Papa’Aloa is the ultimate in dream vacation spots! Located on the beautiful and historical Hamakua coast only 25 miles north of Hilo, Papa’Aloa is perched on this historic 1 acre with an oceanfront location that is second to none. What we consider to be the last of the old Hawaii, this is absolutely the perfect location for exploring both the east and the west sides of our island!
The home was dramatically designed - Bali style architecture with its soaring bamboo ceilings and built with that perfect indoor/outdoor lifestyle in mind that Hawaii is known for. There are 3 private large master suites all with king size beds, lovingly decorated each with their own private bathroom and mini bar. Each suite has it's own private outdoor entrance, two of which open up to the grand lanai/courtyard that faces the ocean and the pool. The third master suite is below with its own private patio. There is even a private outdoor shower! Why not?! You’re in Hawaii!!!
Push open those gorgeous glass bi fold doors and open up your living area to those incredible ocean trade winds and again to the grand lanai/courtyard that faces the beautiful blue Pacific ocean! The kitchen in the main living area with it’s gorgeous granite counter tops and stainless steel appliances welcomes you to all of the island cooking that you would like to do. Don’t want to cook indoors, then grill up some of that great island catch on our charcoal BBQ grill. Enjoy covered outdoor dining on the grand ocean view lanai listening to the water cascading in the mermaid fountain. Don’t forget, there’s a pool to exercise or just relax in, again, ocean side! How incredible is this?
Whether you are just 2 traveling or a group of 8, Papa’Aloa will envelope you in the old world charm of the Big Island with all of the modern conveniences that you would expect of a home of this caliber. Come stay with us. We’re awaiting your arrival.
Each bedroom suite is in it's own private building however, we rent out the entire home to only one party at a time. If you only need the use of one or two of the bedrooms the remaining bedrooms will be vacant during your stay.

I purchaesd this ocean-front property a few years ago. It took me one afternoon to envision this house design as you see it today - it took three years to build it.
Larry & Monica Edwards purchased this house in 2010
I see spending my retirement years with haveing four separate homes to live in - located in four different locations around the world -- spending about three months a year at each. This Hawaii house will be one of them. So - when I'm not using the house - why not let others enjoy the experience.
Sitting in mermaid courtyard - it just feels like a tropical paradice, the kind you dream about when you dream about Hawaii. We have had several honeymooners staying at the house - one day the house will host a wedding - it will be perfect.
We had a wonderful stay at Hale Papa' aloa. This trip was our honeymoon, and I did a lot of research to find the perfect location. When I saw the listing for this house on-line I knew it was the one. The images and description of Hale Papa' aloa are 100% accurate. The house was beautifully decorated and very clean and perfectly maintained. Upon arrival we couldn't believe our eyes when we opened the gate and entered the home. There was something special to see around every corner.
This place is perfect for people who want peace and quiet and not the hustle and bustle of resorts. Shopping is mere minutes away in Hilo and has everything you need to stalk your fridge or your suitcase with good shopping. The backyard is a constant ocean playground where you can see whales every day just sitting eating your breakfast outside on a fabulous patio. Your very own private pool and outdoor shower. 3 spacious bedrooms all with ensuite bath/kitchenettes and the most comfortable king size beds I have ever slept on. The kitchen is where you gather and have fun sitting around eating meals as the frog sing in the night. Spectacular place, with spacious, clean and comfortable living. I recommend this place as a 5 star holiday private resort. Renting a car from the airport to drive on your own schedule and time was perfect for us, group tours was not for us, this way you can drive anywhere on the island and see all the sights that you are interested in. You do not have access to a beach but only a few minutes away from Richardson Beach Park where snorkelling and turtles are abundance.
We really enjoyed our stay in this beautiful house. The view was fantastic, and the house is very comfortable. The area is quiet, so we enjoyed relaxing all morning, and venturing out in the afternoon. This is the wet side of the island in February, so we got the expected mix of sunshine and rain. In our case, we tended to get sunshine in the morning most days, and then it often clouded up and rained in the afternoon. We swam in the pool most days. It is a bit cold getting in, but not too bad. We did not see any whales from the house the week we were there, but we saw a lot on the other side of the island, west of Waimea.
The beds were very comfortable, not too firm or soft. The kitchen and bathrooms were clean. The pool was clean. The mermaid fountain was working fine. The driveway was just a bit tricky for my wife. She tended to spin the tires just a bit going up with our 2wd car. I had no problem. The large sliding glass door is getting a bit sticky and difficult to open, you need to be very careful as it takes a bit of force, and I was worried it might break easily. My family did miss having a TV in the common area for occasional use.
Overall, this was one of our more enjoyable vacations ever. I often caught myself just looking around and smiling. If I get the chance, I will rent here again.
First of all most of these rental or beach houses are more expensive Dec. through Feb. What you should know is Your going to get very wet on this side of the Island this time of year. If your looking for sunshine, this is not the place. You should also know you will need to bring something to protect your food from ants, we lost $400.00 in food by our unwanted guests. It is mentioned in the book when you get there but there are no containers there to protect your food. The pool was not clean, we did little more than stick our toes in it. I don't know who does their cleaning but someone does a poor job, i.e. The microwave had old food in it. the fridge was dirty, the outside grill needed a steam cleaning ect. ect.. It looked like a bachelor lived there. The downstairs unit needs to have some lighting, its very dark and slick going down the outside stairwell. They did have some flash lights there but the batteries we're dead. I did call about the ants but was basically told this is Hawaii you should have known about the insects. Ok, then they should have known enough to have food containers there for the guests. All in all it was beautiful Hawaii but for the money I expected a lot more. I would not recommend this unit to anyone. For the record this was my 4th trip to the Islands and my first housing disappointment.
Beautiful site (when sun is shining). While we had an 11 inch in one day rain storm hit, we enjoyed our stay. Given the weather, we did not use the pool, which is actually just a large free-standing plastic tub, but looks great from the kitchen. The driveway requires an AWD car, since it is not paved and quite steep and pocked up with holes. My anti-lock brakes kicked in going down every time, as I slid in the mud. The WiFi works in the kitchen, but not really in any of the bedrooms, and the only TVs are in the bedrooms, so don't plan on streaming Netflix, or similar. No cell reception (Verizon) that you could count on, anywhere on the property. Had to call to get toilet paper and hand towels, and the garbage had not been emptied in the bedrooms. The fridge in the Master Bedroom suite was unplugged and unpleasant to open. The mermaid fountain failed to work, but the lights did come on. During all the rain (and it does rain on the Hamakua Coast) the parking area became a lake, with at least 2-3 inches of water, making it impossible to enter the car without getting feet soaked. Limited basic supplies (see toilet paper) such as dishwasher detergent, washing machine detergent, softener, etc. The garage is locked and where the supplies are kept, I guess, so don't plan on using that. Could not find the listed futon bed/sofa bed, or the inflatable air mattress. Was kinda counting on that, so my daughter ended up with her aunt instead.
Truly a beautiful vacation home, and in a beautiful location. But be aware of the above. If I were going to stay for a week and only rarely go to town, I would not hesitate to rent again, in a less rainy season. When the sun was out, it was glorious!!!
We have very much enjoyed this peaceful, unique home. This home is different from any home we've stayed at on the Big Island. We love the Hamakua Coast. The history of the sugar plantations, the local towns and people are very interesting. The kitchen and suites are well equipped. We LOVE the outdoor shower. One thing to note is that the pool may be difficult for older people to access.
