Gardiner Lodge Rental Photos and Description

5 bedrooms, 5 full bathrooms, sleeps 8-12

Rustic elegance with stunning, panoramic views of Yellowstone National Park on the banks of the Yellowstone River. We offer a unique, creative, upscale experience in a premier location for a truly memorable vacation.

This properties breathtaking scenery of Yellowstone National Park called for a glorious space, so we built it...

As artists, we wanted to create something different, tasteful and creative, where our guests could experience the grand views of Yellowstone in a unique way, wrapped in luxury and rustic elegance. High ceilings, huge windows, heavenly beds with down comforters, a gourmet kitchen with high end appliances, leather furniture, antiques, original art, creative details....We wanted it all.

We appreciate beauty in nature, architecture, and art and feel more people should have that opportunity. So now, you can experience Yellowstone, nature and wildlife, along with original fine art, in a finely designed, deluxe, comfortable and relaxing space. Designing the building in harmony with nature, we oriented it to the south, to take in loads of sunshine and even provide solar hot water for you too!

Our location is phenomenal - dramatic yet convenient. We are directly on the banks of the Yellowstone River with glorious, panoramic views overlooking Yellowstone National Park and Electric Peak (one of the highest peaks in Yellowstone). Watch sunrise on Electric Peak, wildlife roam through Yellowstone and sunset colors reflect on the Yellowstone River...all right out the windows!

Sitting at the far edge of Gardiner (a very small town), we’re close enough to walk (or ride one of our cruiser bikes! which are provided) to all the amenities...restaurants, groceries, shops, white water rafting, ice cream, pizza, etc.

The convenience of our property will make your vacation feel simplified and relaxed. By road, the Roosevelt Arch - the north entrance of Yellowstone National Park - is just a mile away. The Boiling River is just 2 miles away, where you can soak in the hot springs of Yellowstone. If you'd rather just watch Yellowstone from the deck or out the windows, we offer books, literature, chess, board games and puzzles. For the more adventurous in the family, they can walk up to one of the white water rafting companies in town, where they'll suit you up for a ride down the river - and they can wave to the other family members who are reading on the deck!

We have been enjoying our home, studios and gallery for a couple years now. Many people have come into our Elk River Art Studio & Gallery and commented on what a magnificent space it is and how they would love to sit, with the art around them, and take in those views for a while themselves. We’ve always felt that we have been extremely lucky and that more people should have the opportunity to experience living close to nature as well as with original fine art. It's good for the soul. So it gave us an idea….

We've renovated our Gallery and Studio spaces to accommodate overnight guests in this luxurious, creative setting.

We have found an historic, antique Yellowstone National Park luggage cart and we restored it to become your dining table, (seats 12) complete with antique pack saddles with custom made pendants that will be your dining chandelier.

Your gourmet kitchen has high end appliances - We are so excited to offer our guests the experience of cooking on a Lacanche range (simply the VERY best we believe - made in France and brought to us via ocean freight, so you can experience a range like no other!), a Subzero refrigerator/freezer and dishwasher drawers, too. There are soapstone countertops, antique hutches, and island seating. Fully stocked with pots, pans, glasses, dishes, etc., all you’ll need to bring is the food. (OR, the refrigerator can be stocked in advance, or catering arranged, with a bit of prior notice.)

If you'd prefer some outdoor cooking, the gas grill on the deck overlooks Yellowstone National Park and the Yellowstone River. You can fish in the river and grill them on the deck!

Each bedroom (there are 5 total - 4 attached and one unattached) has luxury linens with down comforters and down pillows and each has a private bath. In the Studio Suite, this sky lit bedroom has a king bed and windows overlooking Yellowstone National Park.

In your Gallery living room, simply enjoy the art and the Yellowstone views out the large windows - or use the drawing table/game table for family board games and puzzles (supplied).

For a luxury camping experience (commonly termed “glamping” these days), we’re creating an oasis by the river - included in your rental. At the river's edge and tucked into the riverbank, made from river rock, driftwood and screened in on one side, it’s the perfect way to experience sleeping close to nature. You'll hear the sounds of the river, and watch the stars in the “big sky”.... all while in a cozy bed with lamps and books on your bedside. The space can be used as a quiet ‘out post’ for the more adventurous couple or as a unique family camping experience. It’s complete with one luxury queen and 2 twin beds (bunks).

Let your creativity spark, let nature soak in, surround yourself with beauty and art, experience a new adventure, allow yourself the time and space to relax. Yellowstone National Park is an amazing place and your memories will last a lifetime – so we want to make it a truly unique experience for you. The way life in the Rocky Mountains should be – creative, artistic rustic elegance, close to, and in harmony with nature.

We're excited to share our spectacular mountain home with you. There's A LOT to experience in Yellowstone (we certainly love it!) and we'd be happy to point you in the right direction to help make it a vacation of a lifetime for you.

