La Grande Bastide, in the municipality of Pernes les Fontaines, in the heart of Vaison in Vaucluse, was probably built in the fourteenth century papal territory on old paluds (swamps). She had come to the start like other fortresses in the region. Too far from the villages when the alarm sounded announcing the arrival of spoilers, they had to get by on their own. They were originally a square tower with guard room on the ground floor and first floor house for the Lord and his family. Then there adjoignaient buildings to house livestock, crops and men's work, protected by high walls and towers, feet in wide ditches (moats), powered by water and filled Nesque at the time it is.
When it came back the soil from the ground floor to the drain, we discovered the floor of a kitchen which remained stone sink five feet below the present level. Besides, the old fortified gate could not pass up .... but a man standing on all fours!
Legend has it that there would be an underground home to the castle of Touzon near the village of Thor. And the Grande Bastide (Great House) was a relay Templars ....
This is surely due to the fact that it was held in rent since the Revolution it still has its towers; Indeed, the owners usually cut down these buildings whose roof is problematic sealing. Farmers, themselves, must not and can not, for lack of money, afford to touch the walls.
The small chapel dedicated to St. Anne front of the house, was once on the other side of the Nesque. Giberti (History of the City of Pernes 1738) says that its owner, the Marquis of Fortia, Lord of Montreal, made it completely demolish and rebuild where it is. Practice 'to American' well before its time! ...
