EXPERIENCE LAKE MICHIGAN LIVING AT THIS 1930'S CHARMING 5BR COTTAGE

Lakeside Cottage Rental Photos and Description

5 bedrooms, 2 full bathroom, sleeps 11

Located in historic Lakeside and just steps from Pier Street Beach, this newly renovated cottage marries the charm of yesterday with modern amenities.Great care and attention to detail was paid to assure that our guests would walk into the cottage and feel that they were in for a treat. Original beaded board ceilings, Douglas Fir wood floors, french doors and screened porch lend it character. The cottage is decorated in an eclectic style that mixes and matches vintage pieces with comfy furniture. As part of the renovation, new windows with full screens, two separate HVAC systems, one on each floor, and a 50 gallon hot water heater were installed. Bathrooms and kitchen have tile floors and new fixtures. Ceiling fans create cool breezes on the main floor rooms and porch. The Great Room has a 47 inch HD flat screen TV with cable and internet access. The Front Parlor has a 36 inch flat screen TV with DVD. Games, books, and toys for young and old are on hand for family night gatherings. A plus is two bedrooms and full bathroom on the main floor for guests who may have mobility issues.

In the evening, gather around the fire pit on the brick paver patio while the Grill Master works his magic cooking on the natural gas Charbroil 5 burner grill. Meals can be eaten at the Patio table and picnic table.

Stored in the boat house are toys, lawn games and bikes for the whole family to enjoy. A backyard swing is a favorite. Beach towels, beach chairs, beach toys and umbrella are available for your use and an outdoor shower will refresh you after a day at the beach.

Situated in Harbor Country, there is no shortage of leisure activities to be enjoyed. Antique buffs can hunt for treasures, cyclists can hop on backroad trails and hikers can explore nature. Visit the Farmers' Market, Vineyards, art galleries, outlet mall and casino.

A stay at the cottage is about family and traditions and shared experiences; Fourth of July celebrations with fireworks and sparklers, sand castles and sun burn, lightning bugs and hide and go seek. It is my intent that the guests who stay at the cottage will create their own special memories and family tradition and look fondly back or look forward to their vacation at 'True Blue'.

As a first time airbnb'er, I didn't know what to expect. I was hosting a bachelorette weekend for my lifelong friend and we had visitors coming from as far as Washington DC and Haiti to celebrate. I knew the general vicinity we wanted to stay (most of us from Chicago or NW Indiana made the region a perfect getaway) but I wasn't sure of how this whole "lake cottage" thing worked. I enquired about a few houses but the charm of the little blue cottage, our ability to sleep up to 10, its proximity to the beach, and Rickie's warm welcoming guidance sealed the deal. We were blown away upon arrival. Books, games, gourmet dressings and condiments in the fridge, beach towels, toiletries, extra blankets, 2 web-enabled tvs that we used to look up the bride's old flames on facebook. Nothing had been forgotten. The house was impeccably kept, everything was perfectly appointed, and Rickie has a welcome guide that answered any and all FAQs. Not kidding: if we did nothing all weekend but stay in the house it would have been a success. Venturing out only made it better! The Stray Dog, the Whistle Stop Grocery, the Memorial Day Parade that commenced in front of the house, and the beach a mere 5 minute walk away only reinforced that we couldn't have picked a better spot. I recommend Rickie and the Little Blue Cottage highly. My friends and I have already coined an in-joke: for advice or questions about etiquette or hospitality, you need go no farther than asking yourself: WWRD? What would Rickie do? Thank you, Rickie, for being a shining example of hospitality and for offering to share your lovely home.

I grew up on the East coast and summered at the shore in New Jersey. It was a pleasure that was taken for granted. When I relocated to the Midwest, Lake Michigan became a worthy counterpart. The waves aren't as dramatic and the water isn't salty however I no longer have to worry about those jellyfish!

Rickie Hawkinson purchased this cottage in 2011

When we found the cottage, it was in a state of neglect after being left vacant for a few years. I like to say that she had good bones. I am a sucker for bead board ceilings and wide baseboards and trim. Throw in six paneled wood doors French Doors and hardwood floors and I am in heaven . The cottage has all this plus rooms that have angled ceilings and exposed rafters. This is authentic, not new to mimic old. We could imagine what she could look like with some hard work and determination. We had a vision of a cheerful, cozy cottage coming to life and being a wonderful place for friends and family to gather and to make memories like the cherished ones that I have of my childhood spent at the Jersey shore.

The cottage has history with its platted deed dated from the late 1880s and sits in the center of historic Lakeside, a beach community that dates back over one hundred years as a summer destination along Lake Michigan. There is a sense of being in touch with nature as you meander down paths lined by decades old pine trees with the roar of the lake on a blustery day in your ears. It is not uncommon to sight deer in the ravines and bluejays and cardinals perched in the trees. A highlight of the day is watching the breathtaking sunset over the lake with the orangery afterglow lighting up the sky. The cottage offers an escape from the hustle and bustle of everyday life and allows one to take a deep breath and step back if only for a short respite.