Your hosts,

Shirl & John

About Shirl Ireland

My husband and I are artists living, working and raising 2 children at the edge of Yellowstone National Park. We enjoy living with wildlife and nature surrounding us. We get outside every chance we get - I pack up my easel and paint in Yellowstone often and in our 'spare time' we hike, cross country ski, canoe and kayak.

Why Shirl Ireland chose Gardiner

We literally searched for years looking for 'the spot'. We are artists fortunate enough to live where ever we'd like and being surrounded by natural beauty is important to us. It doesn't get much better than this....the property is south facing with glorious views of Yellowstone National Park on the Yellowstone River. Yellowstone National Park was the world's first National Park - and there's a reason why. It's AMAZING! You could never be bored there is so much to see - from wildlife, to geysers, to awe-inspiring landscapes. Plus we're at the edge of a wonderful, friendly small town. We can walk to the grocery store, and Yellowstone National Park, too! Hiking, skiing and soaking in the hot springs are just minutes away. AND, we're close enough to take advantage of Livingston and Bozeman, Montana - a couple great towns with good vibes and bigger amentities. You can get to lots of art, outdoor activities and shopping after a beautiful drive up Paradise Valley (aptly named!). For a little longer day drives, Jackson Hole and the Tetons, Red Lodge Montana (over the Beartooth Mountains) or Cody Wyoming make for a couple great 'loops' through Yellowstone. That's why we call our spot 'the center of the universe'.

What makes this lodge unique

Not too many places on this Earth have what we have. How many people can watch a wolf pack hunt, eagles and osprey catch fish, bison herds graze, elk swim and twin pronghorns born - right from their dining room window? We've seen all of that and more. We watch Electric Peak (one of the highest mountains in Yellowstone Park), as the sun rises it turns a beautiful 'morning pink' with the soft sounds of the river in the background. We watch the sun set and turn the river to a ribbon of orange, then at night, with the moon above, the river again comes alive and sparkles with the moons reflection. And we see shooting stars right from our bedroom, in Montana's 'big sky'. We want our guests to not only experience this tremendous natural beauty, but also to surround them with art and a creative spirit. On vacation, when you have the time to take it all in, the sparks may rub off...and we'd love to be responsible for igniting your creativity or creating a memory of a lifetime!

This is a gorgeous home with beautiful views and every amenity you can think of. The art work/lighting and set-up of all the rooms and bathrooms are one of a kind. The pictures are very accurate. We were a family of 7 and were extremely comfortable. Our 26 year old loved the river bedroom and the rest of us would have like to sleep there but never manage to do it. The park entrance is only 1 mile away and Gardiner is a very cute not too touristy town. Big plus is having the Gardiner Market which is a decent store that has just about anything you would want(no Capers) and they have reasonable prices. We all agreed that it was the best kitchen we have ever encountered in a rental- sub-zero/french gas/electric range and copper pots. We really enjoyed the large dinning room table and the outdoor picnic table. The porch was also great for appetizers in the evening. I can't say enough about the beautiful views and sound of the river. Did I also mention that the Washer/Dryer came in very handy. We did lots of fly fishing and hiking and back and forth to the Boiling river. John and Sherl are very nice and extremely talented. They even mailed back our Bear Spray- which we didn't need to use. Thanks for the great experience!

The HOT House

  • 1 of 5
We arrived in Gardiner at precisely the same time an apparent record heat wave came through. Upon arriving at the house we were greeted with NO air conditioning. Apparently "NO ONE" has A/C in Gardiner. The description of the house on the internet is correct but needs the following details added. The house has several different levels. From the loft Bedroom to the kitchen area there are 42 steps. The details say it is handicapped accessible with limitations...if you can't use steps you can't go anywhere. The entire back of the house is all windows which let in the heat of the sun during the 16 hour summer days and makes the house extremely HOT. After visiting Yellowstone we came back to 95 degree heat in the house. The 5th bedroom is unattached. You have to go down 2 levels of deck stairs then climb down a steep cliff to the river to get to this "River Bed Outpost". AND there is no bathroom attached to this bedroom. I can't believe they would think people would actually use it for sleeping. It says there are art supplies and an easel....the easel had a picture on it....never saw any art supplies. The wireless internet NEVER worked. One morning there was a flying bat in one of the bedrooms. One morning we awoke and found that a critter had chewed through a package of bread.
If the weather had been MUCH cooler I'm sure our stay would have been more enjoyable. But for us it was the most miserable 5 days spent in Yellowstone. Wanting to get up early tour Yellowstone and come back to this great retreat to relax for the evening just did not happen. The afternoon sun was just too intense to enjoy the deck and the back of the house. Sorry for the bad review. I know you can't predict the weather but you should mention there is NO A/C.

