Stephen and Sabine are artists and designers who recently moved to Napa in 2008, after having lived in Manhattan for 27 years. They are both widely traveled and fluent in German. The main house, which they recently renovated, was featured in California Home & Design magazine. They enjoy entertaining and discovering the unique pleasures of the Napa Valley.
Stephen Whisler purchased this apartment in 2008
Sabine and Stephen's place is perfect for anyone wanting to explore Napa Valley but enjoy peace and quiet at the end of a hard day's touring. The one-bedroom apartment above the couple's artist studio is well-appointed and most tastefully decorated. We loved the restrained, comfortable furniture and the original artwork, but mostly the beautiful natural light that floods the apartment by day, the quietness of the neighborhood and the superb view over Napa with regular appearances by deer, wild turkeys and squirrels. The apartment is just minutes away by car from the Oxbow Market and downtown Napa - very handy, and close to the Silverado Trail, the valley's second, quieter, more scenic traffic artery running north-south. Lots of wineries are along the Trail, including Joseph Phelps and Stag's Leap. Sabine and Stephen are both extremely friendly and approachable. I couldn't recommend the place more!
We loved this sweet apartment overlooking the woods. Sabine and Stephen were wonderful hosts. Very responsive when we had any questions or needed anything. We both enjoyed making their acquaintance.
The photos really don't do the property justice. The remodel that they did on this guest apartment is perfect for the space and takes advantage of the natural lighting. We woke every morning to deer in the backyard. And the sunset view is gorgeous.
Both Stephen and Sabine are artist so you'll find nice little personal touches throughout the rental. We look forward to our next vacation here!
We could not have asked for a more perfect weekend getaway. The property overlooks the town of Napa. While just a quick ~10 minute drive up from the valley, during the day it feels like a secluded wooded retreat with deer paths winding through the hillside yard. At night, the view transforms with lights from the town below. The modest apartment-over-garage/art studio was equipped with every amenity, all with the minimal, stylish touch of the owners. Hosts Stephen and Sabine made us feel right at home and are just fascinating people with great stories to share.
We plan to find all sorts of excuses to return to here!
We could only squeeze in a 1 night stay on our tour of California and we were bummed about it. The location is awesome - at the top of a pretty long and steep hill that allows for great views of the valley/city but is not too great for jogging up :). The owners had great communication prior to our arrival and were there to greet us but are not all up in your mix. They had people over one night and the property is big enough (dual driveways, separate building etc) that neither party knew the others were there until we talked on our way out the next day. We bought a candle in town and chilled on the patio overlooking the sunset with a bottle we had bought at Silverado Winery (also great views). The sun seemed to beam light for an unusually long time after passing below the horizon - no idea why but no complaining! Had a blast. Worth every penny!
This modern guesthouse in the hills overlooking downtown Napa was the perfect spot for my wife's and my week-long stay in wine country in May. The guesthouse is only a short, 5-minute drive from downtown Napa; it affords amazing views of the valley, especially at sunset; and it was clean and well-maintained with contemporary furnishings, including some of the hosts' own artwork. The location is ideal for exploring wineries in Napa or Sonoma and is only a short 20-25 minute drive to Yountville's fine dining scene.
Taking the hosts' advice--and they have plenty of recommendations for the area--we stopped at the nearby Oxbow Market for cheese and the Fatted Calf for local charcuterie, which we enjoyed on the guesthouse terrace with a bottle of wine we'd bought that day from a local winery. In downtown Napa, we also recommend: Napa Coffee Roasters, for the freshest-roasted coffee in town, Oenotri, for fine Italian fare, including a sometimes necessary break from California wines; Pizzeria Azzurro, for great pizza; and the Kitchen Door, for a delicious, low key lunch (or dinner) made from local ingredients. If you're not too hungover from your wine country adventure, you could also take a yoga class at Ubuntu Yoga Studio.
This spot offers easy access to all that Napa has to offer. I highly recommend this listing and would stay here again.
I stayed for two weeks with my new wife on our honeymoon. The hosts are wonderful and very informative. The view is to die for and had us entertained for hours. The apartment was very spacious and offered us privacy on our stay. The area is very quiet and dark in the evenings. Well furnished and decorated it was comfortable to relax in while not wine tasting or sampling the local dining. The kitchen is more than adequate for cooking breakfasts or full dinner meals.
Less than 5 minutes from downtown Napa. Most wineries are with in a 10 - 30 minute drive. I am highly recommending this place to a few of our friends that enjoy wine and need a get away spot for a week or two. Next time we come, we will be staying here again without question.
