sunset, fields and trees. In addition, there is a bird house outsider the dining room window that gathers a multitude of birds. Also everyday we enjoyed long walks throughout the property. It was great,

A Dog-Gone GREAT time at Vista House!!!

  • 5 of 5

Vista house was wonderful! Our group consisted of Labrador Retriever owners / competitors from around the US and Canada who met in MD. & PA. for the 2014 Labrador National Specialty competition. We were delighted to be able to find a home willing to let us bring our dogs! The house provided ample private space to run the dogs and the lay out was comfortable and great for a group gathering. The hiking trail and stream was an added bonus for our 4 legged companions! Close by we had access to restaurants etc... The single thing that we did notice was a slow drain in the lower level bedroom shower... so we had to budget our time to share the upstairs shower.. Other than that very small inconvenience the house was clean, organized, and the grounds were just beautiful!

Owner's Response: We are so pleased you and your companions had a great visit, and that you took advantage of all the open space and natural beauty Vista has to offer for our Guests! We are very sorry about the slow drain you discovered and any inconvenience it may have caused. Our promise to all our guests is to provide a worry-free, hassle-free experience in a beautiful country environment with elegant city comforts. No one else has encountered this drain issue, and this review is the first we have heard that you had this problem. Thanks for alerting us to it! It is now taken care of and working normally. If you had let us know about the slow drain when you discovered it, we would have gladly resolved it immediately--an advantage we have of being nearby enough to respond quickly, but not too close for privacy! We look forward to your return whenever you are in our beautiful part of the country! Thanks again for being our guests, and your kind comments! --The Battens of Vista Country Home: Bruce, Chris, Melissa, and Mary

Serenity and Splendor

  • 5 of 5

Truly enjoyed our stay here. The driveway takes you back off of the main road a distance, which was a little confusing when we arrived the first night, but oh the beauty that awaits you at the end of the drive. We enjoyed the leaves showing their brillant colors, and the corn fields surrounding the perimeter of the yard, lending to a very peaceful feeling.

Chris was a great host, always available to answer any questions, and gave us good advice regarding area attractions, he also offered a farm tour which was very enjoyable. We did not find time to take advantage of the hiking trails around the time :)

Location is very nice, we did day trips every day. Baltimore, Washington DC, Lancaster, Gettysburg and Frederick. The area is beautiful and we will definitely go back.

Loved it!!!

  • 5 of 5

Vista Country Home was the ideal location for our family vacation. It was private, yet not totally isolated since shopping was less than 10 minutes away and the owners, Chris and Melissa, live not too far around the bend. Chris met us with the key and proudly provided us with the history of the farm, and that of the home that he initially designed for his parents. All family members were friendly and easily reached via email. The home itself was beautifully designed and spacious enough for all seven of us. We spent mornings birdwatching on the beautiful back deck, which overlooked flowers and cornfields. We spent evenings under the gazebo, where we grilled our dinner and enjoyed the sound of the fountain in the nearby fish pond. During the day, we travelled to Gettysburg, which was about 20 minutes away. We would love to stay here again and we are still talking about our family vacation in Vista Country Home.

Could not have been any better! Loved it :)

  • 5 of 5

Everything about Vista was wonderful, Chris, Melissa, Ben and Bruce were exceptional hosts - thank you for making our trip even better. The house and grounds offered a beautiful quiet retreat with ample room to explore, relax or in our case play a little World Cup! We spent long days in Gettysburg which was about a 20 minute ride and came back to a serene setting to relax. We had 10 in our party and there was plenty of room for all. Got a chance to peek at the Little Round House as well and would live to return to it or Vista sometime soon!

Our Fantastic Visit!

  • 5 of 5

Melissa and Chris were wonderful, welcoming hosts who made our stay so much more enjoyable! We had a fantastic time in such a serene location-it was hard to believe how close we were to all the local attractions! Our family loved the farm, the hiking trails and the creek. I especially enjoyed dining al fresco on the flower filled patio with the beautiful water feature. We took day trips to Gettysburg, and Washington DC, but our favorite days were just staying at Vista and enjoying the property. We wish we could have stayed longer and we hope to return to the Vista paradise soon!
