Touring, culture and history:
The house is ideally located for touring the historic towns of the Minho region, and meandering round the hillside villages and lanes of the Serra de Arga, and the rugged unspoilt landscape of the Peneda-Gerês National Park is just half an hour away. There’s a wealth of history and culture in Viana do Castelo (the main fishing port in the region), Ponte de Lima (Portugal’s oldest town), Barcelos, Ponte da Barca, and up the coast to Caminha and Vila Nova de Cerveira. There’s markets – every day in one local town or another; and Romarias – folklore fetes and religious processions – every village has one, and many take place during the summer. In Deão there are local feasts around 18th August and the first week in September.
Beaches:
The Costa Verde has beaches every few kilometers, most of them wide and sandy, uncrowded and safe. There’s a great surf beach at Afife, family beaches, romantic beaches, enough variety for somewhere new every day. There are also 'beaches' on the River Lima (the nearest is 2km away) with calm and warm water.
Golf:
Ponte de Lima (15km), part of a 'bucolic scenery of mountains, vineyards and fruit gardens', is a course typical of the Minho region. Par 71, 6005m, including Portugal's longest hole at 622m (par 5).
Estela (50km), built on a 3km stretch of sand dunes on the beautiful Costa Verde, this is one of the Portuguese golf links that secured a high reputation for itself when it hosted two events in the European Professionals' Circuit. Par 72, 6129m.
Quinta da Barca golf resort (35km), an excellent 9 hole course with stunning views over the Cavado River. Par 31, 2012m.
