Pepeekeo House Rental Photos and Description

2 Bedrooms, 1.5 Baths, Sleeps 4 adults or families of 6 with younger children

The Grand Suite at Onomea

The Grand Suite is the main house and largest of three dwellings on our five acre, country refuge. It is approximately 2200 SF of living space plus a screened lanai, a second story lanai and an open dining patio. It's many large windows frame lovely tropical views and an ocean blue horizon. The two upstairs bedrooms sleep up to six: two in a queen bed; two in a full bed; one in each of two twin sized beds; The bedrooms share a covered lanai with views of the ocean a half mile away. The newly renovated bathroom has hand-cut stone tile from Indonesia and a luxury soaking tub/shower. The living room has 20 foot ceilings and a wall of windows. It's a bright and spacious place to curl up and enjoy a book or a movie. Many guests spend lots of time just enjoying the house and surroundings. The full sized, fully equipped kitchen is it's own unique space with a breakfast nook and an adjoining formal dining room. The antique dining table extends out for larger families. You can also dine on the covered patio complete with barbecue and outdoor fireplace. The walk down our road to Onomea Bay is one of the lovliest in all of Hawaii.

Our country retreat is comprised of three separate and private dwellings on five landscaped acres. The three dwellings are adjoined by covered breezeways, each entirely private from one another. My wife and I live in the 'master cottage'. We can provide you with touring guidance, directions, dining suggestions and of course just help out if you need an extra pillow or blanket.

If you need accommodations for more than 6, the Garden Suite at Onomea is a smaller cottage rental (see HomeAway Property # 371622) The two accommodations can be rented together by special arrangement. Together, the main house and the suite sleep up to 9.

The Grand Suite at Onomea is best suited to 4 adults, 2 couples, or families up to 6 with younger children. There are several photo angles of the bedrooms but please note that there are just the two bedrooms and the one full bath upstairs plus a half bath downstairs (not included in photos).

Some activities we recommend you think about during your stay, here on the east side of the Island of Hawaii......

Horseback riding in Kohala or Waipio Valley; Hiking; a zipline adventure; several nearby beach parks, snorkeling, Champaign Ponds, photography, hiking; bird watching; a visit to the 13,980 foot summit of Mauna Kea where 7 international telescopes are redefining our understanding of the heavens (a visitor center is open daily at the 9,000 foot level); Alahanui Park - Ocean-side Warm Springs Pond; the Lyman Museum, the Tsunami Museum, the Hilo zoo, Mauna Loa Macadamia Nut farm and factory; and.... Volcano National Park. There is a clickable calendar at this site. Please check your dates for availability and contact us about any questions. About Randall Duryea

Together we have many stories to tell... about location scouting for film and Tv, performing in Tv and theater, photo assignments, llama farming, life in New York City, LA, Montana, growing up in the territory of Hawaii, the band, our kids. If you come and see us and care to share some we say in Hawaii... we can Talk Story together.

Randall Duryea purchased this house in 2003

Why Randall Duryea chose Pepeekeo

This is one of the most beautiful neighborhoods in all of Hawaii. It is gorgeous here, and we'd love to share it with you.

What makes this house unique

Our place is peaceful... We are on the rainier side of Hawaii. It's never particularly hot here, never cold, though it might get chilly enough to grab a cotton sweater or flannel shirt early in the morning. The air is soft and full of the smell of flowers. The rivers and waterfalls speak to the rain, the rain responds and the birds and crickets and tree frogs provide the chorus of life all around.

Guestbook comments from the owner

The house became our home away from home. It was one of the most relaxing vacations we have had. The eight nights at the house were wonderful. It has a kitchen that is fully stocked with anything a person could need or want. The owners Randall and Donna provided excellent hospitality. They were there when questions came up but were never intrusive. I had mentioned we planned on going boogie boarding and Donna left boogie boards out for us to use if needed. The views were spectacular! We woke up to blue skies, ocean view with beautiful trees (a living paradise). On the days that it rained we would sit in the living room and look at the beautiful water shimmering outside. The pictures in the posting are all accurate. The beds and pillows were very comfortable. We look forward to another vacation at this location. We would highly recommend renting this house for anyone's vacation.

A Wonderful Way to Experience the East Side!

  • 5 of 5
This two-story house is a beautiful open architectural design, with many, many windows and two lanais. Luxury fixtures and materials, a large, open kitchen, and is decorated and furnished with wonderful antiques and accessories. The view from the house is lush and green with blooming flowers. The location is private with truly beautiful vast, green grounds surrounding it. It is conveniently about 10 minutes north of Hilo. The owner, Randal, was very welcoming and considerate of our comfort and full of great visit suggestions and tips. A very comfortable place to stay! Thanks very much Randal!

