Photos and Description of the Idaho Springs vacation cabin rental
Cabin, 2 Bedrooms + Loft + Den, 2 Baths, (Sleeps 4-8)

Looking for the perfect weekend retreat less than an hour from Denver, but surrounded by the great outdoors? Our stream-side home at St. Mary's Glacier has it all. Romance? The sound of the creek just yards away fills the home from almost every window; the great room with a vaulted paneled ceiling and windows filling the entire southern wall with a view of the stream below and Mt. Evans in the distance; a fireplace nestled in a stone hearth; and warm touches everywhere - knit throws to wrap up in, soft lighting, natural hickory floors, paneled ceilings in every room, and windows that open up your view to the great outdoors. Nature? Stroll through our five acres with our guidebooks and identify the flora and fauna, or gather your own kindling for that evening's fire. Our property goes north to the road that borders Lake Quivera - a perfect early morning stroll to catch the sunrise while waiting for your coffee to brew. From our deck (and sometimes, ON our deck) I've seen deer, coyote, fox, bear, beaver, the resident St. Mary's moose, muskrat as well as 48 different species of birds. We keep food in stock for the feeders so you'll have a chance to view them too. Outdoor adventure? We'll show you the nearby hiking trails; we've got two pairs of snowshoes, hiking sticks and that extra pair of thick gloves. We'll show you where you can find the scree and timber brought down by an avalanche; where flocks of bluebirds return every March just as the pasque flowers begin to bloom. And challenge you to find the small unmarked gravesite up on Yankee Hill. A retreat for the mind and heart? We have unusual books on almost every subject - find an old favorite or make a new discovery. We have a computerized telescope - take it down to our 'star field' and navigate your way around the incredible mountain sky far away from city lights and pollution. And finally, we've tried to think of the things that will make your visit perfect...there's a large propane grill on the upper level deck; the TV is in it's own room on the entry level so the sports fanatics don't intrude on those upstairs contemplating nature. Lots of room for privacy, with the TV room, bedroom and bath on entry level; the great room, 2nd bedroom, 2nd bath, kitchen and dining area on the middle level, and the loft above it all (perfect place for the kids to camp in the evening). We've stocked the kitchen with all the usual things and then some, and the usual first aid items are also complemented with icy hot patches and insect repellent.

We'll have lots of brochures on hand - to help you find the perfect place to go antiquing or dining or where to explore the unique recreation that the local towns provide, as well as a large map of the St. Mary's area. And lots of firewood stockpiled for the evenings. Remember - St. Mary's - it's more than just the glacier!

^Just 15 minutes from Idaho Springs (restaurants, Safeway & liquor store, white water rafting, gold mine tours, antiquing)

About The Owner

My husband John and I retired in 2009, leaving us more time to spend training our dogs (German Shorthaired Pointers), more time for gardening, and more time to kick back at our home up at St. Mary's. Add two wonderful young grandkids to the mix, and we are busy folks indeed! In our book collection at the mountain house, you'll see what eclectic interests we have...Zen, nature, all things political (well, that's John's interest anyway), writing, memoirs and biographies, interior design and decorating, and cooking (again, that's John's baliwick). John is a sports fanatic and my counterpoint to his TV watching is to gaze for hours out the windows, tuning in to the magical life of the forest and the creatures that inhabit it. And it is now my personal passion to enable you to reconnect with whatever is important to you - a budding photography or writing career, the beauty of nature, the challenge of being physically fit, or reconnecting/connecting with that special person in your life. Join us at Saudade for a renewal of the spirit...

The Owner purchased this cabin in 1998
Why The Owner chose Idaho Springs

Our busy lives in Boulder cried out for a retreat that we could access within an hour's drive, yet a place where we could truly feel 'away from it all'. Having spent summers with my grandparents on a lake in south Jersey, being close to water was a must. For with water, comes wildlife, and that sense of peace that lets the soul be nurtured by Wallace Stegner's 'all the little live things'...

What makes this cabin unique

Whether you are in the mood for the adventurous two hour hike around the back bowl of St. Mary's Glacier, or a stroll on the acres around the house taking nature photographs, there is something here for every mood. Each June we stock the trout pond just beyond the bedroom window. A year round underground spring bubbles to the surface on the hillside below the house; explore where the beaver dam has eroded and now native grasses are re-established along the stream bed. And on a windy night, the outdoor lights illuminate the Engleman Spruce swaying just beyond the deck, creating the illusion of a ship plowing through ocean waves. Lie in bed at night listening to the sound of rushing water, heard year round until the banks of snow completely cover the stream bed...and then the sound is replaced by the winter winds high in the treetops. Open up your senses and feel your spirit soar...

Beautiful Cabin and Great Getaway!

