Mala A Kai “Garden by the Sea” is a quaint (non-smoking) three bedroom, two bath home situated forty minutes from Kailua Kona and a short two minute walk to Pebble Beach (polished flat lava stones), a secluded community beach with some of the best snorkeling, kayaking and diving on the island. You will be pleasantly surprised at the amazing ocean views and the tropical charm this relaxing beach house provides. “Mala A Kai” is tucked away at the end of a short street that backs up to the remote vastness of both ocean and mountain landscape. You can sit on the lanai and listen to the sounds of the seasonal Humpback whales breaching, watch the dolphins spinning or the sun setting on any given day.
In the back of the house an element of surprise awaits you as a secret garden grows with bananas, pineapple, papayas and many other native Hawaiian plants.
From the front of the home you will be greeted by a modest entrance and a single car garage to park your car and stow beach gear, towels and ice chests from your day’s adventure. The air conditioned home is furnished with chic, comfortable, tropical furniture and decor. A fully equipped kitchen with stainless steel appliances allows easy access to the lanai for eating alfresco or barbequing at sunset. The master suite has ocean, mountain and garden views with a queen bed. The adjoining bathroom has double sinks, tub and shower. Enjoy surf, sunsets & whale watching from your lanai, kitchen, living area & master bedroom. The Captains suite (bedroom) with queen bed, and garden views inspires nautical adventures on the open sea, relaxing
in a tropical paradise or walking barefoot on the beach collecting shells along the shore. The third bedroom is equipped with desk and computer, corner set twin beds. The guest bathroom has a tub, shower and sink. Commercial grade elliptical machine can be found in the garage area with a TV and ocean view for your heart smart work out.
Kona Paradise is a small rural subdivision, conveniently located in the heart of Kona Coffee land and Macadamia Nut country. It is close to a variety of great beaches and tourist attractions which include the Pu’uhonua o Honaunau, City of Refuge, National Historical Park, and Two Step for world renowned snorkeling. Captain Cook Monument for kayak and snorkel adventures is also close by. The historic Ali’i Trail edges the coastline and can be hiked in both directions from Pebble Beach just 2 minutes from “Mala A Kai”. Ho’okena Beach is a sand beach park approximately 10 minutes north which is good for keki play and boogie boarding. Miloli, a historic fishing village is 15 minutes south in the other direction. Kailua Kona town is close enough for night life, shopping, and even surfing. There is a grocery store just 20 minutes north that will provide for all your grocery needs. Small restaurants and fruit stands are to be found along the highway and provide fresh, locally grown produce and coffee. On Sundays the farmers and artisans in the area sponsor a farmers market which is located next to the local area grocery store. The volcanoes National Park with an active volcano is “a must see” and is 1 1/2 hours south. This is truly Kona Paradise!
We are originally from the Pacific Northwest. Troy was a commercial fisherman for 28 years and Mary is a special education teacher. 12 years ago we moved to Hawaii for the sun & sea. The endless summer foe work and play year round. We are avid gardeners who love the diversity of the islands.
Troy Vought purchased this house in 2005
Mala a Kai was the prefect place for us to live close to town but in a rural farming community with the beach at our door step. Listening to the whales at night while wearing shorts year round what could be better. This house is centrally located to all the Big Island has to offer. Volcano to the south, coffee, macnuts, great beaches & diving, the town and resorts to the north.
We love to hang out in the garden and whale watch from the lanai or enjoy an ocean swim anytime of day. Fresh topical fruit direct from our own garden. We have a quiet peaceful paradise.
This is the first VRBO home I have ever rented, and I was so pleased with all the wonderful amenities! I booked this for a family Christmas vacation, with myself, my husband, our three children, (age 17, 17, 10) and my parents. My parents enjoyed their own suite with private bathroom, and stunning views. I packed the kids' stockings, hoping to make Hawaii feel like our Alaska Christmas', and arrived at Mala a Kai to find the owners had lovingly decorated the entire house with wreaths, a Christmas tree, dishes and linens just for us! We had a wonderful Christmas, and my daughter slept under the tree the entire stay.
