Sauveterre de Bearn: Just 5 minutes drive by car to this lovely mediaeval town.
Built originally as a walled refuge (sauveté hence Sauveterre) from the turbulent times of the Dark Ages, Sauveterre grew in importance as its old bridge was on one of the main routes to Spain, used by pilgrims on the way to Santiago del Compostella, and others. In the Middle Ages it was to keep a watch from its lofty heights on Navarre and Gascony. There are restaurants in Sauveterre town and in the villages close by. Details are in the ‘house guide’. There are two supermarkets and petrol just 5 minutes from Veronique on the outskirts of Sauveterre.
Salies de Bearn is a small spa town where the hot mineral waters are noted for being seven times more salty than the sea. These can be enjoyed at the town's central baths. It is known as the Venice of the Béarn because of the way the houses overhang the river on stilts, an unusual architectural feature which singles out the town.
