|Minimum Stay||3 nights|
Villa Vista is a home away from home. This Mediterranean styled villa overlooks the enchanting Hodges bay and is nestled amidst the windswept fauna of Point Dubique on the east coast of Dominica. As its name suggests, it is a house of panoramic views of the Atlantic ocean, Hodges river as well as the majestic Mountain ranges of Morne Trois Piton and Morn Diablotin. Atlantic breezes refresh and inspire making this villa ideal for relaxation. In addition to the captivating views, you will delight in the pleasant sounds of the seasurf, parrots, seagulls, pelicans as well as the soothing melodies of the revitalizing winds that bless the villa.
This picturesque Villa Vista comprises two floors, the top floor housing the master bedroom and spa facilities. The ground floor has one and a half bathrooms and two bedrooms: a Queen-sized and two twin beds fondly called the green and blue rooms respectively. The kitchen is self-contained and outfitted with you in mind, to continue that home away from home experience. It comes complete with refrigerator, microwave, stove with oven, coffeemaker, and toaster. The living room is cosy with its bed/couch and flat screened television to keep you entertained- you may view a selection of local and foreign channels or just gaze at the beautiful scenery from this comfort zone. Or you may wish to recline on one of the deckchairs on the open terrace, engage in yoga or just swim in the revitalizing negative edged pool or just enjoy a good rum punch as you bask in the pool while gazing at the enthralling vista. If you like keeping fit, there is an invigorating walk or run down to the beckoning beach where you can engage one of the fishermen in conversation or just sit quietly alongside the rolling river or join in the relaxing art of fishing.
If you visit during the full moon, the nights will become your days and your nirvana. The upstairs master bedroom houses a king-sized bamboo bed, a hot tub and a pristine view of the land and seascape. All this can be enjoyed while you take a soothing soak in the villa’s Jacuzzi.
Villa Vista was built with you in mind, wireless/wifi to keep you linked with the rest of the world should you wish to remember that there is such a place, as the villa has a magical effect on all who enter. The many pictures were specially chosen to have you experience through visual impact our West Indian culture. All of them are by West Indians artists- Derek Walcott, Bosco Holder, Earl Etienne, Shalini to name a few; and depict aspects of our culture- cricket, carnival, our native Amerindians- the Kalinago of Dominica and the Garifuna of Belize, as well as our local dances (Bele).
Villavista is private enough for you to forget the world outside yet public enough for you to remember that Dominica is there to be explored. It is only a 20 minute drive from the airport-Melville Hall and is in close proximity to other well established guest houses. In the village of Calibishe, you can find quaint houses and shops and delectable eateries, also a mini winery to satisfy you. Calibishe is a quiet fishing village with warm, friendly people only too happy to help you experience the experience of a home away from home. It is also the home of red rocks, which add to the scenic quality of Villa Vista as well as the views all along the coast of Calibishe.
Yes, VillaVista is a vacation home, breathtaking, inspirational and the place to be if you are vacationing in the nature isle of Domincia. Vini, Come, experience this villa of vistas, VillaVista.
We stayed at Villa Vista for 12 days. The views from the decks are superb and the location is perfect. Its great getting up in the morning and watching the sun rise. Lots of birds to keep you company - hummingbirds galore. It’s great to go out on the deck at night and watch the stars. The Villa feels very private and one can easily melt into the raw beauty of Dominica…
The Villa is well-equipped and comfortable, with everything you could possibly need for a home away from home. The appliances are in good working order. It is great to have a BBQ available – bought fish from fisherman and cooked them on the BBQ. There is no air-conditioning however it was never needed as the breezes kept it comfortable.
Chris and Gweneth made our stay wonderful. Chris contacted us several times during our stay to ensure that everything was okay. The website for the Villa represents the Villa accurately.
The Villa is close (1 MILE) to the village of Calibishie – just for the exercise we walked to town every morning. There is a small grocery store in Calibishie to get the basics but need to go to Portsmouth/Picard for a wider choice of groceries. If you time it right in the morning you can bump into the roving bread truck to get fresh bread and pastries.
There are a few restaurants in town and POZ restaurant is a close 5-10 min walk without having to venture into town - loved the fig pie appetizer.
There are a few places to visit that are close by – Red Rock (Next Street after POZ), Batibou Beach (about 10 min drive – what a great lunch at the beach bar) and Number One Beach. Driving distances/times – I could never make Portsmouth in less than 40 minutes as the roads are full of twists/curves and elevation changes. It made diving a bit of a chore as you eat up 90+ minutes just getting back and forth. There is a copy of Bradts Dominica travel guide in the Villa. It was great to have it and in retrospect we should have had the guide before our visit so we could have better planned our trip as there is so much to see and do in Dominica.
