This unique paradise retreat for 2 is located in Vacationland on the Hilo side of the Big Island. Located only a few minutes’ walk to the Wai Opae tide pools, this romantic property features a private pond with its own 10 foot high waterfall. The average lot in Vacationland is a little over 8000sq ft. but this property is on 3 lots and backs up to 300 acres of undeveloped land offering a peaceful, quiet and private surroundings. Set in a secluded tropical garden setting you may pick apple bananas, mangoes, papaya and coconuts when in season.
This pristine and charming house has been decorated with vintage Hawaiian pieces that have been collected over many years. The house has a complete kitchen that was remodeled in 2011. There is a full bathroom upstairs and an outdoor shower downstairs. The studio opens on to a private lanai that was newly redecorated earlier this year. There is satellite TV and a phone for on island calls. This is a 2 story house but the downstairs is used for storage and is not connected with the upstairs.
This area has many beautiful warm ponds. Depending on the tides the water level will vary in all of these ponds including the pond on the property. There is a very large warm public pond at Ahalanui Park approximately 1 mile down the Red Road (HWY 137) that you can swim in at all tide levels.
This is a Hawaiin home away from home! Tranquil, lush, with incredible decor inside and out . We spent our mornings having coffee and breakfast on the lanai, feeding the geckos fruit from our hands. After a long day out we would come back and enjoy a nice glass of wine or beer. Extremely peaceful property, you can hear the ocean and birds all the time. The landscaping is gorgeous and impeccable and the tide pool is large, warm and clean with a lounging area. Mitzi's is next door and will provide anything you need..... But you won't! This neighborhood is charming and next to the tide pools. Wifi is provided , DVDs and even a few hawaiin CDs with a CD player. All we can say is don't hesitate "book it!"
This house was absolutely perfect and well beyond our expectations.
We've stayed in various places on the Big Island and on Kauai, from hotels to condos, from motels to private houses, and this was by far the very best experience we've had. Probably the best I've ever had.
The decoration, beach house architecture, the lighting, big lanai created a very welcoming and cozy feeling. Everything is clean and perfectly kept, the kitchen is well equipped, there is a washer-dryer downstairs, both the indoors and outdoors showers are great, and Mitzi and Gail made sure we had all we needed: bath and beach towels, shampoo, soap, dish washing liquid laundry detergent, even coffee and sweets to welcome us, and... snorkeling sets! Swimming in the pond is absolutely fantastic, and snorkeling in the nearby tide pools rivals the Great Barrier Reef, with sea turtles and hundreds of fishes big and small.
Our only regret was to have to leave this paradise!
Thank you, Gail and Mitzi!

Nice people, nice place. Nearby snorkeling in lava pools was amazing, like swimming in a heated aquarium with exotic fish. Mitzi the masseuse/manager was wonderful! Did I mention that she gives massages?...Only 2 deficiencies: desperately needs a knife sharpener (which I will donate) and a propane BBQ!! Gail is a very nice lady, but she must be a vegetarian:please get a propane BBQ, as the fish here are too good to not eat. Many thanks to Gail and Mitzi for enduring my scheduling mistakes: I was tired. Sorry.
I highly recommend the waterfall cottage to you.

This property was far more impressive than the photos show! So beautiful and peaceful (other than the frogs and pouring rain at night - but that's just nature!) It was nice to explore "the other side" of the island and be in this unique property. Loved the outdoor shower, and the pond and waterfall were so romantic! Our first night there, we looked out the bedroom window to see a wild boar and it's baby foraging on the grass! I loved feeling like we were in the true tropics with all the fruit trees too. Super quick walk to the tidepools, which you absolutely must see at both low and high tides to appreciate! The property manager next door was also very nice and friendly, but not intrusive at all. Very nice stay, thank you!
This house is unique! Loved the floor plan, huge deck, SOOO comfortable bed, outdoor shower, private tidepool, etc.. Well decorated and nicely landscaped property with all the amenities of home. The tidepool just around the corner was the best one we visited during our 2 week stay on the island. Close to Pahoa Town where we enjoyed Ning's Thai food and Kaleo's Bar and Grill - amazing! Highly recommend this place! This is a private oasis on the island with banana, papaya and coconut trees and pineapple plants in the yard. The perfect place to spend part of our trip during our 10-year anniversary trip! ~Dave and Stacy (Arizona)
The pictures don't do it justice! It is way better! The inside of the house is neat and tidy, with new decorations and nice furniture. The bed is super comfy! We enjoyed our meals out on the deck even when it was raining. It was just a 5 minute leisurely walk to the tidepools. The tide pools were so fun with lots of cool fish. We wish we stayed longer here. Not too far from Hilo- 45 mins or so. A nice launching spot and a bit of paradise indeed! We would LOVE to come back. I've already been recommending this place to my friends if they ever go to the big island!