The location is peaceful, with no neighbors able to see in your home. The view from the lanai was relaxing. We saw wild goats, birds, and geckos. We saved money not eating out, and cooked on the BBQ almost nightly. Our kids loved how close Pebble Beach was, and I loved relaxing. The snorkeling was wonderful, and we appreciated using the owners beach equipment! Troy and Mary have truly thought of everything! We appreciated the book of recommended sites/vendors to use, and the list of open air markets.
I recommend this location because it is close to Kona to access shopping, the harbor, and other excursions. If you must have the nightlife, and be free of driving...stay in Kona. If you are looking for a relaxing, "people-free" environment without ambient noise, stay at Mala a Kai! We loved it and plan on coming back someday!
For first time VRBO users, make sure you disclose the number of people who intend to stay at the unit with you. I didn't know that the price is set by how many occupants plan to stay, and that makes sense considering water has to be delivered to this area and utilities increase with the # of people using. This may seem like common sense, unless you're like me, who is used to a private well and unlimited water.
We stayed 3wks at this rental and was so glad that we did!!
The owner met us as we drove up to the rental and showed us around the place. It had everything to make us comfortable as if we were in our own home. We ate out twice during our stay as we loved having our meals out in the lanai, watching the sunset/sunrise, and listening to our music (quietly, as there is a noise ordinance). We did not need to buy extraneous things as the owners had everything that we needed. There were so many games available to keep us occuppied but we did not need them as the outdoors kept us pretty busy. There was plenty of windows that we rarely used the AC and enjoyed the rain when it came. We originally came because of the snorkeling but that ended up a secondary issue for us as we enjoyed the weather and atmosphere so much more. We also loved talking and meeting the locals as they were all so easy to talk with and were very generous with their time. We jokingly told the owner that we would love to take the property off his hand when he was ready to sell it. Again, the rental had EVERTHING that you would need to make a perfect vacation. My husband wanted to stay another wk but I told him that he still needed to go back to work (he was not happy with me for reminding him of this fact, but I distracted him by pointing out something to him out in the lanai). We plan on coming back to the Big Island next yr. The rental helped to make this the most relaxing vacation, the people, and the mild, temperate weather took ahold and ensured that we would return. Thank you, Troy, for allowing us to scratch your brain about the possibility of making this our retirement home.
I am overdue on my review of Mala a Kai. First off, the pictures do not do the place complete justice. It is even better in person than the pictures show. The house and unobscured views to the north, from the Lanai, are stunning. The house was also stocked better than any other VRBO property we have experienced. All the household products you would need such as soap (for the excellent washer/dryer), dishwasher tabs, and paper products. Also a fresh bag of coffee beans and all the cooking spices and utensils you may need. Not to mention all the beach gear, such as huge towels and snorkel gear!
It was our first time to Hawaii and we chose the Big Island as it seemed to offer more diversity than any other island. I never realized how true that would be. In a simple 20 mile drive, you can go from lush wetlands to lava flows and green pastures. I truly though the southern part where this house is located was going to somehow be depressing out in a lava field or something. But it is actually in quite a lush area. There is an old lava flow next to the neighborhood but it is fascinating to see how the plants are taking it back over and finding places to root and flourish. The steepness of the road goes away after 2-3 trips and you realize the steepness is the only way to have homes in here. I think that may preserve the views as well from over-development. Just be sure to use low gear on your rental and you will have no issues.
I also think this is a great location for proximity to just about everything. It is a good midpoint for adventures to the northern side of Kona as well as being closer to Volcanoes National Park. And don't miss the Black Sand beach along the way.