We enjoyed our stay at the Villa very much.
This house is beautiful. I just wished my own house was this great. The master shower is awesome. The house is built so well and there is so much detail to the work in the quality of the house. The view from the house is worth a million bucks. It was so nice to BBQ and relax out there looking at the view. The location is in a quiet neighborhood with other nice houses.
There is a local cell phone at the house for your own personal use. You can go to many places to put minutes on it and it's inexpensive. Just bring the phone in to certain places that have the LIME sign on the outside. There is an awesome place for good and drinks within walking distance from the house called POZ for those who do not rent a car.
There are beautiful beaches in each direction from the house off the main road. There are some hiking places close by and a fairly new little tour very close to the house towards the south.
Would I book this place again? Most definitely. I wish I can go back next week. There is so much more we want to see and explore there.
Villa Vista is a clean, modern home in the NE section of Dominica -- more specifically in the village of Calibishie. And with the best view on the island, it's the place to stay! There is a continual breeze day and night, so it's great for private sunbathing and for fine sleeping weather.
The upstairs king bed is comfortable and the bathroom spacious. The neighborhood is quiet at night and you will be amazed by the starry sky. One cocktail hour while enjoying the upstairs terrace, in the distance we saw a whale breach three times. What an unexpected and delightful sight!
There is a nice grill for cooking fresh fish at dinner (buy at the Fisheries in Marigot) and the IGA in Portsmouth (a 30-minute drive) has a good selection of fresh vegetables. ... and, of course, with all the banana plantations at the north end, plenty of freshly picked bananas for breakfast.
Chris, the owner, and Gwyneth are both friendly and welcoming. There is very good internet for those wanting to stay connected.
The photos of this villa don't do it justice--not only will the view take your breath away, but the hospitality from the owner and property manager was fantastic. Callibishie is a great place, freindly, of course, and the stores and restaraunts are convenient.
Dominica is like no other place--the natural beauty is incredible, and the people are welcoming.
We've been home for a while, but my mind will remain there for some time...
Our stay was absolutely wonderful!!! The house was even more beautiful than we imagined it would be, and everything was very comfortable. The pictures do not do it justice. Also, Gweneth, the lady who looks after the house, was so nice and welcoming, and we really appreciated that Chris and she accommodated us when we were running late the day of our arrival. She also gave us great dining and activity advice.
One suggestion would be to perhaps get a small sound system. The only reason we even thought of it was because the house had virtually everything else we could have asked for.
My only other complaint is that staying in such a great house made leaving Dominica even more difficult. However, it made us even more determined to visit Dominica again, and we will certainly be staying at Villa Vista when we do.
My family (my wife and I along with our eight-year-old son) stayed here for a week and absolutely loved it!
The villa is outstanding: roomy and well appointed with spectacular views over the bay. The pool is not large (no laps here) but was perfect for cooling down in after a day's exploring.
What we liked best was the short walk down to the beach (steps down from the villa through the forest). The beach is at the confluence of the ocean and a river, allowing two different experiences. The ocean-side beach is reasonably well protected by an off-shore island, but there are still waves to play in (and, outside the protection of the island, we saw surfers). The river-side is cooler (at least when we visited) and provides a relaxing soak (getting off the salt water). The beach is wonderful for beachcombing and just wandering.
We visited in July and were worried about heat and insects, but there was no issue with either. The ocean breezes kept the villa cool throughout the day, and we even used a blanket at night (in July!). And there were no insect issues: the beds have mosquito netting, but we never used them and spent the week bite-free.
The Calibishi area is ideal for visiting with lots to do. We particularly liked the hike to Chaudiere Pool and the drive through Pennville to the Cold Sulpher Springs. A four-wheel-drive car rental is a must to really enjoy Dominica and those two trips will give the car a workout. On the less-adventurous side, our son (and us!) loved the paddle-boats through the mangrove forest just east of Calibishi.
There are small grocery stores in Calibishi but we should of done a shopping trip to Picard (south of Portsmouth) for more extensive provisions.
There are a number of places to eat in the area: we particularly liked Escape (a beach bar a five minute drive from the Villa), Bamboo at Calibishi Lodges (also a five minute drive away) and a new restaurant at Calibishi Gardens (very short drive or 5 minute walk).
Great communication from the owner, and Gwenneth does a wonderful job in ensuring that everything is going smoothly.
At the end of the week, we moved off to the Roseau area for the second week of our vacation. We wish we could have stayed a second week at Villa Vista instead!
