We think you'll love your vacation at our property, but don't take it from us. Here are excerpts from reviews of our very happy guests in 2012 (click 'More Details' below for full details of property):

***'The house is superb and every little detail has been thought through'***

***'Beautiful property, even better than the pictures! Peaceful and relaxing. Lots of space. Master bed/bath and fire pit are especielly amazing!'***

***'Beautiful, Relaxing, Perfect! One of the best homes we've stayed in for our family vacation.'***

***We were pleasantly surprised by a beautiful spacious house that had everything we needed (and more). The owners have done so much work to insure that someone's stay is easy and effortless. Modern bathrooms, soft linens, comfortable rooms...***

***Thanks for making it such a smooth rental...We rent 4-5 times a year and this was the easily the most hassle-free..'***

***'This home has the most comfortable bed I have ever slept in at a rental, even better than our bed at home! The master shower is a wonder...The house and entire property were immaculate at checkin, and smelled fresh and clean.'***

***'The house is beautifully renovated and has every amenity you could imagine. (The pictures don’t adequately capture the upscale quality of the home, nor the beauty of the surroundings, and the back screened in porch overlooking a large pasture, custom shower and mammoth fire-pit are unparalleled!) The owners have designed the home with renters in mind and have spared no expense in doing so (high end grill, fully stocked kitchen with high end appliances and cookware, games, books, and videos for all ages, large high efficiency washer and dryer.) The house was in spotless condition..'***

***'Can't wait to return, Johnson's On Bomoseen is now a very special place for our family!'***

***'The firepit was amazing'***

***'Very comfortable' 'The house is beautiful...a perfect place to relax'***

***'Pampered people we are now, your house is perfect!'***

One of Vermont's historical gems and an important part of Lake Bomoseen's history since the mid 1800's, Johnson's On Bomoseen was originally an important and popular destination hotel on Lake Bomoseen, having first opened it's doors in the late 1870's when Colonel Endearing Johnson and his brother came home from the US Civil War and decided to convert the 900 acre farm into a destination hotel. This gem of a property is once again available to guests as a vacation rental property.

Johnson's On Bomoseen was operated by the Johnson family continuously from the late 1860's until the 1950's. In 1933 the original Johnson's on Bomoseen Hotel burned down, and on it's original foundation the Johnson family built the current home (and built a new hotel elsewhere on the property which eventually also burned down in the 1950's). While the original farm was over 900 acres, over the years the Johnson family sold all but the remaining 22.6 acres, leaving the most desirable prime pastural and waterfront lands and a beautiful country home set back from the lake on the original hotel site and foundation.

Today, Johnson's On Bomoseen enjoys 300' of waterfront on Lake Bomoseen with a 30' aluminum dock (in season) and 715' of waterfront on Love's Marsh Waterfowl Reserve, it's own perfectly manicured croquet court (in season), walking trails perfect for hiking, snow shoeing and cross country skiing, and beautiful pastures and a secluded mature grotto.

About the 2200 sq. ft 3+ bedroom home: Built in 1933 upon the foundation of the original Johnson's On Bomoseen Hotel, the current home is set back from the lake and features 3 spacious bedrooms including a beautifully appointed Master Suite, 2 1/2 fully updated baths, multiple living areas including a gas fireplace, and a fully equipped and updated kitchen. There are also two furnished screened in porches and a formal dining area with seating for 10.

About Lake Bomoseen: In early days the Native Americans loved to camp near these waters. The name, Bomoseen, or 'Beautiful waters,' indicates the appreciation the natives had for one of the loveliest sheets of water on earth. Lake Bomoseen is a freshwater lake in the western part of the state of Vermont in the towns of Castleton and Hubbardton in Rutland County. It is the largest lake that lies entirely within Vermont's boundaries, with a surface area of approximately 9.6 square kilometres (2,400 acres). A portion of the lake's shoreline is contained within Bomoseen State Park. Most of the remaining area around the lake is privately owned. The lake has such recreational accommodations as a public beach, marinas, waterfront restaurants, and public boat launches, in addition to the state park. There are approximately 1,000 residences around the lake, as well as shopping, restaurants and other commercial facilities.

Neshobe Island on Lake Bomoseen played weekend escape to members of New York's elite literary set, who met weekly at Manhattan's Algonquin Hotel, and their friends from the mid 1920s to early '40s. Ethel Barrymore, Irving Berlin, Vivian Leigh, Harpo Marx, Laurence Olivier, Dorothy Parker and other celebrities frequented literary critic Alexander Woolcott's 7-acre island retreat, which was sold in February 1998 for $675,000 to a New York family that intends to live there year-round.

Activities on and around Lake Bomoseen include:

About Peter

My family has been vacationing at Lake Bomoseen since I was 1 year old in 1967. It's been a magical place for my family and now for our children, and one of our favorite places on earth. I've personally lived and travelled a good bit of the world, and have lived in Austria, parts of Europe, Seattle, New Jersey, New York and Vermont.

Peter purchased this estate in 2011
Why Peter chose Lake Bomoseen

Since 1967, Lake Bomoseen has always been our favorite place to return to or come home to. After my parents retired on Lake Bomoseen over a decade ago, it was only a matter of time before my own family had a home here. Having walked past this property ever since I was a little boy, its' a dream come true to own this historic property that is so well known here in the community. For many years most everyone here in the community has enjoyed the properties hiking and walking trails by permission from the previous owners and now by me. It's always been a very special place, particularly since the Johnson family has owned it since the 1800's and were well respected members of the community. Almost all of the surrounding houses were at one time part of the Johnson's original 900 acre farm. I'm proud to have now carry forward the Johnson's legacy of sharing this beautiful property with the community and guests of Johnson's on Bomoseen.

Great time at Bomoseen Lake House

The house was beautiful and clean. It was not too far from the mountain (we skied ant Killington for two days) and it was really quiet. It was perfect for our group of ten. We would definitely recommend this property to a friend or a relative and even come back ourselves.

Great weekend ski getaway

Submitted: February 4, 2013 Stayed: February 2013
This house on Lake Bomoseen was a great find for a long ski and Super Bowl weekend getaway from NYC. Clean, well-kept and well-appointed, comfortably big for our group of 3 adult couples, an infant, and two dogs. ~45 minutes to all of Okemo, Killington, and Pico. Great value for the price, we had a great time and would go back.

charming winter retreat

What a wonderful stay we had over new year's eve at Johnson's On Bomoseen. the house is beautiful and immaculate and was decorated in the holiday spirit! The bedrooms were the perfect size for the six of us to sleep comfortably in (but we all agreed there was more than enough room to sleep 10). The common rooms were laid out in a way that made it easy to for us all to hang out together but also easy to find quiet space for some alone time when we needed it. The large dining table was perfect for family meals and some late-night card games. And the owner was very responsive with any questions we had before and during our stay. It's an easy drive from NYC and the drive to the slopes (whether it's stratton or killington or okemo) is fine to do on a daily basis. We all can't wait to go back in the summertime and check out what the lake has to offer then!

Lake Bomoseen Getaway

We loved staying at the house house on Lake Bomoseen, we were in awe from the moment pulling in. The furniture and decorating is beautiful as well as comfy. Every detail was thought out to make sure our stay was a pleasant experience. I especially enjoyed sitting in front of the fire place and cooking meals in the well stocked kitchen.
The property is well taken care of even the lawn furniture is inviting. We plan to come back when we can enjoy the lake and croquet court.
