Looking for the perfect weekend retreat less than an hour from Denver, but surrounded by the great outdoors? Our stream-side home at St. Mary's Glacier has it all.
Romance? The sound of the creek just yards away fills the home from almost every window; the great room with a vaulted paneled ceiling and windows filling the entire southern wall with a view of the stream below and Mt. Evans in the distance; a fireplace nestled in a stone hearth; and warm touches everywhere - knit throws to wrap up in, soft lighting, natural hickory floors, paneled ceilings in every room, and windows that open up your view to the great outdoors.
Nature? Stroll through our five acres with our guidebooks and identify the flora and fauna, or gather your own kindling for that evening's fire. Our property goes north to the road that borders Lake Quivera - a perfect early morning stroll to catch the sunrise while waiting for your coffee to brew. From our deck (and sometimes, ON our deck) I've seen moose, deer, coyote, fox, bear, beaver, muskrat as well as 48 different species of birds. We keep food in stock for the feeders so you'll have a chance to view them too.
Outdoor adventure? We'll show you the nearby hiking trails; we've got two pairs of snowshoes, hiking sticks and that extra pair of thick gloves. We'll show you where you can find the scree and timber brought down by an avalanche; where flocks of bluebirds return every March just as the pasque flowers begin to bloom. And challenge you to find the small unmarked gravesite up on Yankee Hill.
A retreat for the mind and heart? We have unusual books on almost every subject - find an old favorite or make a new discovery. We have a computerized telescope - take it down to our 'star field' and navigate your way around the incredible mountain sky far away from city lights and pollution.
And finally, we've tried to think of the things that will make your visit perfect...there's a large propane grill on the upper level deck; the TV is in it's own room on the entry level so the sports fanatics don't intrude on those upstairs contemplating nature. Lots of room for privacy, with the TV room, bedroom and bath on entry level; the great room, 2nd bedroom, 2nd bath, kitchen and dining area on the middle level, and the loft above it all (perfect place for the kids to camp in the evening). We've stocked the kitchen with all the usual things and then some, and the usual first aid items are also complemented with icy hot patches and insect repellent.
We'll have lots of brochures on hand - to help you find the perfect place to go antiquing or dining or where to explore the unique recreation that the local towns provide, as well as a large map of the St. Mary's area. And lots of firewood stockpiled for the evenings. Remember - St. Mary's - it's more than just the glacier!

My husband John and I retired in 2009, leaving us more time to spend training our dogs (German Shorthaired Pointers), more time for gardening, and more time to kick back at our home up at St. Mary's. Add three wonderful young grandkids to the mix, and we are busy folks indeed! In our book collection at the mountain house, you'll see what eclectic interests we have...Zen, nature, all things political (well, that's John's interest anyway), writing, memoirs and biographies, interior design and decorating, and cooking (again, that's John's baliwick). John is a sports fanatic and my counterpoint to his TV watching is to gaze for hours out the windows, tuning in to the magical life of the forest and the creatures that inhabit it. And it is now my personal passion to enable you to reconnect with whatever is important to you - a budding photography or writing career, the beauty of nature, the challenge of being physically fit, or reconnecting/connecting with that special person in your life. Join us at Saudade for a renewal of the spirit...
The Owner purchased this cabin in 1998
Our busy lives in Boulder cried out for a retreat that we could access within an hour's drive, yet a place where we could truly feel 'away from it all'. Having spent summers with my grandparents on a lake in south Jersey, being close to water was a must. For with water, comes wildlife, and that sense of peace that lets the soul be nurtured by Wallace Stegner's 'all the little live things'...
Whether you are in the mood for the adventurous two hour hike around the back bowl of St. Mary's Glacier, or a stroll on the acres around the house taking nature photographs, there is something here for every mood. Each June we stock the trout pond just beyond the bedroom window. A year round underground spring bubbles to the surface on the hillside below the house; explore where the beaver dam has eroded and now native grasses are re-established along the stream bed. And on a windy night, the outdoor lights illuminate the Engleman Spruce swaying just beyond the deck, creating the illusion of a ship plowing through ocean waves. Lie in bed at night listening to the sound of rushing water, heard year round until the banks of snow completely cover the stream bed...and then the sound is replaced by the winter winds high in the treetops. Open up your senses and feel your spirit soar...
