At home on the Eastern Shore.

  • 5 of 5
We look for intimate connections to the places we visit. When we visited Edinburgh, my wife found one of the oldest lodging houses in Scotland and within a day we had a handle on what we could expect in Edinburgh, Scotland & beyond.

The fact is that while most vacation homes we've rented are nice and comfy, most miss the opportunity to offer the local intimate connection to the area. You can typically replace one experience with another interchangeably, though the properties may be in completely different regions.

Not here. Cat, the proprietor is a local who knows the shore and it shows. First off, she is AMAZINg! She gave us detailed insider's information on where to visit all over the Eastern Shore. Ginger's was our favorite. Secondly, the home is awesome! It is well prepared for visitors like myself who prefer feeling comfortably at home with TONS of room (indoor & out) to the small modern hotel room. We cooked the whole time both inside in the fully outfitted kitchen & on the grill. We enjoyed eating on the private back porch ad well as at the table. I found myself napping often on one of the large comfiest sofas. Again w felt at home. Thirdly, the price. I'm still in shock at how inexpensive this awesome find is. We didn't expect a lot for the bargain being offered. The fact is that we've found a vacation spot that goes to the top of our list. I considered not telling you about this amazing find because we'd love to keep it as our own secret, but that just wouldn't be right.

If you're like us, you prefer the genuine item with it's quirky character over fluffy stays in homogenous hotels. This is the place for you and Cat is the proprietor for you. Happy travels.

Great time at Cat House

  • 5 of 5
When planning vacation we were looking for a place that was not so commercialized and a place for the kids to get away from xboxes, iPads and iPhones. Cape Charles fulfilled our needs. Cat House provided us with the comfort of home in its space for a large family, it's charm that you could feel the history when life was much more simple then it is today. The kids heard church bells and chimes for the first time, were able to ride bikes freely in the town and to the beach, went horseback riding for the first time and truly enjoyed all that we did. Cat House took me back to my childhood and how I was raised. It gives you great appreciation for all you have and how blessed we are. My family will certainly be returning to Cat House (I would call Serinity). Catherine the owner is great and so helpful with everything. Family memories were made here and will be special for a long time.

Big comfortable home in beach town

  • 5 of 5
Strongly disagree with the previous negative reviews. My wife and I went to Cape Charles over Memorial Day 2014 weekend for a wedding. We stayed at "The Cat House" with three other friends, and had a very pleasurable experience. The house is huge and has four bedrooms that each have multiple beds in them. There were five of us total so everyone had their own room and we could have easily had several other people staying there comfortably. The owner, Cat, was friendly and helpful from the first contact. She actually completed renovations on the downstairs bathroom right before we arrived, so there were 2 full bathrooms for everyone to use. The screened in back deck and backyard with a horseshoe pit was my favorite part. The kitchen is large and furnished with dishes and a dishwasher. We cooked several meals for the group. The two large living rooms have multiple couches and chairs, which again could have comfortably held more than the 5 of us. Even with only 5 people the price for 3 nights was quite resonable. Cape Charles is a hidden gem of a beach town. Great shopping, art galleries, ice cream shop, restuarants, and a clean beach all within walking distance of the Cat House. If you are staying in Cape Charles, the Cat House is located right in the center of town on the main strip. We also brought a dog along which was no problem at all. The fenced in back-yard had ample room for her to run around. The house is big and older, but still nice. The shower in the renovated bathroom downstairs was huge, had a bench, and had awesome water pressure. We enjoyed Cape Charles very much and actually made some friends there. We plan to visit with a group later in the summer and will most definitely rent the Cat House if available.

Disgusting Place to Stay

  • 1 of 5
Pictures are deceiving and I can guarantee they were staged for the posting only.

