About Donya Knudsen

My family has lived in Louisiana for about 300 years, dating back to the Cajun Expulsion. We have owned homes in New Orleans for over twenty years, raised our children here, become grandparents here, and truly love living in this wonderful city. We hope and believe that the next thousand generations of Causey’s and Knudsen’s will have a connection to this place that we cherish as it has become a journey both appreciated and worthwhile.

Donya Knudsen purchased this house in 1997

Why Donya Knudsen chose Faubourg Lafayette

I recall looking for weeks with nothing that really met my expectations. I wondered whether my home as I imagined it did not exist. I finally tried an agent that completely understood. She showed me one property and I knew the moment I walked in the door. My first home is now my guest house. May you feel much as I did at that first viewing many years ago.

What makes this house unique

This nineteenth century New Orleans home is ideally suited for families and friends who want to enjoy Mardi Gras, French Quarter Festival, Jazz Festival, Saints home games, weddings, and reunions while centrally and comfortably located at the edge of the Garden District. Easy access by streetcar to Audubon Zoo, Parks, Tulane and Loyola Universities, The Superdome, restaurants such as Commander's Palace, Delmonico, and the beautiful veranda at the Columns Hotel. The French Quarter and historic Marigny neighborhoods are only minutes away by streetcar or short taxi ride.

Inside you will find items from Pakistan, Greece, Spain, Indonesia, Korea, Nigeria, Honduras, Scotland, Florida, Texas, and Louisiana. You will find an extensive home library of good books including children’s books.

You will find places to be together as well as plenty of places where you can have privacy. All of the bedrooms are located upstairs including the master suite which enjoys its own bathroom. In addition to a more formal parlor, there is also sun room which is bright and cheerful. The kitchen is fully furnished with modern appliances, and there is a washer and dryer for your convenience. It is comfortable and unique home and we believe you will truly enjoy staying here.

This home has nineteen windows and twelve foot ceilings which give the house an airy comfortable feel. Throughout the home you will find original crown molding, ceiling medallions, and Venetian glass light fixtures. It has two sets of French doors in the sun room that lead out to a private courtyard shaded by a magnificent crepe myrtle, and surrounded by camellias.

This fully furnished home is ideally priced for groups of people requiring more than one room at peak celebration times in the city. The convenience of its location and the bonus associated with the privacy of a home makes this location ideal for groups or families wishing to have a unique experience living as a 'local' New Orleanian.

Guestbook comments from the owner

We thoroughly enjoyed our stay in your beautiful home!! We appreciated all the hard work that you have put into maintaining and decorating it. And we were very comfortable.

My father had a great time, getting to visit his old neighborhood and the family plot in the cemetery, plus the aquarium, zoo, and insectarium. Our best meal was at Mandinas, and we have several other fine meals.

Many thanks.

Everyone was extremely impressed and pleased with the beauty and comfort of the house. So spacious and nicely furnished with room to spare. Being able to fellowship downstairs before retiring to bed was a huge plus. Thanks for giving us memories that will last for a long, long time! Everyone is still glowing about the highlights of the entire vacation weekend.

A perfect place

  • 5 of 5

This was a perfect place for my family to stay for Mardi Gras and the wedding of my daughter. Mr. Causey was unbelievably helpful. We used this as wedding central (there was plenty of room to store all the things we needed for the wedding and the personal items for our family). The upstairs was a great place also the master suite was perfect for my daughter's family which includes two toddlers under 3. We hosted the rehearsal picnic the night before the wedding in the back and it was so nice. Finally, I love the location so that we could watch the parades but have a bathroom just 2 blks. away. Thank you so very much, Anice and Bruce Tedford

Owner's Response: Tedford family: Thank you so much for this review. Your expertise in negotiating a wedding during Mardi Gras is impressive. It is of some relief to me that the efforts we have put into the house over the last year have made this the place we want it to be. I am happy that you found it what you wanted it to be as well. Warm Regards, Donya and Temple

Let the good times roll!

