Practice the Art of Living Well. After a day of exploring the Languedoc-Roussillon region of France, it’s nice to know that there is a beautiful, comfortable apartment that awaits you.
Sit and relax in the livingroom / kitchen and enjoy local delicacies you’ve discovered over a bottle of local wine before dinner. The French have perfected the art of living well, and this apartment has been outfitted to help you achieve this with ease.
The kitchen is fully equipped with a fridge, freezer, oven, stove, microwave and dishwasher. The cellier just off the kitchen has a Nespresso coffee maker, kettle, and toaster. There is even a clothes washing machine at your disposal in the apartment.
'L’Appartement Des Artistes' has two bedrooms. The romantic master bedroom features 14 foot high ceilings and a double bed. The guest bedroom has two twin beds and features original beams that date back 200 years. All rooms are bathed with natural light. Each room is freshly made up for your arrival.
We are enthusiastic traveller's who use our wonderful apartment as a base for seeing all of Europe. Everyday we spend in Pézenas teaches us new things about culture, food, wine. We call it 'l'Appartement des Artistes' because we both actively participante in the fine arts.
David and Holly Nielsen purchased this apartment in 2011
When we decided to search for a property in France, we came directly to the Languedoc. The vibe is more laid back then the French Riviera, and the cost of living is far more reasonable. We looked at over 29 properties, and had basically given up.
The day we first saw the apartment, the real estate agent was reluctant to show us this property because it was being completely renovated - it was a disaster!
We knew it was our place the second we saw the front door to the building. As soon as we entered we noticed the old tiles a l'ancienne, and it's incredible staircase. We wanted a property that immediately made one feel that, 'there's no doubt about it, we're in France,' and this one was paying off with every step - and we had not even visited the apartment yet!
Having done numerous home improvement DIY projects, we could see beyond the rubble, and saw this as the incredible property could be and now is.
Of all the apartments in our building, this one retained most of it's original character. 4 meter high ceilings, gigantic light filled windows, original plaster moulding, the marble fireplace and original hexagonal red tiles on the floor. How could we not fall in love with this property.
We know you will also!
We wanted a place that had all the charm of a European apartment with modern conveniences. After we bought the apartment, we went about completely replacing the kitchen and bathrooms with modern energy efficiency equipment - while always maintaining the original charm of this 250 year old building. The modern and the traditional work together in this apartment, not compete.
This apartment is also so well located, we walk everywhere when we are in town. It is in the middle of a thriving village, with everything mere steps away from the building: restaurants, the Old Town, and shopping either atthe local festivals or market. We are far away enough from the over crowded beach towns, but very close to the water. We are surrounded by history and culture, we only needs to ask, 'What am I curious about today?'
Dear David and Holly,
We just spent 2 weeks at your apartment, and we were very impressed how well equipped it was. The apartment is very well located with all shops one might need very close by. The building is old, but the inside of the apartment is certainly new. The kitchen has everything one can think of, the bathroom and shower are great. The beds are very comfortable and the apartment is very nicely furnished, incl. TV, radio. We bought croissents 25 meters away, a fruit and veg store in front and next to that Charcuterie and a small supermarket.
Pezenas, is a very old town that is well maintained and really lovely. Beautiful old buildings, good restaurants and high quality artisan shops; as opposed to run of the mill tourist shops in other towns. It really is special. We had easy visits to other places on roads, which all appeared to have been repaved recently. The countryside is lovely. The distance to the Mediterranean is only about 18-20 kms. During our stay, we visited many interesting places and towns known worldwide. We ate our noon meals at outdoor restaurants every day but one. In short we enjoyed ourselves immensely.
A great place.
What a wonderful stay!
The apartment had everything we needed to make us feel at home.
My husband and I love to cook, we had so much fun gathering all our delicacies, the kitchen was well equipped.
I knew most businesses in town were closed in the afternoon and on Sunday's, but we were not prepared that they were also closed on Monday, it's OK as long as you plan ahead.
Pezenas is a charming village and a good base for exploring the region.
David and Holly were always available, they were great hosts!
We will return.
This apartment is very modern including all of the conveniences of a home in Canada. The kitchen has a dishwasher/stove/oven, as well as a nespresso coffee maker(just like ours). The shower is just what is needed after a long day of touring, hot and high pressured. The beds and bedrooms are comfortable, and provide storage for unpacking. It is a very clean and well maintained home. Perfect as a base for visiting the South of France. The hosts have suggested many ideas for day trips and provided maps and guide books. The food at the restaurants nearby is excellent, with flavours, tastes and presentation second to none. We found an amazing little restaurant on the walking tour of Pezenas. Visiting this apartment in Pezenas will give a traveller the small town in France experience, where you can practice your French! It is more of a French Immersion than Paris. We were very comfortable and enjoyed our week.
