Volcano Cottage Rental Photos and Description

Cottage, 1 Bedroom + Convertible bed(s), 1 Bath (Sleeps 4)

Aloha! E komo mai. Nou ka hale. Welcome to our Bid Island home, or hale (pronounced HA-LAY). Located in Volcano Village, and just minutes from Hawaii Volcanoes National Park, we invite you to make our house your home away from home during your next visit.

Hale Hubner is perfect for friends, couples, and small groups or families that wish to experience the Puna lifestyle at its best. We also offer a retreat for Kama'aina looking to get away. Comfortably nestled in the verdant hapu'u fern and ohia rainforest, you will find our location offers relaxing comfort and privacy all the while keeping you close to the variety nearby attractions the Big Island has to offer.

Our house is a cozy 750 sq ft studio-style custom-built 1 bed/1 bath that sleeps 2-4 people comfortably. The warm pine wood interior naturally juxtaposes the green views of lush vegetation visible from all the large picture windows throughout the house.

A spacious sun deck greets you as you exit the house, and provides excellent views of the vibrant stars during the dark evenings. On clear nights, the glow of Kilauea's Halema'uma'u crater is just visible through the tree line!

A master bed area is walled off for your privacy, and a queen-size futon in the main living area folds out to provide a second bed for additional travelers. The main living/sleeping area is located on the second level of the house and is only accessible by stairs; therefore, we are unfortunately not accessible for visitors with disabilities that prevent the climbing of steps. For families wishing to stay with us, we prefer at least one adult per child please.

We strive to provide a warm and inviting stress-free yet affordable alternative to the big resorts. We hope you like what you see here and choose Hale Hubner for you next visit to the Big Island. Please feel free to visit our website to see more of what Hale Hubner has to offer at halehubner.com Mahalo!

About Matt Hubner

We are Tara and Matt Hubner. We currently live in Texas, but our hearts reside on the Big Island. We purchased our house in 2011 in hopes that we will live there permanently one day. We try to return as often as possible, but gladly open our home to you when we cannot be there to enjoy it.

Matt Hubner purchased this cottage in 2011

Why Matt Hubner chose Volcano

The National Park and the volcanoes of the Big Island hold a special place in our hearts. We love all that the park has to offer in its natural wonders. The town of Volcano is nicely situated adjacent to the park, but there is also so much more to do nearby that it makes for the perfect location to enjoy the Big Island. We love the beaches and the snorkeling/diving all within the distance of a short drive. We love the diverse nature of the people of the area and the aloha spirit that they truly share with those who don't try and bring the mainland go-go-go attitude with them. We love the nearby markets that you can find on a daily basis. We also enjoy the shops and modern amenities of the nearby towns and Hilo. It's hard to beat the cool weather at 4000 ft elevation. So whether you're interested outdoor activities, peace and relaxation, or restaurants and shopping; there's everything one needs within just a quick drive from here. All this plus the fact that there are little to no crowds makes it our favorite place in the world!

What makes this cottage unique

One of our favorite things to do is drive out at night to the Kilauea Crater overlook. It's only a 10-15 minute drive to the crater rim from our house, and the views of the glowing caldera are mesmerizing. We try to go out every night that we can, and often there are people playing music or dancing hula for Madame Pele, and this makes it quite an experience. We've found that on clear nights it is possible to see the glow from Kilauea from our lanai and from the back of our property. We enjoy ordering takeout from some of the nearby restaurants and dining on our lanai under the stars.

Guestbook comments from the owner

Review from TripAdvisor. "Wow! Our stay at Hale Hubner was amazing! It was more then what we expected. Unfortunately we only stayed there for 2 nights, it has everything for a long stay for 2 persons. The location is very private in the forest of Vulcano and the large windows showed this view in every room. The neighbourhood is very friendly with neightbourwatch. We loved everything. The friendly e-mails from the owners and personal touch with pictures of the family made us feel at home. Beautiful interieur with a relaxing sofa. Good wifi. The large balcony including a new gass bbq and easy chairs where very relaxing and convinient. The bed was soft with seperate electric blankets on the matras, for extra heating. Because I'm always cold I turned it on just a half an hour before jumping into bed, my husband liked it just the way it was. We didn't use the woodstove, but I can imagen the use of it is very cosy because it can be cold in the evening and night. The kitchen is fully suplied. If we ever return in the future we will definately stay here again. The town is small, but you have to visit Greg and Joyce with their kids at cafe Ohi'a to enjoy a delicious sandwich for lunch. Their kindness warmed our harts."

