Special details about “The Naupaka Guest House” ~
The cottage-complex was originally built as a hostel, and so all bedrooms are separate from living areas and have separate entrances and keys. Although it is no longer run as a hostel, instead being rented out to only one group at a time, having all of the bedrooms in cottages separate from the living area cottage allows those who want to socialize (in the living/dining/kitchen areas or on the screened lanai) to be able to, while also allowing those who want to sleep, to sleep away from the living areas without being disturbed~
Groups truly appreciate that individual sleep schedules/needs can be met well under these circumstances! It is our most unique feature, and highly valued by guests...along with the much beloved full-body massage chair in the living room!
The four cottages house: a living room with attached screened lanai, a kitchen and dining room, two bathrooms, a laundry room, and 5 Hawaiian-themed bedrooms which sleep 10 (8 in regular beds and 2 on full-size futon). For larger groups, there is also a Queen-sleeper sofa in living room. We also have 2 twin air mattresses that can be used in some bedroom if preferred over using the sleeper sofa in the living room, or in addition to.
During its conversion into a vacation rental in 2011, along with Hawaiian décor touches, renovations made by us include new flooring, new stove/oven, new ceiling fans throughout, plus upgraded plumbing & electrical (all are to building code and permitted), plus the addition of child safety lattice, and an on-demand hot water system (hot water never runs out!).
Additionally, our water filtration system is commercial grade with UV – meaning safe to drink and wash in, and also meaning no need for you to buy bottled water!
The four cottages are connected by decking & railings, forming a small courtyard in the center that serves as a lovely meditation garden and joyful sight when you exit your room each morning before gathering for breakfast! The outside of the cottages are flanked by lush tropical landscaping ~ including a few fruit trees, yours for the picking when in season (oranges, limes, grapefruit, avocados and breadfruit).
Another feature guests particularly enjoy: the property attracts many birds, which you will hear singing throughout the daytime; and hosts a night-time coqui-frog chorus to lull you to sleep! Coquis are very small nocturnal frogs that live in surrounding foliage, and are found throughout the Big Island. You may never see one, but they have a very sweet mating call at night~
Here is how the bedrooms/cottages are arranged (see photos):
Two bedrooms, with private entrances off the courtyard and uniquely-keyed doors are located in their own cottage, along with one of two bathrooms. These rooms share an inside connecting door, which can be left locked or unlocked. These are Da Slippahs Room, the largest bedroom, and the smallest bedroom (Da Hula Room). Unlocking the connecting inside door converts these two rooms and bathroom into a lovely petite suite for a couple with young children~
The remaining 3 bedrooms are located across the little courtyard in their own cottage, again all with private and uniquely-keyed entrances. They include: The Aloha Shirt Room, The Na Lei Room and The Flowers Room. None of these rooms connect to any other rooms.
There is a full shower-bathroom combo in a third adjoining building. That second shared bathroom is only steps away from the 3 bedroom cottage, along decking illuminated safely with calm nighttime lighting and in a locale private enough to not wake others! The cottages' private laundry room is in the same building with the second bathroom, and features brand new state-of-the art machines (as of July, 2013).
Each of the bedrooms include a reading lamp, sitting area, radio and power surge protection outlet strip!
All guestroom key-rings include a key to the gate and one for the fourth attached building, which houses the kitchen, dining and relaxation areas ~ including a comfy family room, with its loveseat and queen-sized sleeper sofa plus a VERY popular full-body programmable massage chair, all right next to the adjoining screened lanai with wicker loveseat/coffee table and large patio table.
There are 2 eating areas; a dining room that seats 6, plus the very nearby screened lanai with its amply-sized patio table, with additional seating for 4. The living room and lanai coffee tables can accommodate two more for groups of 11-12 that may want to eat all at the same time. Additionally, for out-door food prep; there is a table in the nearby covered shed that can be pulled out for you for use next to the kettle BBQ!
For Web users: Wi-Fi is free and accessible throughout the property ~ no password required.
First aid kit, bug spray and flashlights, plus fire extinguisher are located in the kitchen. This is a SMOKE-FREE home. Smoking is only permitted if 20+ feet from buildings. NO exceptions...smoking nearby the building will result in loss of security deposit.
The EMS system in our area is via 9-1-1, with the closest EMS providers being only about 4 miles away. There is also an urgent care facility within 20 minutes, in the town of Keaau.
We live nearby in a small home, very privately located (not visible to renters) & one or the other or both of us remain available via land-line or cell phone for any type of help if need arises. We also have many friends in the subdivision. We have even had neighbors’ families stay with us~
After check-in, you’ll probably only see us when one of us walks along the drive to get the morning paper. We always encourage our renters to call us, though, for any reason!
Check out - 11AM; or by prior arrangement.
Check in - 3PM; or by prior arrangement.
Cancellation policy: 100% refund for any dates we are able to re-rent. We have only ever had one cancellation (a renter with a family emergency) and were able to re-rent and refund them in full.
If you've any additional info you'd like us to provide, please call or email us!

About Michael and Gina Miller
Michael has lived in the Hilo area since 1998. He grew up in the Santa Monica area of Los Angeles and attended Cal State SLO, where he received his undergraduate degree in electrical engineering and worked in high tech sales before making his move to island. He retrained into real estate sales and very much enjoys his current career as a Realtor, being very-well suited to the profession. He also owns a popular music store in Hilo (CDs, LPs, home and car audio), and plays guitar with his many musician friends in his spare time.
Gina began life in the Philadelphia area before moving with her family to the Los Angeles area at age 15. She attended UCLA for her undergrad degree and went to The University of Memphis for post-grad studies. She has previously worked as an elementary school teacher and assistant to developmentally disabled adults. After Tennessee, her life brought her to Oklahoma, Texas, Northern California, and finally Hawaii. She now works as primary manager of the guest house and takes care of our home and our two indoor kitty cats. In her spare time, she particularly enjoys swimming and reading.
Michael and Gina Miller purchased this house in 2010
Why Michael and Gina Miller chose Keaau
Location~! Naupaka Guest House abuts the Maku'u Forest Reserve, making for a quiet, private locale. It is still close enough to Hilo to not be 'out in the boonies,' and makes a nice home base for those who want to stay in one spot while making day trips on island~
What makes this house unique
This property's most unique feature is that it has all bedrooms in cottages separate from the cottage with the living areas which allows for maximum flexibility in sleep/socializing schedules for larger groups/families. It has also allowed us to keep our rates low for our smaller groups, as we open only those bedrooms needed~
