About Donya Knudsen

My family has lived in Louisiana for about 300 years, dating back to the Cajun Expulsion. We have owned homes in New Orleans for over twenty years, raised our children here, become grandparents here, and truly love living in this wonderful city. We hope and believe that the next thousand generations of Causey’s and Knudsen’s will have a connection to this place that we cherish as it has become a journey both appreciated and worthwhile.

Donya Knudsen purchased this house in 1997

Why Donya Knudsen chose Faubourg Lafayette

I recall looking for weeks with nothing that really met my expectations. I wondered whether my home as I imagined it did not exist. I finally tried an agent that completely understood. She showed me one property and I knew the moment I walked in the door. My first home is now my guest house. May you feel much as I did at that first viewing many years ago.

What makes this house unique

This nineteenth century New Orleans home is ideally suited for families and friends who want to enjoy Mardi Gras, French Quarter Festival, Jazz Festival, Saints home games, weddings, and reunions while centrally and comfortably located at the edge of the Garden District. Easy access by streetcar to Audubon Zoo, Parks, Tulane and Loyola Universities, The Superdome, restaurants such as Commander's Palace, Delmonico, and the beautiful veranda at the Columns Hotel. The French Quarter and historic Marigny neighborhoods are only minutes away by streetcar or short taxi ride.

Inside you will find items from Pakistan, Greece, Spain, Indonesia, Korea, Nigeria, Honduras, Scotland, Florida, Texas, and Louisiana. You will find an extensive home library of good books including children’s books.

You will find places to be together as well as plenty of places where you can have privacy. All of the bedrooms are located upstairs including the master suite which enjoys its own bathroom. In addition to a more formal parlor, there is also sun room which is bright and cheerful. The kitchen is fully furnished with modern appliances, and there is a washer and dryer for your convenience. It is comfortable and unique home and we believe you will truly enjoy staying here.

This home has nineteen windows and twelve foot ceilings which give the house an airy comfortable feel. Throughout the home you will find original crown molding, ceiling medallions, and Venetian glass light fixtures. It has two sets of French doors in the sun room that lead out to a private courtyard shaded by a magnificent crepe myrtle, and surrounded by camellias.

This fully furnished home is ideally priced for groups of people requiring more than one room at peak celebration times in the city. The convenience of its location and the bonus associated with the privacy of a home makes this location ideal for groups or families wishing to have a unique experience living as a 'local' New Orleanian.

Guestbook comments from the owner

We thoroughly enjoyed our stay in your beautiful home!! We appreciated all the hard work that you have put into maintaining and decorating it. And we were very comfortable.

My father had a great time, getting to visit his old neighborhood and the family plot in the cemetery, plus the aquarium, zoo, and insectarium. Our best meal was at Mandinas, and we have several other fine meals.

Many thanks.

Perfect location, terrific staff

This home is wonderful for groups looking for a historic house in a quiet neighborhood with quick access to the top attractions in New Orleans. Just 2 blocks from the St Charles trolley, this home is a good balance of old Victorian, eclectic whimsy and modern conveniences. During our family reunion, we enjoyed early morning breakfast In the garden, evening cocktails in the living room and laughter and stories late into the night on the front porch. We enjoyed the convenience of being between the Quarter and Uptown, and all the things in between. Museums, parks, cafes, late night bars, and cool shops are just a few blocks or a trolley ride away. Don't expect a gutted modern interior; Donya kept the authenticity of her family home but added different character and fun to each room. You'll enjoy exploring the house to find its treasures.

Donya and the house manager, Temple, are wonderful people and made us feel very welcome. They went beyond most in providing any information we could desire on the area, the house, transportation, restaurants, entertainment discounts, etc., and made sure we knew they were just a phone call away if we needed anything. Plus we had plenty of bottled water and other amenities to make our stay very easy.

We will definitely be back again, and highly recommend this property.

One note: It is true the house is not set up for people who have difficulty with stairs. There's no handrails on the front porch (but you can use the back steps and go through the gate) and there's no landing on the long stairs to the second floor. However, these are minor for most people, and the futon in the sun room is quite comfortable.

Owner's Response: Thank you so much for this thoughtful review. I am pleased that you appreciated this old home. I am certainly sensitive to the stair situation (20 steps to the second floor) and as you have kindly indicated, the downstairs has a comfortable sleeping space for those unable to negotiate the climb. I am hoping to add a sleeper sofa in the future. It has made it up to the top five on the list of things to make this a better place. With some good fortune, I may get that in this year. I would welcome a return trip whenever the opportunity arises. Warm regards, Donya

Spacious and very New Orleans-esque!

  • 5 of 5

The place was perfect! There were 6 of us visiting for a bechelorette party. The house was huge! We could have easily fit several more girls. The bathrooms are small, but definitely manageable. The hosts were very communicative prior to our trip and the details were easy to manage. House was clean and the location was great. Thanks for a memorable stay in NO!

Owner's Response: With all the rain and the house reno going on next door (I think they are finished with a great home to live in--congratulations to our new neighbors) it was a bit of an adventure to get ready. We did the spring garden prep up until you arrived. The house cleaning staff did their usual great job. I was extremely happy to be able to deliver something that you have liked. I am happy to host these parties for brides young and otherwise. Thanks for being a great group. Thank you for a good review. Regards, Donya

Simply Amazing!

  • 5 of 5

The house was absolutely perfect! I rented the property for myself and six friends for my Bachelorette trip to NOLA. Parking on the street was easy and very convenient. The house is located within walking distance of the streetcar and Magazine Street. There was plenty of room for all of us, and the two full baths and one half bath made the process of seven girls getting ready super easy. The beds were so comfortable, and the neighborhood is very quiet. We found everything just as the "Arrival Letter" from the property owner said it should be. I had an amazing trip, and this rental is really a gem. I highly recommend this to anyone who is planning on traveling to NOLA with a big group. I have absolutely no complaints. I fully intend on staying at this rental in the future!!

Owner's Response: So thank you so much for this. Interestingly I have nothing in my notes that said you were celebrating your bachelorette party, but I am so pleased this proved to be what you were looking for. I have started to get a few requests for this type of stay and have been happy to receive guests participating. I have regretfully missed the opportunity to congratulate you and wish you the absolute best for the future. It was an honor to have been part of your life as you move on to something new. Warm regards, Donya

Everyone was extremely impressed and pleased with the beauty and comfort of the house. So spacious and nicely furnished with room to spare. Being able to fellowship downstairs before retiring to bed was a huge plus. Thanks for giving us memories that will last for a long, long time! Everyone is still glowing about the highlights of the entire vacation weekend.

A perfect place

  • 5 of 5

This was a perfect place for my family to stay for Mardi Gras and the wedding of my daughter. Mr. Causey was unbelievably helpful. We used this as wedding central (there was plenty of room to store all the things we needed for the wedding and the personal items for our family). The upstairs was a great place also the master suite was perfect for my daughter's family which includes two toddlers under 3. We hosted the rehearsal picnic the night before the wedding in the back and it was so nice. Finally, I love the location so that we could watch the parades but have a bathroom just 2 blks. away. Thank you so very much, Anice and Bruce Tedford

Owner's Response: Tedford family: Thank you so much for this review. Your expertise in negotiating a wedding during Mardi Gras is impressive. It is of some relief to me that the efforts we have put into the house over the last year have made this the place we want it to be. I am happy that you found it what you wanted it to be as well. Warm Regards, Donya and Temple