  • 5 of 5

Our criteria list for a rental home in New Orleans was long, but this house had everything: good price, bed/bath combo; location; fully equipped kitchen; a big room for the family; reliable internet connection.

The house is charming with lots of character, both in its design and in its decorations. It’s not new; it's not shiny, but it's clean and comfortable with countless eye-catching objects that repeatedly stopped us mid-path between living room and kitchen, bed to bath, upstairs and down. These wonder-full decorations are everywhere: on the walls, on the shelves, and hiding in corners. Anyone who is a fan of the movie "A Christmas Story" will enjoy the leg lamp hiding in the first floor hallway. Look for the mounted longhorns, the paper mache head on the sideboard, the juxtaposition of a hookah next to a portrait of the Sisters-of-Charity founder... I don't want to say too much; I don’t want to ruin the surprises you'll find in every room!

New Orleans’ houses can feel chilly during the winter months. No worries here. There’s central heating upstairs, and downstairs there are various appropriately-sized space heaters in each room. The beds were comfortable and the bathrooms clean. There were six of us taking showers in the mornings, and only once did someone have a lukewarm shower. Towels, pillows and extra blankets were abundantly available.

The kitchen had everything we needed to prepare and enjoy our crawfish-boil Christmas dinner. Our son-in-law needed good Internet access to keep in touch with his office and the connection was reliable though at times he needed to sit near the server.

Located north of St Charles Avenue on the edge of the Garden District, Magazine Street is only 7 blocks away with restaurants, coffee shops, music and shopping within walking distance for the more athletic; these old bones opted to ride. We rented a car and never had trouble finding a parking place in front of the house. If you don’t have a car, the St. Charles Trolley is just 2 ½ blocks away. The 2-mile ride to the French Quarter takes about 20 minutes, though you might have to wait 20 minutes before the trolley picks you up.

The owners are delightful, very easy to work with, and very attentive. For example, we brought our own tiny Christmas tree, but there was one waiting for us in a storage closet, too. They have thoughtfully provided everything you will need for a memorable stay. We highly recommend this property.

Authentic and Amazing!!

  • 5 of 5

A Real Authentic New Orleans home-- and the owners are just as charming and warm. My family from Canada LOVED the house with all its charm and eclectic mixes. A VERY comfortable home that is well located-easy to get to Magazine Street, The Quarter, and lots of restaurants. Tons of rooms to either gather together or be by yourself. Beds were extremely comfortable and the kitchen had everything we needed (although we only ate breakfast at the house). My wife and I will rent again when we return from Houston for our next visit-meanwhile in Canada my family is raving--not only about NOLA but about the outstanding accommodations!! I can not say THANK YOU enough-for making this such a memorable experience!

Owner's Response: So great reviews like this are bonus. My husband met these guests on their exploration visit this summer. There they sat on the back patio as if they were old friends. He had emphasized to me the need to make this stay a great one having enjoyed the short gathering in his secret garden at the rear of the house. I am pleased and honored to have ing been part of a great visit. Thank you for the glowing review. I look forward to your return visits in the future.

CHARMING NEW ORLEANS EXPERIENCE

  • 5 of 5

Can't say enough about how much we enjoyed our stay! 6 girls, plenty of room. This house has all the charm you want to experience on your NOLA visit - 2 blocks from St. Charles and the streetcars. There must be about 20 restaurants within 3 blocks - everything from the Trolley Stop to Delmonico's. The beds and furniture are all comfy, there are 2 coffee pots (AMEN!), TV in every room (although why would anyone stay in to watch TV?), and more. The house was very clean, easy to coordinate arrival and departure. Owners are accessible and helpful. We are already planning to stay here again on our trip next year. 100% recommend this as a place to stay.

The beauty of Audubon and City Parks with access to walking, picknicking, golfing, tennis, and museums is also only a fifteen minute drive by auto.