My wife and I had our 14 and 11 year old kids with us and they are both ready to move there! We went off on adventures almost every day we were there. To the tune of over 1400 miles on our rental in just 10 days! Now that we have seen and experienced everything, it would be nice to have a week or three at Mala a Kai and just be home-bodies. Enjoy the stunning areas that are right outside your door (Pebble Beach) or just up the street south of Kona.
A few of our favorite things, in no particular order:
*Green Sand Beach
*Black Sand Beach
*Volcanoes National Park and the drive down Chain of Craters road
*Mauna Loa observatory
*Pololu Valley Lookout (nearly as spectacular as Waipio Valley but a prettier drive and closer)
My fiancee and I recently stayed at this house, and our only complaint was that we wish we had stayed longer! The house was great, very clean, and has all of the appliances you would think you'd ever need for a vacation. We cooked our own meals while here, and had the privilege of grilling out on the deck with a beautiful ocean view. The kitchen is well stocked with various things for cooking. The bed we stayed in was also one of the most comfortable beds I think I've ever slept on. The garden out back was beautiful and was a great place to eat breakfast in the morning.
Our favorite thing was all of the beach equipment on hand for use. We took advantage of the snorkeling equipment and saw some beautiful fish and coral at a nearby snorkeling area. There are also tons of beach chairs, towels, picnic bags, and other miscellaneous beach fare.
While we only had 2 people staying here, you could easily accommodate bigger parties, probably up to 6 or so people I would think. It is very spacious.
Overall, a great experience, and when we (inevitably) come back to the big island, we will probably be staying here again. Definitely recommended!
We just spent 10 nights at Mala a Kai. It was everything we expected but much more!! The owners have supplied this home with much more than most people would expect. When you see it in person, it is much better than the pictures. Everything was immaculately clean, well organized and maintained. The owner was extremely helpful in answering questions and giving us information about things to do & great recommendations for places to eat. We would love to come back and will definitely recommend it to friends & family. Another thing that helped us plan our days was the purchase of the book "Hawaii The Big Island Revealed". Everything we did as recommended by the author turned out to be awesome--from restaurants to activities. We loved Pebble Beach just down the road from the house. And we walked the Kings Trail both ways from the beach several times. Awesome views & sites. Snorkeling, kayaking & the volcanoes were some of the highlights. And also go to the Botanical Gardens just north of Hilo--incredibly beautiful. We explored all the way around the island and the book ended up being a reliable guide for most anything. Restaurant recommendations:Kona Coffee House, Ke'ei Cafe, Coffee Shack, Mi's Italian Bistro, Holuakoa Gardens & Cafe in Holualoa & Kaleo's Bar & Grill in Pahoa. You will not go wrong by renting this house. It was also very quiet & peaceful to come home to after a busy day.
Mala a Kai is very modern and well appointed. All of the appliances are a real pleasure to use, being new and high-end quality. Indoors, the home is super clean and tastefully decorated. Air conditioning is a major plus, even though we kept the temperature around 78 to 80, it made the home quite comfortable. Bedrooms being at opposite ends of the home would make it perfect for two couples who want to share a rental without giving up privacy. There are beach supplies of various sorts in the garage, a small cooler came in handy for some all day excursions. The computer room is a great bonus, we set up our laptop there for evening use. Outdoors, the front yard has fragrant plumeria and jasmine, and in the back there is a secret garden in the shade, with many different plants, and two sitting areas with chairs. The ocean view is beautiful, and the neighborhood quiet. The road down to the property is very steep, but doable, just drive slowly. Pebble Beach is at the bottom of the road, where we found the only two seashells of our entire trip. Mary and Troy were a pleasure to work with, and Troy had some useful advice for us when we first arrived and needed assistance. Don't try to park a regular car in the garage, it is accessable only for high clearance vehicles. Instead park in front of the patio, at the end of the road where there is a wooden marker. We thoroughly enjoyed our time there and would recommend this home to anyone wanting to stay near Kona. It is exactly the kind of home I would love to own someday.
