To the southwest of the island of Syros, is the village called Possidonia, named in honor of Poseidon, God of the Sea. There you will find the beautiful large sandy beach of Agathopes. You will be just a short walk to this fabulous 'Paralia' and its bar/cafeteria, restaurants & fishing. This popular beach with a cosmopolitan feel is protected by the Ministry of Environment (Blue Flag, 2012). It is a perfect spot for sunbathing and swimming. Sun umbrellas and sun beds are available for rent. There are some diving clubs available who offer underwater excursions as well as a local sailing school for children. The beach lies in a protected bay, has calm waters and is usually not affected by the northern summer winds, making it quite suitable for children. Natural beach lilies growing in the sand, with blooming white flowers, add to the serenity of the bay.
After your day at the beach, take an evening stroll through the nearby area also known as Delagratzia, named after the Catholic Church, Santa Maria Della Grazia. In the 19th century Possidonia was the favorite place of nobility which is why it is full of beautiful neoclassical mansions surrounded by French-style gardens and pine trees.
For more sightseeing travel 14km to the port city of Hermoupolis. The town of Hermoupolis is the capital of the Cyclades. It boasts one of the most architecturally fascinating ports in the Mediterranean and is comprised of some of the most beautiful old buildings in Greece and one of the most cosmopolitan towns in the Greek islands. There is much to see, with its very own Apollon Opera House, (modeled after La Skala in Milan) as well as the beautiful Platia Maoulis and the charming neoclassical 'Vaporia' section of town.
Hermoupolis is also filled with shops, restaurants, cafes and a casino. Don't forget to visit the 'Agora' for your souvenirs!
Unlike many other Greek Islands, Hermoupolis offers a year-round functioning city. With Syros on the same ferry line as Mykonos and Tinos, travel here is also flexible and convenient.