BEAUTIFUL, COZY, SPACIOUS HOME IN LAKESIDE, MI

  • 5 of 5
My friends and I enjoyed a wonderful week at Rickie's blue cottage in Lakeside, Michigan. When I first arrived at the house, I was overwhelmed by how beautiful the cottage was. From the screened-in porch, to the gorgeous front parlor, to the spacious living and dining room, this house has it all! There were plenty of bedrooms for all of our guests to sleep in, and the kids enjoyed the TV/DVD player for their PBS shows and post-naptime movies!

The location of the cottage is perfect with the beach only minutes away. Rickie provided fresh cut wood for the backyard fire pit and a yummy s'mores kit to enjoy with the fire! We used the grill one night to make BBQ chicken, and the outdoor shower was great for washing sand off our feet after a day at the beach!

I was so sad to leave and cannot wait to book this cottage again for future vacations with family and friends. I highly recommend this house to anyone looking for a quiet, relaxing, and cozy spot for your group to come together and enjoy the beauty of Harbor Country. Less than two hours from Chicago, this cottage is perfect for anyone wanting to escape the everyday grind!

SNUGGLED IN FOR A COZY WHITE XMAS

  • 5 of 5
Our extended family gathered here for the holidays and experienced an old fashioned Christmas. The cottage was decorated with fresh pines and fragrant candles to put us in a festive mood and the owner gifted us a basket of homemade cookies and treats.
The weather cooperated and we had enough snow to play in. The cottage was equipped with a sled and adult and children size snowshoes which was a pleasant surprise so a day was spent at Warren Dunes sledding. We also went ice skating and took walks along the lake.
We spent evenings playing board games and doing puzzles. There are DVDs and two TVs
that have expanded cable and internet access.
We really appreciated all the amenities that the cottage has but most importantly was the chance to spend time with each other and reconnect in such a welcoming home.

INCREDIBLY SWEET COTTAGE WITH PLENTY OF ROOM!

  • 5 of 5
Rickie has made this house incredibly cozy and comfortable, and she provides everything you might need for a wonderful vacation -- from beach games and towels to a fully stocked kitchen. We had a group of 9 people (7 adults, 2 kids) staying for a long weekend, and there was plenty of space for everyone. We all loved the fire pit and the easy walk to the beach! Would definitely return for another stay.

WHAT A DELIGHTFUL COTTAGE AND CHARMING AREA

  • 5 of 5
I stayed at the cottage with a small group of friends to celebrate my birthday. We absolutely loved how accessible the cottage is from Chicago, and how nice the Lakeside area and the home is. The house itself is charming and has all the creature comforts - wifi, flat screen TVs, nice bathrooms and kitchen. And even though house is superbly decorated, the best part might be the outdoors area! There's an expansive stone patio with a fire pit, multiple seating areas, a BBQ, a smoker, space for all the games and toys available in the boat house (lawn games, frisbees, bikes, etc.). Also, the house is across the street from a larger park if you want to play a game of touch football or ultimate frisbee (which we did!). It's just a short walk to the beach, which is clean and pleasant. There are some good restaurants in the area, and wineries and antique stores if they weather isn't cooperative. Rickie was pleasant to work with and has done an excellent job making this place feel like home while you're there. We'll definitely be back!

Owner's Response: The cottage has been the gathering place for many family celebrations this summer. We have hosted a family reunion as well as a 40th, 50th and 70th birthday
party. That is a lot of birthday candles being blown out!

Lakeside is the heart of several beach communities that straddle the shores of Lake Michigan in an area designated as Harbor Country . It is a quaint village dating back to the late 1800's and has been a vacation destination for over 100 years The historical Lakeside Inn was the gathering place of Chicagoans wanting to escape the heat of the city. One of its infamous guests was Al Capone who gathered here with his cronies for a game of cards. Today, it is as popular a place to stay as it was in years past.

Visitors can choose from a plethora of activities to entertain themselves. Antique shops and art galleries are dotted along Red Arrow Highway. There are several wineries that offer tours, tastings and food and entertainment. Three Oaks offers a theater with live performances and is the home of the Featherbone Factory which features shops and a micro whiskey distillery.

There are dedicated bicycling paths for the casual as well as the seasoned cyclists. Hiking and trails can be found in Warren Woods and Warren Dunes. The Galien River is a waterway for kayaking and canoeing. New Buffalo has a public boat launch.

For the thrill seekers, there is a casino to test one's luck.

A visit to Redamaks for their famous hamburgers and fries is a must as well as a trip into New Buffalo to eat at The Stray Dog.

There are may casual eateries as well as ones for fine dining such as Timothy's and Heston's. Luisa's Swedish Bakery is a local favorite for breads and sweet rolls and serves breakfast and lunch. There are long lines on weekends so get there early. The Farmers' Market is open weekends in Union Pier and should be on your list to visit to stock up on locally grown fruits and vegetables.

Last but not least is our Great Lake Michigan, where one can be entranced by its sights and sounds and fabulous sunsets.
