Wonderful Wintery Getaway

  • 5 of 5

Stayed for a 3-day extended-family weekend with Janice C. (see other review). We selected this location for the cozy looking couches, the fireplace, and plenty of extras that would entertain our group during the weekend. A blizzard was approaching, along with frigid temperatures, so we knew we'd mostly be indoors.

What a treat that weekend turned out to be. The owners were super easy to work with, and helpful, but not at all intrusive. Before we arrived, I contacted the owner and she helped me arrange for a bouquet of flowers to be placed in the master bedroom, as a special treat for my mother. The owner took care of everything and the flowers were perfect! After our first night there, the expected blizzard was in full force and one of our cars was stuck in the snow. Not only was there someone there to plow the driveway/walkway, but he also got our car unstuck. Nice!

Nearby was a cute little family owned grocery store called DeMond's. They had everything we needed and even brought the groceries out to the car for us.

Back at the cottage, life was good. The photos do not show that the living room, kitchen, and pool/ping pong table are all in a large Great Room area that looks out to the water. This open space concept is ideal for a group vacation. While cooking we were not isolated from the group and had everything we needed close by. Of course, there are individual rooms to retreat to, but most of our time was spent in that space. Literally, everything we needed was provided, and then some - large ice machine, tons of cooking utensils, spices, oils, vinegars, Keurig, cozy blankets, and more. It's also really nice that every bedroom has its own bathroom - great for privacy. There is a how-to binder that explains everything in the house, and includes information on the area.

On our final day there, the skies cleared, the sun shown, and we all enjoyed a day walking around Saugatuck and doing some winter shopping. Just enough was open to make it fun, but not crowded.

We all talked about wanting to come back during the warm weather months to enjoy all of the outdoor perks offered at this location. Nicely done owners.

Perfect for a stormy winter weekend

  • 5 of 5

We chose this place for its size, the indoor pool table/ping pong table, dart board, wrap around seating, dog friendly status, and nothing was a disappointment. The owner was extremely helpful. A bonus turned out to be the warmed spot on the shore of the waterway where 2swans and a variety of water birds gathered. Due to the winds of the blizzard, birds soared inthe thermals for hours, including three bald eagles. We had a wonderful time!

PERFECT PLACE!

  • of 5

This house was PERFECT for a getaway weekend. There were 11 adults and two dogs just looking to have a good weekend. The house had plenty of space and the lower level allowed us all to sit on couches, hang out while people were cooking, and play lots of games. The steam shower, sauna and hot tub were key to our winter stay. I would recommend the place to families, friends, etc. It was clean, convenient, and such a pleasure. You can't go wrong!

Loved Lorrimar

  • of 5

This was a spectacular experience in the lap of luxury. Owners were very accommodating. The house is high on a hill so that from the Master Bedroom you’re eye to eye with seagulls – and eagles! Saw three bald eagles at once, and wish we had brought binoculars. We treated our bodies with the sauna, hot tub, massage chair, treadmill, even had an outside bonfire on Christmas night. Spent quite a while at the pool table. We were glad to have brought our own coffee maker (alternately, bring Keurig cups). Overall a splendid time. No complaints.

Great place for any type of vacation quiet or not.

  • 3 of 5

We were surprised to find a steep driveway to the house. Property was accurately described except for the attached apartment that is rented out & the fact that the only inside dining area, besides the kitchen counter, is the ping pong table. We used that a few times. There is a table outside that the 8 of us crowded around a few times. The house is clean; some maintenance is needed outside. We were pleasantly surprised to find a tiny beach where the kayaks were. The boys & grandpa enjoyed fishing & caught several large mouthed bass right from the pier. The fire pit is great. We ordered firewood that was delivered & had fun times around the fire every night. We had an order for life vests to be delivered to the house by FedEx which we never received but they said was left by the garage. So I wouldn't recommend you do that. We had very good customer service. The decks are large enough to accommodate different activities going on at the same time. We were disappointed with the high prices in the area for food, goods, etc. we went to Meijer's in Holland for food to prepare at the house. I did expect better linens & sizes of bedrooms/bathrooms for the high cost of renting the house.

