Overview

Lakeside Cottage Rental Photos and Description

5 bedrooms, 2 full bathroom, sleeps 11

Located in historic Lakeside and just steps from Pier Street Beach, this newly renovated cottage marries the charm of yesterday with modern amenities.Great care and attention to detail was paid to assure that our guests would walk into the cottage and feel that they were in for a treat. Original beaded board ceilings, Douglas Fir wood floors, french doors and screened porch lend it character. The cottage is decorated in an eclectic style that mixes and matches vintage pieces with comfy furniture. As part of the renovation, new windows with full screens, two separate HVAC systems, one on each floor, and a 50 gallon hot water heater were installed. Bathrooms and kitchen have tile floors and new fixtures. Ceiling fans create cool breezes on the main floor rooms and porch. The Great Room has a 47 inch HD flat screen TV with cable and internet access. The Front Parlor has a 36 inch flat screen TV with DVD. Games, books, and toys for young and old are on hand for family night gatherings. A plus is two bedrooms and full bathroom on the main floor for guests who may have mobility issues.

In the evening, gather around the fire pit on the brick paver patio while the Grill Master works his magic cooking on the natural gas Charbroil 5 burner grill. Meals can be eaten at the Patio table and picnic table.

Stored in the boat house are toys, lawn games and bikes for the whole family to enjoy. A backyard swing is a favorite. Beach towels, beach chairs, beach toys and umbrella are available for your use and an outdoor shower will refresh you after a day at the beach.

Situated in Harbor Country, there is no shortage of leisure activities to be enjoyed. Antique buffs can hunt for treasures, cyclists can hop on backroad trails and hikers can explore nature. Visit the Farmers' Market, Vineyards, art galleries, outlet mall and casino.

A stay at the cottage is about family and traditions and shared experiences; Fourth of July celebrations with fireworks and sparklers, sand castles and sun burn, lightning bugs and hide and go seek. It is my intent that the guests who stay at the cottage will create their own special memories and family tradition and look fondly back or look forward to their vacation at 'True Blue'.

About Rickie Hawkinson

I grew up on the East coast and summered at the shore in New Jersey. It was a pleasure that was taken for granted. When I relocated to the Midwest, Lake Michigan became a worthy counterpart. The waves aren't as dramatic and the water isn't salty however I no longer have to worry about those jellyfish!

Rickie Hawkinson purchased this cottage in 2011

Why Rickie Hawkinson chose Lakeside

When we found the cottage, it was in a state of neglect after being left vacant for a few years. I like to say that she had good bones. I am a sucker for bead board ceilings and wide baseboards and trim. Throw in six paneled wood doors French Doors and hardwood floors and I am in heaven . The cottage has all this plus rooms that have angled ceilings and exposed rafters. This is authentic, not new to mimic old. We could imagine what she could look like with some hard work and determination. We had a vision of a cheerful, cozy cottage coming to life and being a wonderful place for friends and family to gather and to make memories like the cherished ones that I have of my childhood spent at the Jersey shore.

What makes this cottage unique

The cottage has history with its platted deed dated from the late 1880s and sits in the center of historic Lakeside, a beach community that dates back over one hundred years as a summer destination along Lake Michigan. There is a sense of being in touch with nature as you meander down paths lined by decades old pine trees with the roar of the lake on a blustery day in your ears. It is not uncommon to sight deer in the ravines and bluejays and cardinals perched in the trees. A highlight of the day is watching the breathtaking sunset over the lake with the orangery afterglow lighting up the sky. The cottage offers an escape from the hustle and bustle of everyday life and allows one to take a deep breath and step back if only for a short respite.

Guestbook comments from the owner

Rickie was very kind when we met her upon arrival. My daughter, her girlfriends, and myself stayed there for a "girls' weekend". Rickie has really thought about any needs or wants a guest may have. The cottage is adorable. It is decorated with many "antique-y" items and made us all feel quite at home. Every room has its own personality. We loved staying here and will definitely recommend it to anyone we know. We had just a wonderful weekend, and will hopefully return.

5 Star Fall Weekend

  • 5 of 5
Would not hesitate to recommend this place and will definitely stay again. 6 adults and 3 kids under 12. Rickie was very responsive through the whole process and a
incredibly accommodating. Plenty of room in the house and the firepit out back was perfect spot every evening. A very nice welcome note and s'Mores kits was a very nice touch. the property is very well maintained and staged very nicely so it definitely has a vacation feel about it. Lake Michigan is under a ten minute walk and the location in general is very central to Harbor Country. Kitchen is well stocked for cooking large group dinners. We spent the weekend cooking in dinner, sitting around the fire, buying pumpkins from Dunges Farm and carving them, then hitting the outlet mall nearby. We go every fall and this property by far is a great location, charming and able to accommodate a larger group.

Amazing Bachelorette Winery Weekend Location

  • 5 of 5
We stayed for a weekend in the blue cottage and it was outstanding. Plenty of room for a group of 10 women to sleep and relax. The detail and décor in the home is beautiful, and the kitchen was stocked with anything you will need for cooking any meal. The cottage is within 20 minutes to the major wineries in the area, and a short 5 minute walk to the public entrance to the beach. I would easily go back again with my family or for a girls weekend.

Thank you Rickie for sharing your home with us!

Owner's Response: So glad to hear that you all had such a good time at the cottage. The winery trail in the fall leads you though winding roads and colorful landscapes and there are plenty of interesting stops along the way for dining and shopping and sightseeing. Hope that you took home a few local bottles of wine with you as souvenirs!

