Pepeekeo House Rental Photos and Description

2 Bedrooms, 1.5 Baths, Sleeps 4 adults or families of 5 with younger children

The Grand Suite at Onomea

The Grand Suite is the main house and largest of three dwellings on our five acre, country refuge. It is approximately 2200 SF of living space plus a screened lanai, a second story lanai and an open dining patio. It's many large windows frame lovely tropical views and an ocean blue horizon. The two upstairs bedrooms sleep up to six: two in a queen bed; two in a full bed; one in each of two twin sized beds; The bedrooms share a covered lanai with views of the ocean a half mile away. The newly renovated bathroom has hand-cut stone tile from Indonesia and a luxury soaking tub/shower. The living room has 20 foot ceilings and a wall of windows. It's a bright and spacious place to curl up and enjoy a book or a movie. Many guests spend lots of time just enjoying the house and surroundings. The full sized, fully equipped kitchen is it's own unique space with a breakfast nook and an adjoining formal dining room. The antique dining table extends out for larger families. You can also dine on the covered patio complete with barbecue and outdoor fireplace. The walk down our road to Onomea Bay is one of the lovliest in all of Hawaii.

Our country retreat is comprised of three separate and private dwellings on five landscaped acres. The three dwellings are adjoined by covered breezeways, each entirely private from one another. My wife and I live in the 'master cottage'. We can provide you with touring guidance, directions, dining suggestions and of course just help out if you need an extra pillow or blanket.

If you need accommodations for more than 6, the Garden Suite at Onomea is a smaller cottage rental (see HomeAway Property # 371622) The two accommodations can be rented together by special arrangement. Together, the main house and the suite sleep up to 9.

The Grand Suite at Onomea is best suited to 4 adults, 2 couples, or families up to 6 with younger children. There are several photo angles of the bedrooms but please note that there are just the two bedrooms and the one full bath upstairs plus a half bath downstairs (not included in photos).

Some activities we recommend you think about during your stay, here on the east side of the Island of Hawaii......

Horseback riding in Kohala or Waipio Valley; Hiking; a zipline adventure; several nearby beach parks, snorkeling, Champaign Ponds, photography, hiking; bird watching; a visit to the 13,980 foot summit of Mauna Kea where 7 international telescopes are redefining our understanding of the heavens (a visitor center is open daily at the 9,000 foot level); Alahanui Park - Ocean-side Warm Springs Pond; the Lyman Museum, the Tsunami Museum, the Hilo zoo, Mauna Loa Macadamia Nut farm and factory; and.... Volcano National Park. There is a clickable calendar at this site. Please check your dates for availability and contact us about any questions. About Randall Duryea

Together we have many stories to tell... about location scouting for film and Tv, performing in Tv and theater, photo assignments, llama farming, life in New York City, LA, Montana, growing up in the territory of Hawaii, the band, our kids. If you come and see us and care to share some we say in Hawaii... we can Talk Story together.

Randall Duryea purchased this house in 2003

Why Randall Duryea chose Pepeekeo

This is one of the most beautiful neighborhoods in all of Hawaii. It is gorgeous here, and we'd love to share it with you. Lined with tall royal palms, Old Onomea Road is our quiet little lane where artists will sometimes quietly visit just to paint the scene. The Hawaii Tropical Botanical Garden is walkable from our house as are the Smoothie Stand on the Scenic Hwy and the Low Store... a little convenience store in the same family for 100 year. Come visit!

What makes this house unique

Our place is peaceful... We are on the gorgeous, tropical, and green side of the Big Island. Far less touristy than the Kona side, it's never particularly hot her and never cold, though it might get chilly enough to grab a cotton sweater or flannel shirt early in the morning. The air is soft and full of the smell of flowers. Our grounds are park... five acres of peaceful privacy with ocean views from the bedrooms. The mountain, rivers and waterfalls speak back to the rain, the rain responds and the birds and crickets and tree frogs provide the chorus of life all around.