"Luxury" a Matter of Opinion

  • 2 of 5

This place did not meet the expectation of "luxury" as stated in the property title. Although it did have a good location overlooking the river, I felt there were some important things left out of the description. First of all the picture of the front of the house shows the retaining wall still intact. During our visit, the retaining wall had crumbled into the water revealing the not so luxurious rusty sheet metal behind it. The grassy area was infested with ants as evidence by the hundreds of ant hills, and not suitable for sitting, even on a chair. The picture showing the hot tub overlooking the water was not accurate. The hot tub has been moved to the side of the house beside the air conditioner. When we arrived, the water in the hot tub was cloudy and looked like it hadn't been changed in a while. We called the owner who came over and added chemicals. The next day we called again when it was still cloudy and requested it be changed out with some fresh water which was accommodated.

As far as the inside of the house, we were disgruntled to find that the "bonus" 4th bedroom is a bed in the laundry room! The bed is pushed up against the wall such that there is no room for a side table, lamp, alarm clock or other "luxurious" items such as these. The bed sinks in the middle and I felt as though I were laying on the side of a hill all night. They had enclosed the space around the furnace and the door was located in our laundry/bedroom. Every hour I could hear the air conditioner drain which sounded like a grown man "peeing". I almost said awoke, but that would imply that I actually slept. Needless to say this room was abandoned and my husband and I slept in the living room. That bed was only suitable for holding my suitcase.

The bedroom with the built-in drawers has a very firm waterbed. I don't know if a waterbed is considered luxurious, but no one in our family wanted to sleep on it.

There is no dining room for family style meals. The accommodation is a table cloth over the ping pong table.

Because the place had been renovated to make a second unit, the common living spaces were in the lowest level of the house. Although it had good lighting with the sliding glass doors, it still felt like being in the basement.

We did enjoy the kayaks, the pool table, ping pong, darts, and being close to downtown Saugatuk, however I would not recommend it as a full four bedroom rental. In my opinion, was a 3 bdrm rental at a 4 bdrm rate.

Owner's Response: Within 5 minutes of arriving, these guests called to let me know “they reviewed a lot”. Their complaint: the 4th bonus bedroom was not a full bedroom. It is listed right in the heading of the house as a 3 bedroom with 4th bonus bedroom. I explain in the listing that we turned our exercise room into a bonus bedroom with a Queen bed, Flat screen and across from a bathroom. Many guests appreciate the extra space. They agreed this was in the listing and we were agreeing. Their resolution was money back or they would review me poorly. According to them, they stay at many VRBO homes, I assume using this technique of threatening to get money back. When that didn’t work, they began to complain about the hot tub. The spa guy was there before they arrived but I sent my maintenance man over to check it. It tested at the right levels and the water looked clear. I still arranged for the spa company to check it the next day. They found it in good order, the water was new the week before. The guests were out when the spa technician arrived and didn’t realize that I had sent him. Of course, they called me once again asking for money back. When I told them the spa guy was already there and everything was checking out ok but he would change the water, the guests still wanted new water which I had him do. At this point, they stopped call me. I certainly don’t mind if someone has a legitimate concern and as you can see even from their review, I’m quick to respond. I know you are on vacation and I’d like to make it as enjoyable as possible. I try to accommodate any concerns or questions the guests have. Most people have been wonderful guests and I’ve enjoyed having them at the house. This bad experience with someone trying to threaten a poor review to get money back is unfortunate. I’m glad I’ve had 3 years of great guests and great reviews. We did have a huge storm which took down some of the retaining wall. They never called me about this or any of the other items they complained about but I had the retaining wall repaired immediately when I saw it. I had the lawn company treat for ant, although I didn’t see any evidence. The ping pong table can be used for a table. There are chairs that fit around it. There is also counter top seating and outdoor seating. I’m not sure what they are talking about with the lower level. It is the beach level. The kitchen and living room are located on the same level were you walk out to the decks, grill and beach.