Everything was perfect

  • 5 of 5
Rickie did a beautiful job with the place. She had a basket of fresh breakfast bread and fresh coffee beans waiting for us. The house was in great shape and plenty big for the 6 adults and 3 kids (ages 4, 15 months and 13 months). The kitchen was completely stocked with everything we needed (cookware, plenty of spices, condiments, oils, coffee). You name it she had it. We cooked all of our meals in so I cannot speak to the local eateries but Rickie had a nice list of places to try. There were games galore in the garage for the whole family to enjoy. She provided firewood for a fire in the fire pit. She had beach towels and bikes. She even had a high chair and baby gate to contain the little ones. It was a life saver. I would absolutely stay here again. The location was wonderful as it was only a 5 min walk to the beach. There is a large antique mall just around the corner which was a great way to spend a few hours.
This place was perfect for our family. I am sure that whomever stays here will be happy that decision.

"Feeling at Home" while away at Blue Cottage

"Feeling at Home" while away at Blue Cottage
  • 4 of 5
Our family of 10, ranging from 1 to 50 in age enjoyed the cozy eclectic atmosphere of this southern, MI, "5 minute walk from the great lake" cottage. The weekend stay was just right for us this time with sunny September skies and 2 beautiful sunsets, even after a late afternoon shower. Shops, eateries and other local attractions looked inviting but we ran out of time---just enjoying the comfort of the cabin and the fresh beauty of Lake Michigan.
A welcome basket from owner Rickie brought a personal touch with local goodness! Thanks Rickie for the Apple Pie Bread and fresh Coffee Beans--(plus the toaster and coffee bean grinder; making "fresh" even fresher and "yummy even "yummier"!
We loved the fall décor, burning candles on the porch and table, vintage bikes-cute for our young lovers, the "just right" slammin' screen doors. the fire pit with the awesome grate and...more! We even helped ourselves to a pot of mint tea from along the sidewalk! The front screened in porch made for lovely sitting! Amazed at the space (fun big closets) yet the closeness it offers we would recommend the Blue Cottage to families like ours!
The photos we enjoyed online when looking for a place to vacation became the places we walked through, sat at and nestled into, for the night! Thank You for your accuracy in presenting The Blue Cottage!
A few small details-we didn't find the yellow garbage bags mentioned for recyclables. Hopefully our trash separation was helpful to the garbage pick-up service. Was there a pitcher in the kitchen for beverages? The pretty one with the beautiful arrangement was all I could find-(didn't want to disturb the added "touch"). The can opener wasn't functioning properly for us, may need a replacement:).
Other wise, very well-stocked we were thankful for the beach towels, games and even the bathroom scales upstairs!
Thank You for trusting us with your cottage; filled with all things livable! Blessings to you and your guests to come...who knows, it may just be us again at some point:)!
Sincerely--Doreen Mast for Donny and the kids too

Owner's Response: Hi Doreen,

Thank you for the thoughtfully written and detailed account of your experience at the cottage. All my efforts to make the cottage a memorable and delightful place to stay were rewarded in your comments. As for the few details you mentioned, yellow recycling bags can be found in the drawer with tin foil, Saran Wrap and plastic bags. There is a red pitcher on the shelving unit on the back porch and the balky can opener has already been replaced.
I am very glad that the cottage will be part of your family history.

Best Regards,

Rickie

wonderful house

  • 5 of 5
The blue cottage was clean and very well maintained. It was stocked with everything we needed. We spent a lot of time out side around the fire pit...even when a fire was not going. It was close to shopping and the beach. The bedrooms were super cute and comfy. We were slightly disappointed by how close to the neighboring stores we were....Very Close..
We would highly recommend this house to families. The owners were delightful and took great care to see things were taken care of.

Lakeside is the heart of several beach communities that straddle the shores of Lake Michigan in an area designated as Harbor Country . It is a quaint village dating back to the late 1800's and has been a vacation destination for over 100 years The historical Lakeside Inn was the gathering place of Chicagoans wanting to escape the heat of the city. One of its infamous guests was Al Capone who gathered here with his cronies for a game of cards. Today, it is as popular a place to stay as it was in years past.

Visitors can choose from a plethora of activities to entertain themselves. Antique shops and art galleries are dotted along Red Arrow Highway. There are several wineries that offer tours, tastings and food and entertainment. Three Oaks offers a theater with live performances and is the home of the Featherbone Factory which features shops and a micro whiskey distillery.

There are dedicated bicycling paths for the casual as well as the seasoned cyclists. Hiking and trails can be found in Warren Woods and Warren Dunes. The Galien River is a waterway for kayaking and canoeing. New Buffalo has a public boat launch.

For the thrill seekers, there is a casino to test one's luck.

A visit to Redamaks for their famous hamburgers and fries is a must as well as a trip into New Buffalo to eat at The Stray Dog.

There are may casual eateries as well as ones for fine dining such as Timothy's and Heston's. Luisa's Swedish Bakery is a local favorite for breads and sweet rolls and serves breakfast and lunch. There are long lines on weekends so get there early. The Farmers' Market is open weekends in Union Pier and should be on your list to visit to stock up on locally grown fruits and vegetables.

Last but not least is our Great Lake Michigan, where one can be entranced by its sights and sounds and fabulous sunsets.
