About Gary Fritz

I am a general contractor, I built The Blue Marlin in 2007 to sell, however, the market left and I spent around 20k furnishing the house with all the finest furniture, new beds, dining room set, sheets, towels, everything one could want in a home. I do not live in this house, only use it as a rental, I have tried to make the house one that I would want to spend time in. I am 66 years old and live in Tallahassee with my three rat terriers.

Gary Fritz purchased this house in 2007

Why Gary Fritz chose Alligator Point

I have been going to this area of the gulf coast since I was a child. The area has changed little, there never has been any real development and when I bought the lot the Blue Marlin is on, I decided to build this house to this floor plan based on everything I have learned as a builder in the past thirty years.I have put all first class components in the house in hopes to sell it and now I am happy it didn't sell, as I enjoy renting it. Everyone has been so great in the past five years, I have met many interesting people who have rented, and have no regrets that the house didn't sell as I first intended it to. I am a firm believer in everything happens for a purpose and The Blue Marlin is an example of life not following my plan but still turning out for the best. When I first started renting the house, I didn't have any idea how it would go, but everyone has loved the house and loved staying there, I even have around seven or eight people that come every year, and it such a blessing and a pleasure to rent the house.

What makes this house unique

The Blue Marlin is first a very private and secluded house, there are things there in the surroundings that haven't changed in thosuands of years, the area has not been developed in any way, you might see five or six people on the beach during the week, maybe a few more on weekdays. The fishing is excellent on the beach, I stay one week per year with my sister and her husband and have a great time every year. There is so much wildlife, you will see deer, white squirrels, maybe a black bear, foxes, dove and quail, turkeys, thousands of sea birds, bats, wildcats, the state park one half mile from the house is five thousand acres with walkways going a long way back into the wilderness. The state park looks like Africa in many ways. There is a nice long dock with all facilities. fi you wiish to just get away from all the rat race, this is the place for you, you will feel like you have gone back in thime with the silence and the waves you hear for the beds when you go to sleep. People are few that are on the beach and I want you to feel like this is your own house for your stay. There are no personal effects that I keep there, I only use this house for a rental. Please come and share the peace and quiet to rejuvenate yourselves from this loud and crazy world.

Guestbook comments from the owner

We had a great time at The Blue Marlin. We walked on the beach, played on the beach, fished on the beach and caught Red Fish, Trout, some sting rays, and even a shark. We had a great day trip to Cape San Blas, Saint Joe, and Saint George Island. Great food was found at the Tropical Trader. It was great to be at the end of the "point". The state park was great for morning runs, bike riding, and walking. The water was calm enough to put in the kayaks and they were used frequently. The house was great and the perfect size for all of us (8 total). Everyone had pleanty of room and the size of the kitchen and dining room was perfect for watching movies and playing games. Thanks for letting us stay, what a great week.

We needed a quiet peaceful place to spend time together celebrating life, and making new memories. The Blue Marlin in Alligator Point was a wonderful getaway for us. Connection with the owner was quite easy, and he seems to be a very delightful person. The property is in a serene area, where we enjoyed viewing dolphins, sand crabs, a bald eagle, and many other types of birds. We walked over to"Bald Point State Park" and found sweet serenity! Also, we especially enjoyed our visit to the "Gulf Specimen Aquarium And Marine Lab"- just a short ride in town, over to Panacea. We spent most of our time on the screened porch and sundecks cooking out, playing board games, reading, and enjoying the quiet solitude that we so very much desired. During this special time together we were celebrating a birthday, an anniversary, and also the life and great memories of our dear son who went to Heaven this time last year (due to a pulmonary embolism). The Blue Marlin was just the right place for us to be together to cherish old memories, and to create new ones. This property is just steps from a nice quiet beach that we enjoyed very much. We cooked most of our meals in the large kitchen, and loved the open dining area, and living room. The four bedrooms, and two baths provided plenty of space and privacy. It was also great to have access to a handy washer and dryer on the premises. We ended up staying around The Blue Marlin almost the entire time, because we found it to be such a calm and serene place for us to spend special time together, in a special place, built by a very special person! Much gratitude for a Lovely time in a Lovely place!!

Eternally Grateful, The Matthews Family

The Blue Marlin went beyond my expectations! The place is huge with a great open living space, comfortable sectional furniture, all of the amenities, lots of parking, four spacious bedrooms, 2 great bathrooms with great showers/tub, two king-size beds, one queen, and two twins. The place sits on the water and coffed on the back covered patio was so serene and peaceful. Found lots of shells and saw hundreds of butterflies! I'll be back for sure! Thanks, Gary!

The previous review (posted July 28, 2014) is very informative, and I fully agree with it - except regarding kitchen utensils: we found the kitchen fully stocked, from utensils to spices. So, there was nothing else we would wish to be added. Same applies to the entire house: it has everything, nothing is missing inside or outside. Good Wi-Fi. There are even a couple of fishing rods (one - with reel, but we did not use them), and a good large crab trap (that we used, and caught a lot of blue crabs). Just don't forget to release all female crabs, please! Crabbing requires FL fishing license. There are beach chairs and some toys, too. The house is excellent: beachfront, spacious, comfortable, designed with taste. All appliances are new.

However, the house is not the main reason that we loved this vacation - it is the nature that makes all the difference! Again, previous review says it all. I will add a few practical tips:

1. Definitely get insect repellent! This is for outside only, as the house has screened porches. There were no bugs during the day, but they start coming later in the evening. No mosquitoes, but some small flies (gnats? no-see-ems?) that low-concentration DEET repels completely. Info correct for end-July.