This home is lovely and so peaceful! If you want to be on the Hilo side of the island, this is the place to stay. The kitchen is incredibly well stocked, the living room is so comfortable and the screened porch is a lovely place to sit and enjoy the setting. Randall is a very responsive host. We had a wonderful time.

Excellent host, beautiful setting, well priced

  • 5 of 5
The place is as advertised; well maintained and in a beautiful setting.
It is 10 min from Hilo.
The host, Randall, is thoughtful, helpful and most friendly.
We would definitely recommend this place without reservation, and would stay there again when we return.
This is a great value.

Beautiful property with all accoutrements

  • 5 of 5
We stayed here for four nights and found the property to be incredibly beautiful and welcoming. The house has everything you could possibly need. The kitchen is well-stocked with dishes, great cookware, basic pantry supplies, appliances, spices, and whatever you might need. Also, entertainment choices abound---DVDs, CDs, Netflix, tons of great books, everything you need for downtime, if you choose, because the family hospitably provided lots of suggestions for activities.

The setting is beautiful, located near a scenic drive and the botanical gardens and you can easily imagine that you are in the botanical gardens yourself. We loved watching the chickens stroll around the yard and were entertained by their antics. (Not to worry, there's no rooster to wake you!)

The only thing I can think of that would improve the property is having a clothes dryer easily accessible. As another reviewer noted, towels do not easily dry because of the humidity. However, that being said, it certainly is not a deal-breaker, because everything else completely overrides it! Highly recommended!

A gorgeous, peaceful home base!

  • 5 of 5
We had a wonderful visit to The Big Island with our base at this property. We had originally planned to arrive on July 29 and stay for nine nights but United Airlines had different ideas. We finally got to Hilo five days late -- can you imagine? Half of our vacation! It could have been a disaster but Randall, the owner/manager, worked with us and we were able to shift our stay by five days and still have our 10 days in Hawaii. Randall was absolutely wonderful -- not only did he arrange for two other accommodations for us, he was there to attend to our every need without being intrusive in any way. The home is perfectly clean, beautifully decorated, very homey, comfortable, roomy and very private. Everything is provided including interesting movies, books and tourist information (the best resource being the "The Big Island Revealed" guide book), The kitchen is well-equipped and has a gorgeous view as does every room in the house. Be aware that there are only two bedrooms but beds enough for six, and two bathrooms but only one shower. We had 6 there and we worked it out by having some of us shower at night and some in the morning. The bathrooms are amazing by the way -- lovely wood and stone. The one thing we would have liked would have been a clothes dryer. We hung wet clothes and towels but, because of the humidity, they were often still wet or damp in the morning. I wouldn't trade it for the drier side of the island though -- the grounds are lush, gorgeous and well-maintained. A short walk on Old Onomea Rd. takes you through a jungle of amazing vegetation, birds and a primeval-looking creek down to the Four Mile Scenic Loop and ocean views. The Tropical Botanical Gardens (which is fabulous, by the way) is on the Scenic Loop as well as What's Shakin', which serves up the best all-fruit smoothies and has food as well. A perfect spot after a visit to the gardens. There's also a place to go horseback riding a 5 minute walk from the house. We had excellent guides for our ride (Cory and Clayton), good horses, ocean views and a raging waterfall. Awesome! As I mentioned earlier, we also stayed in the cottage/studio for one night. The cottage, like the house, is beautiful and immaculate. It is set up for sleeping three comfortably, has a small kitchen for simple meals, an awesome bathroom and a private lanai. In conclusion, I would HIGHLY RECOMMEND either of these properties. Thank you Randall! You're the best!

Wonderful stay in Paradise!

  • 5 of 5
Our family of 6 had a great stay at this beautiful house. It was a very peaceful setting and Randall was a great host. We really appreciated the good advice on places to go in the vicinity of the house. He was also very accommodating to our family and made our stay in Hawaii a great one to remember.
The house served as a great base to almost everywhere on the east side of the island - only 5-10 minutes or so from Hilo and the farmer's market and the wonderful beaches in the area. It was a great place to come home to after a gruelling day hiking at Volcano park or after a peaceful afternoon at the hot springs and tide pools searching for eels and turtles.
The house was very well kept with a great kitchen, dining room and living room on the main floor. We loved using the barbecue on the deck and eating outside. The bedrooms up stairs provided lots of room for our family.
Thanks again for the great stay and we look forward to visiting again.