Charming Volcano cottage!

  • 5 of 5
One of the best things about this cottage is the owner Matt who is terrific at responding to questions and sent lots of valuable information about the cottage and the Volcano area in general. The cottage is extremely comfortable and has tons of charm and we especially enjoyed the fireplace and the large picture windows looking out into the rain forest! I enjoyed some of the best sleep I've had in a long time as his cottage is extremely peaceful and quiet.

Lush, Secluded and Comfortable

  • 5 of 5
We loved the three nights we spent here in November. Having a well-equipped kitchen was very helpful since nearby food options are limited and kinda pricey. The home is a beautiful nest amongst the tree ferns. It was cold and very wet during our stay (poured every day...but that's why it's a gorgeous rainforest!), so if you're looking for a warm, tropical vacation this location might not be your best bet. The National Park is very close, and this isn't a bad jumping off point for Puna and Hilo attractions either. Just bring warm layers and rain gear!

Beautiful Jungle Cottage

  • 5 of 5
As part of three weeks staying at five different locations around the Big Island, my husband and I spent four nights at Hale Hubner and found it a beautiful, quiet refuge to come home to after a day of exploring Volcano National Park, (the entrance to which is mere minutes away). It was gorgeous and spotlessly clean. Everything worked perfectly, from wi-fi to washing machine. And we recommend that anyone who is staying through a Sunday morning go to the wonderful farmer's market in the village. The tree ferns and other foliage that surrounded the cottage were beautiful. We'll recommend this cottage to our friends.

Excellent place to stay-great hosts

  • 5 of 5
Great rental experience , Matt was a great host providing me with all the info I needed before and during arrival. I appreciated the forethought Matt had for guests in his home. It was a nice peaceful experience relaxing in a tropical jungle. It was really close to volcano's national park which was perfect for excursions.

We have stayed at several VRBO rentals, and this is truly our favorite! The directions were exact - a good thing since we arrived in an incredible downpour which decreased visibility (Hurricane Ana was passing to the west of the island that day). It is in a neighborhood, but VERY private. Nice to have parking under the home, with said rain. Up a set of stairs to a wonderful balcony perfect for wine, meals, and reading that also had pots of fresh herbs to use for cooking. The home itself is a large open square with a bump out for the bed. The walls separating the bedroom go to about 8 feet, but not all the way to the vault of the roof line - so the bedroom and bath are "open air" to the main living area. the bathroom is in the bedroom enclosure. For the 2 of us, not a problem, but something of which to be aware of if more than one couple is staying. Bring an eye mask as the sun comes up at 6!
This is the best stocked place at which we have stayed - a well stocked kitchen both in cooking equipment/decent chopping knives (unusual to find in a rental!) and in condiments/spices, along with a gas grill on the patio. In addition, there are umbrellas and plastic rain ponchos (handy in a rain forest), snorkel fins and 2 of those grass woven beach pad things. There were also toddler toys, a port-a-crib, and past editions of several Hawaii guidebooks for use.
Probably the best thing, though, was how the owners emailed so much information about the area and were even in contact with us regarding the Hurricane and any possible upsets the weather may have brought to our visit (thankfully, there were none. After the rainy initial day and night rains, the days were wonderful for hiking in Volcano Park). Though we have been lucky to always work with good owners, we have not had an experience with so much available information to help us plan in addition to the "what to do if" email before the Hurricane passed, and their kindness was very much appreciated!

Owner's Response: Thank you, thank you, thank you for the thorough review! We love all of our feedback (even if it’s one sentence - or one word), but it really helps us to hear what’s working well for our guests, and this is so very helpful. We’re so thankful that Ana only gave us rain for a couple of days and nothing more, and how wonderful that you got to experience the beautiful clear days/nights that followed! We keep adding more amenities, and it’s nice to see they are appreciated. One of the things that sets the VRBO industry apart from big hotels and chains is the personal touches and dealing with owners one on one. We don’t have a bunch of houses. This is it. And we want to serve our guests well because in a way you are helping us take care of our home that we value so much. I’m very satisfied to hear that our communications helped and thrilled that you had a great stay. Aloha and mahalo nui loa.