2. Get water shoes. Many hermit crabs (and other shells) in the water. Also please note that this is not Panama City Beach with its emerald crystal clear water and white sand! Sand on the beach is white and clean all right, but water is more like tea-colored, and sand on the sea bottom may be covered in spots with thin layer of mud. Similar to Jekyll Island beaches, if you know. However, in the Bald Point State Park (20 min walking or 2 min driving East from the house) - the beach is all sand, and water is very clear.

3. Take $1 bills to pay for above mentioned park ($4 per car). Park has several entrances, one is unmarked (the one where you can launch canoe into the Lake, or fish from bridge). See Park website for more info.

4. Nearest "anything" (gas, food, bait, etc.) is is Panacea, about 20-30 min driving. The Marina in Alligator Point is closer (15 min driving), but all they sell is Coke and Bug (no gas for cars, only for boats). Supermarket in Panacea is closing at 8 PM.

5. Water in the Gulf is mostly still, so bring your kayaks and canoes.

Many thanks to Mr. Fritz for a beautiful house!

This is a remarkably wonderful place to vacation––and a great house with a caring landlord to boot. Your front door opens onto the lush North Florida swamp, which puts you in mind of the remotest parts of the Everglades, through which one of us has walked and camped. Only a handful of cars drive by Bald Point Road (at least in April and May), which ends a half-mile north at the state park––essentially just a fishing pier, several nice trails, beach access and air-conditioned bathrooms.

Your screened back porch looks onto a sandy beach with tidal flats and pools and tons of shore birds, sometimes under the watchful eye of a bald eagle. The water’s in a transitional area––always the most interesting in nature—where, to the south lie the upper reaches of the Gulf of Mexico and, to the north, Ocholockonee Bay. (The Ocholockonee River’s headwaters form amid farmland 130 or so meandering miles away in Worth County, Georgia, and the river’s mouth spills into this bay.)

Best of all, you’ve got a tidal creek running alongside two bedrooms (and the neatest walk-in double-headed shower with a view), and that makes all the difference. CAUTION: There’s an alligator in there sometimes; we saw it twice. There’s an abundance of blue crabs and a trap for your use. Snowy egrets feed in the morning, and all sorts of creatures traverse from swamp to creek. Put aside the tide charts and observe that creek; compensating for countervailing winds, you’ll literally see the ebb and flow.

The house is spacious and features a great media wall. The owner pays special attention to your comfort with good screening, which you will come to appreciate. In spring the breeze is almost always present and you’ll easily learn how to compensate for nature when it isn’t. The kitchen is well-stocked, but you may want to pack some extra cutlery and, especially if you are home cooks, some cooking utensils and small utility and serving dishes.

All my long life––we both grew up on Florida barrier islands––I’ve heard about the “mating season” of sea creatures. Here, for the first time, I saw it. For several days, you couldn’t walk 20 yards along the shore without seeing horseshoe crabs, the larger female in front, usually partially buried in the sand, and the male behind and facing her.

We didn’t know Gary before we rented Blue Marlin, but we thank him for building it, keeping it fit, furnishing and supplying it and for being such a responsible, reasonable and pleasant landlord.

Owner's Response: Thank you Ron for your wonderful review. The Blue Marlin is truly a beautiful and zen like place to be. Your review is very flattering of both myself and the house, and for that I am grateful. You have been the perfect guest, the best part of it all is the wonderful experience you had at the Blue Marlin and the memories you and Kathleen take from there will be a part of you for the rest of your life. To have played a small part in someones happy memory makes me feel truly blessed. Also, the Alligator (3 ft.) has been removed and placed in an inland lake. Sincerely, Gary Fritz, Owner of The Blue Marlin.

2 Year Old Had the Time of Her Life

  • 5 of 5

Our 2 year old daughter was anticipating this "beach vacation with grandma and grandpa" for a long, long time. I was so pleased that the trip surpassed her (and all of our) expectations. My wife and I stayed with my folks, and our 2 kids (age 1 and 2), and our 2 wire haired dachshunds at Gary's house on the Ocean. The house was perfect for our "rowdy" bunch. The deck was extremely safe for the little ones, was enclosed in nice, and was in good shape. The kids could just have at it without having to worry. Also, it was buttoned up nicely with screen all the way around (and bottom too) which made it bug-free. The deck and the scenery around it was by far the family's favorite feature of this home. If we weren't down at the beach, or exploring the "quaint" surrounding communities, we were chillin' on the deck enjoying the views and the seabreeze (take your binoculars and telephoto lens). The beach was perfect for the kids and was just outside (in the back yard, basically), so with the "littles" the adults could take shifts with nap times, etc. and still make sure that everyone got a good chance to get their fill of the sun and the beach. We saw lots of dinner-plate sized stingrays, lots and lots of blue crabs, snow-white squirrels, and a host of other interesting creatures while we played in the area. We had the beach almost to ourselves all week, seeing only a few people here and there. The water was warm, and calm, and was perfect for our 2-year old daughter. She was very brave, and was attempting to catch crab, and had no hesitation picking up and playing with hermit crabs, and horshoe crabs. The layout of the house couldn't have been nicer. There is an oversized couch and a large table (my dad beat me about 13 consecutive games of chess during the vacation on that table, unfortunately). There are ceiling fans everywhere, and a cool kitchen. When you are working in the kitchen, you are looking out a wall of windows at the ocean. Wakulla Springs was an awesome day-trip with crystal clear water, and views of gators and other crazy birds and wildlife, and the local aquarium is one of the neatest places I've seen. My 2 year old picked up and played with starfish, crabs, and got to see lots of "Nemos" and seahorses, sharks, and other crazy creatures. This place goes beyond the typical "sand and water" beach area - the area is also a wildlife watcher's and outdoorsman's paradise. We are very grateful we vacationed at the Blue Marlin.