A Little Piece of Heaven on Earth

  • 5 of 5
My family and friends just got back from staying in Shirl and John's beautiful rental vacation home. We've not been back yet a week and I can truly say that I am not yet over mourning our departure. The beauty we witnessed each day from our patio, to include a pronghorn family which is the subject of one of Shirl's blogs. The beauty outside our windows and from the porch was magical, majestic and humbling.

We were lucky enough to travel to Yellowstone and the Tetons on 4 occasions, raft the Yellowstone and just relax and enjoy God's critters. We saw Grizzly, Black Bears with cubs, multitudes of Bison, Pronghorn, Elk and Mule Deer. We were even lucky enough to see a Moose one day and a Mountain Goat late one evening as we returned home from Yellowstone.

Gardiner is a wonderful little town with a great little grocery store and several places to eat. But the kitchen and grill at the vacation home are both very comfortable and easy to use should you not want to eat out. Sitting around the kitchen area, drinking wine and visiting or playing games was both relaxing and fun.

Our trip was beyond words and our hosts were beyond comparison.
For those of you wondering about where to stay to visit Yellowstone, this is the place if you are looking for magic, beauty, hospitality and peace on earth.

Spring in Yellowstone

  • 5 of 5
Two years ago when we visited Shirl and John's gallery, they told us of their plans to convert the space to vacation rental. We knew it would be special, and I have to say, it really has turned out to be a tremendously beautiful and extremely comfortable vacation destination. I could go on and on about the various details of the place; the comfortable beds, the beautiful art, the attention to detail, but Shirl's description takes care of that. The thing I'd like to emphasize is the way it makes you feel. The oversized windows give you access to absolutely wonderful views of the Yellowstone River, and into the Park. After a long day of exploring, watching animals and taking hikes, it's so nice to sit in the gallery room, the sitting room by the kitchen, or out on the back deck talking about the day, reading a book, or just relaxing in the presence of the scenic beauty that is this part of the world. It feels like home, with the greatest backyard ever! And, you never know what will happen in that backyard! One day a Golden Eagle attempted to catch a Marmot (unsuccessfully) just across the river, and a day or two later, a cow Elk had her calf in the same general area. Add to all of this that Shirl and John and just super people. We've been to Yellowstone over a dozen times. Wish I could have stayed here for a month!

Beautiful lodge for Yellowstone family vacations

  • 5 of 5
If you want a memorable and special place to stay for your Yellowstone vacation, look no farther! It’s difficult to describe how magnificent and wonderful this lodge is, lovingly and tastefully designed and creatively built by a couple of artists who realized the full potential of a site that is perched directly above the Yellowstone River. A few of the things that we loved about the lodge: the warm plank wood floors and large old log beams (recovered and reused from old barns), high ceilings, abundance of windows, solid wood vintage doors, hand crafted and sculpted chandeliers, light fixtures, and furniture. Each bathroom is a unique work of art, and the rooms are adorned with Shirl’s lovely paintings and John’s bronze sculptures. The kitchen had plenty of seating for our entire family reunion; enjoy cooking on the beautiful, massive gas stove, or grill on the large deck overlooking the river.

At night, we enjoyed sitting on the deck and taking in the superb views of the river below and Electric Peak above, watching all the rafters float by during the day, and stargazing at night, especially since we were lucky enough to vacation during the Perseid meteor shower. Anglers will be delighted by the excellent trout fishing available right on the banks of the property (with access to the entire bank of the river), where we caught native cutthroat, rainbows, and whitefish.

The lodge is conveniently located on the edge of the frontier town of Gardiner, an easy walk to all the local restaurants and rafting companies. You can also hop on the cruiser bikes that the owners make available for touring around town (just watch out for the elk that tend to wander through town). The accommodations are everything one would expect in a luxury vacation lodge, including comfortable beds, all the cooking and dishware a large family needs, plenty of towels, etc.

On our trip, Mom and Dad, who were celebrating their 50th anniversary, enjoyed sleeping in the screened-in “River House”, perched right on the river (below the main lodge), though you may decide to let the kids have an adventure and sleep there while the adults enjoy a bit of peace and quiet in the lodge above.

Of course, Gardiner is the gateway to the north side of Yellowstone Park, just minutes away from the Roosevelt arch, and about a half-hour away from the Lamar Valley, which we visited frequently to watch “The Druid” wolf pack in action.

We found this lodge to be perfect for our family reunion!

Owner's Response: Thank you for taking the time to give us such a glowing review - we SO appreciate it!

It's wonderful to hear when guests have such a fantastic family celebration at our lodge.... Spending a 50th anniversary in our River Bed is definitely a highlight for us! We're glad you all enjoyed the lodge's design, comfortable beds, amazing Yellowstone views and cruiser bikes too - with great fishing and stargazing as well.

That's why we do what we do - happy Yellowstone memories. You made our day. Hope to see you all again soon!