There was no screened in porch and the patio cover was filthy, moldy, sagging and filled with water which was a breeding ground for mosquitos. We took the broom to push the water out of the sagging corners and it only filled up again making it impossible to sit in the back yard. The furniture in the house was dirty, broken, torn and old. The house was dirty and in disrepair. The kitchen was a mess, the only lighting was a old chandelier that had Christmas bulbs for lighting and the only other light in the kitchen was a cord hanging from the ceiling with nothing but a light bulb. The dishwasher was filthy and moldy along with the kitchen curtain that hung from the door that led out to the patio. The pantry was so nasty that we would not put the food that we purchased on the shelves. The entire place was filled with ants (upstairs & downstairs) and you could not leave anything on for any length of time because they would take over whatever that was left out. The pots and pans were so rusted, several of them had holes in the bottom. We had to go to the store to buy a couple of pots and pans. We were told that the place had fully furnished kitchen. We ended up using paper plates and plastic cups. Only 3 burners worked on the stove and the only saving grace was that the oven worked. We spent 2 days actually cleaning before we could enjoy ourselves. There were cracks in the upstairs bedrooms and the so called beds consisted of a dirty box spring and a mattress with a door for a headboard and one fell off. The linen was so soiled that we had to take it off the beds to wash it before we even slept in the bed, even after we washed the linen they were still stained and we used quite a bit of bleach. The towels were so stained that we couldn't even use them. We finally gave up and just went to Wal-Mart and not only purchased pots and pans we purchased linen also. We were told there would be internet and low and behold, there wasn't any. The furniture was dirty, broken, torn and stunk.

The owner would not return my niece's calls and had the nerve to come by the house and some wilted vegetables on the porch as a peace offering and sent her assistant over to handle the mess. She had to call in a plumber because the downstairs toilet wasn't working and the entire week we were there, we had to use the toilet without a cover and put our hands in it to flush it fully.

Less than stellar

  • 2 of 5
This house was pretty much as described as far as number of rooms and beds, a.c. units, showers, furniture, etc. However, I found the condition of the house to be rundown and no sign of pride of ownership. The cable wires ran all over the floors in all the rooms. In the living room there is a wire sticking out of the floor (under a chair) that was not live but why leave a wire just sticking out of the floor? The overhead fan in the LR did not work. One of the AC units in the bedroom is melted. The fridge was not level and the oven worked but just looked beat up. The outside shower is rickety and looks like an afterthought. The ceiling is falling down in the kitchen and you can see it was just painted over--the root problem not addressed. The back porch "screenhouse" is full of holes and therefore does not really keep the bugs out. I paid extra to get the internet key but never received any information on it and never had internet access the whole week (except on my smartphone), which was a problem since it rained a few days and we would have liked to use Netflix for something to do. Even after emailing the owner during the week I got no response. She never left a phone # to contact in case of emergency. The cable package is very basic and didn't leave many options for viewing.

As for the town, Cape Charles is a quiet little place with only a few restaurants and bars and most everything is locked up tight by 8 p.m. We enjoyed the ability to bike everywhere and the people were friendly but there just wasn't enough to do, especially with a 2-year-old in the rain. I would not recommend this house for families with young children as I found all the wires to be dangerous and the stairs are pretty steep. We loved the Shanty and had a great meal there. Another favorite was Kelly's Gingernut Pub. The beach was nice, clean, and not very crowded. The water, however, is barely waist deep even at high tide. The fishing pier was nice, too, since you didn't need a license!

All in all we had an okay time but for the first time in years we didn't dread the end of vacation but were looking forward to getting home.

Owner's Response: Dear Homeaway,

1. Just reviewed the home away site and the my phone # is listed.
.
2. The budget vacation home (as advertised) does have a few war wounds. 2 shelves in the fridge have been repaired. BUT SHE NEVER MENTIONED- it works great and makes a ton of ice for her super large party

3. In regards to the a/c unit that blows cold and is very quite has a little melt in the corner where someone ran the heat and air at the same time.

4. The kitchen ceiling is a little uneven and has been that way for the 11 plus years I have owned the house.

5. What Susan failed to mention is that she had a party of 8. Consisting of 7 adults and 1 child. THIS IS $17 A NIGHT A PERSON.
The house is exactly what i described. "Farm House", "Fisherman's getaway", "Budget Vacation for large group".

6. Hope Susan and her 6 other adults and 1 child find a large budget vacation with restaurants open til 10 pm, movie theaters, no rain and deep water swimming next year.