5 of 5
Submitted: May 6, 2013 Stayed: April 2013
We had never been to Colorado or stayed in a cabin before, and this home exceeded our expectations by far. The cabin is large and beautiful, but with a personal touch. We had four adults and a black lab and had plenty of space. I loved the way the cabin was decorated and all the little extras to make our stay enjoyable! We used the walking sticks and snow shoes to hike in the snow, and the pan to look for gold in the stream. We especially enjoyed the wildlife - the birds were amazing to watch and we loved seeing the neighborhood fox each morning! Nearby Idaho Springs is an adorable town with several great restaurants - We enjoyed Tommyknocker's, Main Street and Azteca. Overall this was just the perfect place to stay and we really appreciate CJ and John for sharing their wonderful home with us!

Our Spring Snowy Vacation

5 of 5
Submitted: May 4, 2013 Stayed: April 2013
The Cabin was absolutely amazing.

My wife and I have stayed in a few homes in the past for our vacations,, mostly beach bound. and all were great. None however could ever match how personable your home was. It was an absolute treat for us to enjoy the wildlife, and hike up the mountains.

We did the hike up to the glacier. We made it to the lake but not much further. The lake was of course frozen over, and the wind was pretty cold once we got there. It was easy to see how un prepared we really were for such and undertaking. It was crazy to see the difference 30 minutes makes as after our glacier hike we headed to Red Rocks. Holy Sweat!.

On Sunday we hiked up Yankee hill. Delightful and scenic once we got up to the top. We got to check out the tops of the old mining cabins that were there as there was still plenty of snow left over.
SO much to see and do, and again, the personality of the cabin was over the top! The maps and directions were better than useful.

The provided necessities for the hikes, the birds, the animals!! Did I mention the animals?!?! My wife and I are amateur photographers, and the plethora of wildlife kept us very busy in trying to get that perfect shot! The foxes stopped by every morning!

This was definitely a memorable trip. Thank you again for opening your home to us.

Even Better The Second Time!

5 of 5
Submitted: March 30, 2013 Stayed: March 2013
This was my second time at Saudade and it proved to be the perfect spot for a family vacation. Snow-shoeing, hiking, bird watching, dog walking, a day trip to the Downtown Aquarium in Denver, fantastic pizza at BeauJo's in close-by Idaho Springs, candy and ice cream made on-site in Georgetown, brews and great food at Tommy Knockers (Idaho Springs), a convenient Safeway Grocery store (Idaho Springs), dirts streets and old railroad cars (just like the old west) in Silver Plume, art galleries, pottery stores, handmade soaps, shampoos and lotions at the Soap Shoppe, lots of snow everywhere in St. Mary's while it was 70 degrees in Denver, long walks by local lakes, friendly folks everywhere--these are just a few of the things we did during our week at Saudade. The home itself has everything a family needs to enjoy spread out and rest up: well-appointed kitchen, comfy beds, chairs, etc., gorgeous fireplace, a deck where birds of all kinds gather, 5 acres to roam, books and books and music, TV/DVD/VCR and plenty of movies, and a "welcome home" atmosphere that cannot be beat! Owners John and CJ are so very helpful and always accessible. If you and your family are looking for the perfect place to vacation, look no further.

Winter Wonderful !

Being a south Texas girl, she had never spent any "living" time in a snow and cold environment.
She had briefly seen snow at ski areas and while traveling, but never any day after day real life experience.
The question arose."why would anybody ever live in weather like that?"
I went to VRBO, found this house and said, "let's find out!"
After the first week, she is sincerely looking for a house just like this, in the same area, to BUY!
As you can see from the pictures, the house is well decorated and outfitted to be a comfortable place, but what you can't see, is the special feeling you get while you are in it.
The place is a sanctuary for dozens of bird species, foxes, Chickarees, and more. Most importantly it was a sanctuary for us; within 24 hours of our arrival.
The gracious owners supply the feed for the friends of the forest, and we had a never ending joyful time, feeding, watching, laughing at these special constant visitors.
We were hoping to have some fresh snow, even brought plenty of groceries, in case we were snowed in for a day or two, and to our good fortune, we were.
What a perfect day: on with the snow shoes, out to the lake, up the hill, and around the area, even got to see a real "white out", and more snow than she had ever seen in all her life.
The next day the roads were open down the mountain to Idaho Springs, but we decided to stay "at home", and go up to the glacier. Make it 2 days in a row that we have the most wonderful of memories; memories we have re enjoyed dozens of times since we came back from this very special place.
And that was the way it went for our whole experience, drove up to the 15 foot snows on Loveland pass, twice to Breckenridge, to eat late lunch at Giampietros, creative little restaurant.
Last 3 days our 21 year old daughter and her boyfriend, after hearing so much from us, came from Texas, to be part of the joy.
And just like us, they found it!
The owners have created this place to suit themselves and others who appreciate the meaning of words like:
cozy, nature, warm, loving, beauty, gentle adventure, contentment.
We have had many satisfying experiences exploring life, none that surpass this.

Owner's Response: Dear Carl and Laurie - It was great to meet you, and thrilled you had the Rocky Mountain adventure you were hoping for. And thanks ever so much for sending the photos - the one of the chickaree and the Crossbill are especially terrific and will find their way onto my blog very soon. You are truly a gifted photographer, and you have definitely inspired me to go camera shopping and hone my skills!
