October 21, 2011 – New York Times, Emily Brady:

“Sonoma County may be best known for its wineries and the tony (sic) towns of Healdsburg and Sonoma, but West County, as locals call the area around Sebastopol, is where the vineyards begin to give way to rolling hills, bohemian enclaves and the wild Pacific Coast beyond. Sure, there’s wine produced here — excellent pinots in particular — but there’s plenty to explore beyond it, especially around Sebastopol, where in recent years new restaurants, shops and live music venues have opened, securing the town’s position as West County’s arts and culture hub.”

American as Apple Pie

“‘I’ve been to Napa and Sonoma,’ you hear people say, as if they were one and the same. Sure, Sonoma’s 300-plus wineries, like those of vine-centric Napa, offer peak wine tasting, from Ravenswood’s deep Zinfandels to Gloria Ferrer’s sophisticated sparklers. But if you’ve visited only the county’s wineries, come back to sample the astounding diversity that makes Sonoma one of America’s travel treasures.

Spend some time floating in an inner tube down the Russian River and walking amid ancient giants—one over 1,400 years old—at Armstrong Redwoods State Natural Reserve. Poke around the old Russian stockade at Fort Ross, which turns 200 in 2012, or the Spanish adobe mission, San Francisco Solano, in Sonoma town. Hunt for antiques along Petaluma’s downtown Victorian row, and dine on seasonal sake-steamed, aged abalone at Michelin-starred Cyrus in Healdsburg. And don’t miss a flaky, fruit-packed slice of Gravenstein pie from Mom’s Apple Pie, a roadside stop outside Sebastopol. It ranks up there with a Russian River Valley Pinot Noir as a real taste of Sonoma.”

CAN'T WAIT TO GO BACK!

Can't wait to go back!

My friends and I stayed at WindBerry Lodge for our Book Club's 25th Anniversary. We could not have picked a better place for our special occasion. It was wonderful in every way. The attention to detail was fantastic - from the robes to the amazing appliances - everything you needed and more! Plenty of room for the six of us. We loved making pizza one night, using the BBQ the next. And watching the stars from the hot-tub. We played ping-pong, enjoyed sitting outside, and loved using both kitchens. Heidi was a perfect host, before, during and after our stay, gracious and helpful.
We wanted to stay longer! And can't wait to come back again.
Thank you!

PICTURE PERFECT WINE COUNTRY PROPERTY

  • 5 of 5
The house and grounds are a terrific center for a visit to the Sonoma Wine Country and in the center of everything. House is perfect for three couples and the two lofts work for kids, but two bathrooms is a limitation. The absolute highlight of the property is the open air full kitchen including a true wood fired pizza oven. And the chef we brought in was both terrific and reasonably price, allowing us to dine and drink at home without putting up with crowds, and being able to drink great wine at home.

PERFECT WINE COUNTRY GETAWAY

  • 5 of 5
This really is the ideal property if you are looking for a unique way to experience the Sonomoa Coast and Russian River Valley. The house is centrally located among a number of great wineries, and is within walking distance of both Merry Edwards and Dutton Goldfield. Two of my favorite producers in the area.

Within the house itself, you'll find high-end appliances and finishes throughout, and everything is very clean and well-maintained. The downside to the pristine interior of house is that you won't be spending any time there, simply because the outdoor kitchen is absolutely ridiculous! A huge grill, professional quality range, pizza oven, TV, and plenty of seating for everyone made it the highlight of the house for us.

Above all else, the owner of the house was very welcoming, offered helpful hints (you'll need them for the pizza oven!), and made us feel at home the moment we arrived. I'd re-book there in a heartbeat.

SUPER WINE COUNTRY RENTAL

  • 5 of 5
We thoroughly enjoyed our stay at WineBerry Lodge. We reserved the space for family coming in from San Diego, NYC, NJ, and Orange County for an SSU graduation. The outdoor gourmet kitchen with the pizza oven was ideal for our after grad gathering and for the Mother's day breakfast. The accommodations are luxurious: thick robes, plush beds, coffee, wood for the fireplace and pizza oven, a bottle of wine, hot tub, flat screens in every room, etc. Heidi is so nice and offered us fresh salmon they caught the day before, fresh lettuce from her garden, tips and links on places to go, etc. The rental actually can sleep 12 comfortably if 2 would sleep together in each bed. For that many guests, 2 bathrooms, one a master and a free standing bathroom, might not be enough. I'm one of 8 children, so for my family it was a non-issue. We shared our master bath with everyone. The outside shower was a welcome option for guys in bathing trunks, especially those coming from the colder east coast. The guys loved the driving range on the property too. We spent most of our time outdoors so we really didn’t use the TV’s. Even if you have bad weather the set-up outside allows you to still spend time out there. They even offer outdoor heaters, which we didn't need during our stay. If you plan on having as large a group as ours you have to have those who are able to take a ladder to a loft area for a cozy quiet sleeping attic bedroom off the library. The graduating college students (2) and godmother, who goes up and down a ladder on her boat, were perfect to sleep in that area. Otherwise 6 people can be very comfortable in the three downstairs bedrooms and two or more in the very large game room accessible by a spiral staircase. We loved the clean, spacious accommodations and would definitely rent WineBerry again.

A TASTE OF HEAVEN

  • 5 of 5
I chose WineBerry Lodge for a women's weekend away. Everyone raved about the house, the outdoors. None of us wanted to leave. In fact, as soon as I got home I talked to my family about going there for our next vacation. It was that wonderful. The pictures are great, but the real thing is out of this world.

RESPITE IN THE VINEYARDS

  • 5 of 5
Have you ever wanted your own private retreat among the vineyards? WineBerry Lodge is it!

I was looking for a house where my family and traveling companions would be comfortable. We are "foodies" and we love to cook, so when I'm looking for a vacation rental, I pay special attention the cooking facilities. WineBerry Lodge actually has two fully equipped gourmet kitchens: one outside with a pizza oven and the other indoor. High end appliances and plenty to entertain. The kitchen is well stocked with every type of small appliance, as well, cookware, service ware, etc.

The accommodations are top notch and comfortable. Heidi and Brent were attentive hosts, yet very considerate of our space (as they live on the property). WineBerry Lodge is adjacent to Merry Edwards WInery and you can look out the front door down through the vineyards at Merry Edwards. In addition, you are a stone's throw from Paul Hobbs and easy walk to Dutton Goldfield. While we enjoy visiting both Sonoma and Napa, we found this to be an ideal location. 15 minute drive to Santa Rosa and very easily accessible to all the Russian River and all the Sonoma wineries and other points of interest.

Check out Andy's Market. It is about a mile south of the property and a very popular spot with the locals. LOTS of fresh fruit and vegetables, and just about anything else you might need. We shopped mostly at Andy's but made two runs to Trader Joe's in Santa Rosa.

First night upon our arrival, we were starving and not feeling much like cooking, so we took Heidi's advise and hopped over to Underwood Cafe. Very cool place. This is the type of small cafe and restaurants you find off the beaten path in Sonoma County. We loved it! I thought the Lamb Papperdelle was off the hook. Nice selection of wines (by the glass or bottle), beer (some locally crafted), and an unusually well stocked bar. It does get busy on a Saturday and Sunday, but we lucked out with an early arrival just before the dinner service.

We had a lot of fun "learning" to cook with the pizza oven. If you've never done it before, it does take a bit of practice.

I can only endorse what others have said about the property and how much at home you are at WineBerry Lodge. Everything in the property description is spot on. I will be certain to return to WineBerry Lodge on my next visit to California Wine country. Couldn't have asked for anything better!

Many thanks to Heidi and Brent for their hospitality!