As we begin booking for the 2014 Summer season, wanted to post this review from one of this summer's honeymoon couples, taken from our guest book up at the cabin: "We cannot thank you enough for an amazing honeymoon. The cabin felt like the perfect sanctuary, we felt like were were completely secluded from everyone and thoroughly enjoyed all the beautiful surroundings. We loved just sitting outside on the deck and reading books together - it was so peaceful with the sound of the creek. Birdwatchng had to be one of our favorite things, especially watching the hummingbirds. And it was also nice to be so close to Idaho Springs. There were many great restauants we ate at this week. Thank you for extending your home to us! We would love to come back again!"
We were looking for a place large enough for our family of five (with all teenagers), and this was the perfect place. Spacious enough to give everyone their own personal space, but cozy enough for us to bond as a family. The fireplace is great, and we did use it, even though it was June! The deck is an excellent place to be first thing in the morning with coffee to watch local wildlife. Even though you can't see them very well, there are other cabins close by, which gave us peace of mind in case of emergency. We walked to a couple fishing locations, and hiked to the glacier . . . beautiful! Close to Golden for access to shops and street festivals. We took a drive up to Strawberry Point Hot Springs, which was a little far, but beautiful country - this hot springs experience is a MUST if you are visiting the area! We also went up to Estes Park for some horseback riding - another beautiful drive, especially through the canyon on Hwy. 36. A trip to Boulder was not far either where my husband and son climbed the Flatirons and we enjoyed drinks and lunch at Chautauqua Park. We even hit a local garage sale and picked up some FREE skis! The trip up and down the mountain to the cabin was truly a switchback-experience, but we got used to it after a day or two. CJ was a great hostess and made sure we had everything we needed. We found a lovely set of note cards upon our arrival along with a stocked fireplace and complete instructions on daily housekeeping - kitchen supplies, recycling, bird-feeding, laundry, etc. Binders filled with information about local trails and stories of wildlife sightings gave us a feel for what to expect during our stay. She was also extremely gracious when we neglected to realize that we were to check out on Saturday instead of Sunday. I was SO embarrassed, and we were not ready to go (physically or mentally), but she was completely understanding and helpful as she came to help us get squared away so she could prepare the cabin for the next guests. All in all we had a tremendous experience during our stay there and highly recommend it for families, couples, humans (and dogs - did I mention we took our dog? (She was worn out at the end of every day!) of all ages. Experience Colorado through St. Mary's Glacier while making this cozy cabin your temporary home!
We were lucky to spend a vacation week in this beautiful cabin in St. Mary’s Glacier, CO. You immediately feel at home when you walk into this lovely cabin in the woods. We were greeted by a friendly welcoming note from the owners, CJ and John, along with a nice bottle of wine to enjoy as we started to unwind. CJ makes sure the cabin is stocked with all you need for your stay—including a well-stocked kitchen and fireplaces with plenty of wood and kindling to warm the rooms throughout your visit. There are helpful lists of where to find everything in the cabin, maps for nearby hikes, stargazing equipment and guides and great ideas for favorite stores and restaurants nearby. The cabin is filled with comfortable chairs and throws—perfect for curling up and reading or simply watching the wildlife and beauty outside. We had fun feeding the birds and chipmunks, squirrels and other critters throughout the week! CJ keeps a good supply of birdseed, fox food and trout food which we enjoyed putting out each day. Our dog had a ball watching for his new critter friends and chasing them back and forth on the deck that overlooks the Mt. Evans, beautiful pine trees and flowing stream. The master bed was very comfortable with soft linens and cozy duvet for cool mountain nights. There is lots of closet and drawer space and the master bath has a wonderful Jacuzzi tub that was perfect after a day of hiking the nearby trails. CJ and John have a huge collection of books, games, videos and puzzles to enjoy during your stay, as well as TV and radio/CD player. They have really gone the distance in making sure you have a wonderful, relaxing visit at Saudade. I’ve been back home for a few days now and still miss my comfy chair by the stone fireplace in the cabin. The cabin just has a sense of well-being and tranquility that really helped me unwind. We had a wonderful time and highly recommend staying in this special cabin in St. Mary’s Glacier, CO. Thanks again CJ for your friendly and kind spirit, all the helpful tips and allowing us to stay in your special home.