Guestbook comments from the owner

The house became our home away from home. It was one of the most relaxing vacations we have had. The eight nights at the house were wonderful. It has a kitchen that is fully stocked with anything a person could need or want. The owners Randall and Donna provided excellent hospitality. They were there when questions came up but were never intrusive. I had mentioned we planned on going boogie boarding and Donna left boogie boards out for us to use if needed. The views were spectacular! We woke up to blue skies, ocean view with beautiful trees (a living paradise). On the days that it rained we would sit in the living room and look at the beautiful water shimmering outside. The pictures in the posting are all accurate. The beds and pillows were very comfortable. We look forward to another vacation at this location. We would highly recommend renting this house for anyone's vacation.

Great Place!

  • 4 of 5

This was a beautiful place to stay - the house is exactly as it looks - beds comfortable, everything clean and a great kitchen. Randall the host is very helpful if you need anything. We liked the proximity to Hilo - out of town, but still close enough to drive in and get a few groceries. The north and south coasts of this side of the island are very beautiful and we were very glad we didn't skip the Hilo side. And our daughter enjoyed the wifi and Neflix.

beautiful place

  • 5 of 5

My husband, 12yr old daughter and I stayed for almost two weeks in this beautiful home and each day appreciated it more and more. We felt so at home. It was clean and had the perfect mix of beautiful antiques and personal touches without being cluttered or overpretencious. Randall was so helpful and considerate, we've never had a better host. Both he and Donna felt like friends from the get go. It was great to have them there, yet the arrangement of the property brilliantly keeps everyones privacy so that was never an issue in the slightest. The grounds were gorgeous and morning walks on their road were sublime. We will be back.

Wonderous Moments in a Heavenly Setting

  • 5 of 5

Words do not really do justice to our one week vacation in this private country home in Pepeekeo outside of Hilo. Although I read the description of the location and amenities, I was still impressed by the beautiful grounds and how well and comfortable the home was prepared for guests. Who expects a large user friendly kitchen, beautiful views from the two lanais, fresh eggs from chickens, bananas from the trees, and a host that goes beyond your expectations. In addition, there was so much to do every day including zip lining, touring the volcano, visiting the Hawaii Tropical Botanical Gardens, snorkeling, going to the beach. We had awesome meals at Hilo Bay Café, Le Magic Pan, Pesto's, and Moonstruck Patisserie for breakfast. I've spoken so highly of our experience that all our grown children and friends want to go there. Next time I go, I plan to spend a couple of days reading the wonderful books in the library.

Accurate location, the date palms are easy to see from the road and help with directions to the home. The property was "very" clean and well maintained. Randall was very helpful and always ready to give information! We would definitely recommend the home to others who would love to see the Hilo side of the Island.

Fantastic stay in Onomea

  • 5 of 5

No wonder this area was once reserved for Hawaiian royalty. It's absolutely gorgeous! This property is at the heart of it all. The scenic drive, Onomea Bay, Hawaiian Botanical Gardens and the best smoothie shop on the planet (Whats Shakin')!

Randall the owner is a great host. Very knowledgeable about the area. A wonderful home away from home with everything you could wish.

We can help you with touring or restaurant tips. There are massage therapists in the area who will come to the house, meal catering can be arranged if you reserve early, and we have a variety of beach supplies at hand (fins, face masks, snorkels, beach chairs, towels and small back packs). We will consider small special events or gatherings such as a very small wedding. We have lots of DVD's and internet Tv. No broadcast or cable Tv. Please let us know if your children are very young... we will remove low laying items that could be damaged. Hilo is the wet side of the island. We get sun and we get rain. Rain and sun is not predictable by season. We have 2 dogs...... Buddaboy and Hoku (who charm everyone!) We keep them close but they may come to visit you! Our 2 cats stay mostly in our private cottage (on site) but our cats very occasionally visit the main house when guests are not in residence. Visitors with strong pet allergies should take note.
