Photos and Description of the County Cork vacation cottage rental Renovated stone cottage & barn with large garden, pond & pool.

LAHARANDOTA - The Artists' Cottage, an old stone farmhouse recently owned by retired American painter Frank Russell, now fully renovated to include slate floors, old beams and stone walls. Set in over an acre of land and surrounded by fields with extensive views over the sea and the Mizen Head. Ideal for those looking for a relaxing holiday or weekend retreat, for walkers/cyclists or families, with its large garden, spring, pond and small outdoor pool (solar heated). Located 4 miles west of local village Kilcrohane, and a scenic half-hour drive from the busy market town of Bantry with its great restaurants and pubs. Stroll down the lane from the cottage directly on to The Sheep's Head Way, one of Ireland's 31 Waymarked Ways (marked trails). The peninsula's natural wild beauty makes its 55 mile trail stand out from others and offers an exciting challenge for all keen walkers. If, however, you're not a 'wild rover', there's always riding, sailing, kayaking, diving, golf...

Guest Comments: 'It is a fabulous place to stay - we found ourselves spending lots of time just pottering around the cottage because it was so lovely. We will definitely come again and will recommend it to our friends.' Gerry & Liz, Gloucestershire (April 2008). 'Thank you so much for the weekend. I must say your cottage is spectacular - you have a real eye for interiors and the quality of the renovation and furnishings is stunning. We had 3 days of great weather, the kids were even swimming in the sea. They didn't want to leave and now want to live there!' Adam & Jane, Hertfordshire (May 2008). 'Thank you for a wonderful 3 days in your beautiful cottage. It was everything we had dreamed of and more. We absolutely fell in love with The Artists' Cottage and the surrounding area.' Jayne & Gordon, Rockingham, Australia (June 2008).

'We had a fabulous time. The setting was wonderful and the cottage was just gorgeous. Daniel loved his cute little bedroom. He was even brave enough to swim in the pool!' Pamela & Roger, Glasgow (July 2008). 'Thank you for providing such a welcoming, comfortable taste of rustic charm for we city-dwellers. We all loved everything about the cottage. Of course the swimming pool is the icing on the cake - luckily the weather was glorious so we chilled out and lazed by the pool or braved its invigorating freshness!' John & Susan, Edinburgh (July 2008). 'Just a note to say how much we enjoyed the cottage. It is in a beautiful and unspoilt location and the views across the bay are something to remember. The quality of the finish and furnishing in The Artists' Cottage are incredible, really beautiful. We had some really lovely times there and we will remember it with great affection.' Susan & Phil, Hampshire (August 2008).

We've rented quite a few cottages during our 2 year expat assignment in Ireland and this cottage/studio was by far the best! The owners have spared no expense in refurbishing this old farm house with the highest quality appliances (kitchen and laundry), bathroom fixtures, bedding, decorations and it even had a pool! We didn't have the weather to utilize the pool, but we did enjoy sitting by it and taking in the spectacular ocean views! The size of the cottage fit our family of 4 perfectly (kids' ages were 6 and 8). We added the studio to accomodate another friend traveling with us. We traveled to all three peninsulas (Beara, Sheep's Head, and Mizen) by car for daily hikes. The scenery was spectacular with lots of cliffs (much nicer than the Cliffs of Moher!). We dined in the town of Bantry which is filled with wonderful restaraunts. The owner, Julie, was delightful to work with right from the start of the booking. She also gives you loads of information on things to do and restaraunts to go to. At the end of the day, it was always so wonderful coming back to the cottage and collapsing in those beds or sitting on the leather sofa next to a roaring fire in the stone fireplace. We had a wondeful stay on the Sheep's Head peninsula and highly recommend this property.

A very enjoyable holiday cottage.

Review Submitted: August 21, 2009 Date of Stay: August 2009
As UK/Irish expats we find ourselves renting many houses in UK and Ireland when visiting. We have no doubt that this house was the most enjoyable so far.
Enjoyable because the quality of the house, the thought that went into it, the peaceful location, and because on this trip we had grandparents with us. Being able to rent the adjacent studio meant that they could have their own space and peace when they wanted it, but still be only a few paces away.

The area is fabulous if you like the sea and sea views and don't mind the inevitable rain.
If you want big sandy beaches nearby, then you will be disappointed, and will need to drive an hour or so to Barley cove, which fills that need very well. However probably this is one of the reasons that this part is less touristy than some of the other area's of West Cork - for us another plus.

We concluded that to enjoy this location to the optimum you either need to spend time walking nearby on Sheep's head, and given the scenery this is recommended, or be prepared to drive on the bumpy Irish roads, which for the older people may get a little tiresome, or be quite happy to just be around the house.
The kids loved the garden which is safe enough for 4+ but some with toddlers would need to be careful of the small stream and pond.
Older children may run out of entertainment unless they are keen readers.

There are plenty of pubs a short drive away, in particular we enjoyed the "tin roof" pub, but we really didn't have enough time to explore as many Pubs and eating places as we would have liked - a good reason to return sometime.

Back to the house - too many good things to say to mention them, and only one significant negative - we would suggest that having a little less "stuff" in some places would be better. and give guests more space to put their own things.

We would definitely hope to come back if circumstances allow, and we would definitely recommend it to friends - something that we would not say about most other houses we rent!
Owner's Response: Just to respond to a couple of points regarding the pool area and suitability of the property for children in case of any concerns:

The pool is 20' x 20' and between 3'-5' deep with steps and is partially heated by solar panels. It is located near the garden pond and stream and is not fully enclosed due to the hillside location/layout. We recommend that young children are carefully supervised in this area of the garden at all times for safety reasons. We provide pool toys, including arm bands and goggles.

Regarding entertainment for older children, apart from the pool there is also access to a computer, TV with Sky channels, CD players and DVD (including selection of films), as well as board games, books and 2 bikes (adult sized). There are many things to do in the local area for children of all ages, including bike rental, boat trips, whale watching, fishing, quad biking, sea kayaking, a playground in the local village as well as pebble beaches (one within 10 minutes' walk). There is also a cinema in Bantry for rainy day entertainment.

Both Cottage and Studio are fully furnished and equipped as our second home rather than just a holiday let. If you have any further concerns, please get in touch and we will provide more detailed information.

West Cork jewel

Finnian Chicago and Dublin, Ireland
Review Submitted: July 14, 2009 Date of Stay: June 2009
This is a place kitted out in delectable fashion—an Aga cooker (in a super kitchen) keeps everything warm and welcoming (great for coming in out of the rain), while all the vintage-style but up-to-the-minute bathrooms and plumbing fixtures are from Fired Earth. As for the bed linen you sink into at the end of the day—it's from the White Company. No, I’m not hung up on brand names (believe it or not!). But it really added to the experience to enjoy substantial, eye-catching, well-crafted things: for example, five-year-old Eve doesn’t know much about brands—apart from Disney!—but she spent so much time in the claw-footed bathtub that we were glad she isn’t a Disprin! Meanwhile, her brother couldn’t get enough of the Italianate swimming pool. It's very beautifully set in the Irish landscape—all the interiors reflect Irish venacular style: e.g., floors cut from flagged stone (which look especially well in the no-less-than two sun rooms). In short, not many owners will pop Molton Brown skin care in your en-suite! You feel trusted and well cared for while staying in Laharandota.