We hope to visit again! Heather, Mike and Murphy
What a beautiful cabin in an amazing location with a wonderful owner. The master bed was comfortable and had many closets for your clothes. The bathroom and shower were very nice and clean and well stocked with towels, etc. The cabin is so homey and comfortable, you could really pretend it was yours. The fireplace worked well and heated the living room nicely. The kitchen was very well stocked and perfectly large enough for us to work in. The owner has taken so much care into making sure you have all that you need and more. The maps for all the hikes were so helpful, the lists of kitchen amenities, where things were in the house and directions to the cabin were perfect, really above and beyond what some vrbo owners will offer you.
The wildlife was so great to watch. We watched the birds eat from the bird feeders and watched a fox through the window as she munched on leftover bird seed. They came through around 6:30pm each night on the dot.
This cabin was great for the two of us and our dog. The bedroom downstairs had it's own bathroom as well, plus a loft upstairs. You could certainly fit 2 couples here with a kid or two.
Romping around in 4ft of snow was the coolest! The dog had the time of his life. St Mary's Glacier is a hidden gem that I'm really glad we were exposed to.
Thanks again CJ for the wonderful visit.
First off CJ was the best help with all my questions. They have a great place to stay. With great hikes in the area. Fishing all over the place. And all the items one would need to stay. We will be going back for sure!
This was the most perfect home away from home, the most relaxing oasis, a true diamond in the rough! I am so thankful to CJ, our most gracious hostess, for sharing her lovely mountain cabin. Words cannot describe the peace, tranquility, and warmth that surround you from the moment you arrive.
My friend and I flew in from Buffalo NY to spend a couple days with my daughter and my friend I haven't seen in more than twenty years. Upon arriving, the sun was shining and we were in t-shirts as we unloaded our belongings with excitement. The home was exquisite, surpassing all our imaginations. CJ placed a binder full of "how to's" describing things to know about the house, where to find things, and a warm welcome to enjoy our stay as if it were our home. As we "poked around" we discovered a fully stocked kitchen; spices, condiments, and every utensil and gadget known to man! Upon further investigation, we not only found books, games, and music galore, but we also found blankets, snowshoes, and lots of bird feed and fox food. It was delightful feeding the birds and it was thrilling to discover the fox knew when dinner time was! We lit the fire CJ had ready to go and spent the evening preparing a gourmet meal, enjoying the wine CJ left as a welcome, and looking forward to the next couple of days.
We woke up to a familiar sight, a blizzard! Snowing, blowing, just like back home. No worries, the girls went snowshoeing, I soaked in the jet tub and did a facial, then we put a puzzle together. Seems silly to spend hours putting a puzzle together but it was such a riot! It was the finest bonding we ever could have imagined! With all the ambiance of the cozy cabin, the countless amenities of entertainment, and the time we were all sharing, we discovered the weather had little impact on our very special time together.
We look forward to coming back again to enjoy the hikes and all the outdoor activities. Although the snow was not factored into our plans, we all had a spectacular time! We experienced the true meaning of "Saudade", and we will always treasure "nostalgia for that which may never have been".
Despite the delay in writing up this review, our visit is still fresh in mind – we had such an amazing time and the cabin was everything we could have hoped for –
We lucked out with the weather – there was plenty of snow, but the crews did a phenomenal job keeping the roads exceptionally clear and easy to drive. I'm very glad we opted to rent a 4WD SUV for the trip as I'm pretty sure neither of our vehicles would have been able to handle it, but if you aren't going in the winter, the roads are paved and easy for just about any vehicle you might have.
Arriving at the cabin, it had everything we could have possibly needed, some things we never would have imagined we needed, and lots of help along the way. The owner has an amazingly detailed breakdown of what's where, favorite hikes, and overviews that we felt like we were right at home. And it is remarkably pet friendly – which was a must for us!
Our beagle had such fun squirrel watching and bird watching – which was made even easier by the wildlife treats and seed that was stocked at the cabin to keep all the critters coming back. My personal favorite were the foxes – just grab the fox food, leave it out and stand still – they come in no time! We got some fantastic pictures -
We can't wait to come back in warmer weather (early March is still quite snowy!) and see how gorgeous the views are in those conditions – the winter wonderland that we experienced was magical.
This is a fantastic getaway for couples, but the place is big enough and nicely laid out to accommodate a larger bunch. It's fantastic for just being lazy and lounging or being active and exploring –
We would absolutely recommend this place (and have!) as a fantastic getaway – thanks so much!