A wonderful little apartment, a perfect base for exploration of the beautiful and interesting city of Pezenas.
The apartment contains everything you can ask for, and for my family it has been the perfect place to retreat after a day of exploration. We would have loved to stay longer, and seen more of the city and the surrounding areas.
We also strongly recommend trying caramel and salt ice-cream if one haven't tried that one before - heavenly!
One should remember the "siesta", we haven't got that where I'm from so it might be a little sad if one had thought to roam the shops during that time, since they will be closed. Anyway avoid the siesta or simply enjoy one of the many brasseries or take the trip to the breach!
Lovely apartment and city; It's worth a visit! We will definitely be back.
We rented this property in Pezenas for 8 days but we had to go home after just one night. It did cause us a lot of problems even we are living in France, but it would be impossible if we were coming from USA or other part of the world.
When we came in to the apartment there was a terrible smell of sewer gas from the pipes in the toilet and the bathroom. The odor was so strong that it made us ill. We tried to stay but the smell from the sewer continued and it was in everything in apartment, sheets, pillows, towels, walls and in our cloths in the suitcases. Even though we opened all windows and used a lot of water. We stayed for one night but it was a nightmare to sleep in this smell so we decided to go home.
The owner writes in his contract:
"Plumbing The owner shall not be held responsible monetarily for odours. Our building is over 250 years old. French building codes do not require venting from drains. On very rare occasions, when the apartment building has been dormant; there can be odours. Usually, by running the water and opening the windows these issues can be alleviated quickly."
This is NOT what we have experienced in this apartment.
We have been living in France in many years and know that sewer gas leak is a serious problem which has to be dealt with. It is not only very unpleasant but can be dangerous for the health.
We think that the owner knows about the problem because we have seen that he has tried to manage it by putting a scum/spray on the pipes and many air fresheners in the apartment. It did obviously not solve the problem. We have photos from the apartment.
We have contacted the owner and received our money back but he wrote that he is not aware of the smell. What about his own contract?
We had a very comfortable fortnight in this charming apartment. We would like to echo all the positive comments so far. This is a lovely apartment to stay in and Pezenas is a great base for exploring the local countryside. Many thanks to David and Holly for being such good hosts.
It really was a dream to stay in this wonderful apartment. The decor throughout and the well-equipped kitchen added to a lovely sense of ease and belonging. It was a truely comfortable experience and it lacked for nothing both inside and out - a wonderful bakery, greengrocer and a 'huit a huit' (that stayed open to 7:30!) steps away! And restaurants galore - (try Les Palmiers - wow!). We were really happy that the apartment description and photos more than lived up to our expectations. Kudos to David and Holly for creating such a beautiful retreat!

The 2010 Rough Guide to Languedoc Roussillon calls Pézenas, “One of the most singularly beautiful towns in the French Southwest, endowed with an almost overwhelming concentration of grand architecture”. Thanks to Armand de Bourbon, Prince of Conti, Pézenas was considered the “second Versailles” in the late 17th century. This drew wealth, artists and playwrights of the calibre of Moliere all seeking to gain favor and patronage from the court.
Today Pézenas has an incredibly well preserved Old Town filled with outdoor restaurants, artisans, and entertainment. Seasonal festivals, celebrations and a huge Saturday market take place year-round in Pézenas and it’s neighboring villages. Located in the middle of the largest wine growing region in all of France, and less than a half hour drive from the Mediterranean beaches. Simple pleasures are abound.
With so many things to see and do in the Languedoc-Roussilon, Pézenas is ideally situated. The town of Pézenas itself is beautiful and vibrant. From buying bread and tasty treats at the local boulangerie, to people watching at a one of the town’s outdoor cafés, or exploring one of the many antique shops (Brocantes), Pézenas has so much to offer. The Old Town is rich with history and fine architecture, and full of unique artisan shops and fine restaurants. What’s more, Pézenas has one of the best year-round Saturday Markets (Bio Marché) in the area. All of this and more is steps away from 'L’Appartement des Artistes'.
Some of the finest beaches in Southern France are a short drive away, but there is so much more to this area than sun and sand. Incredible sites like Le Pont de Gard, the medeval ramparts of Carcassone, or visiting cities like Montpellier, Narbonne, Beziers, Nimes and Arles. These all make wonderful day-trips from Pézenas. There are truly so many things to see and do, you will need more than a week just to scratch the surface of this enchanting region.
