Owners Martin and Karen owned their first ranch in Templeton, CA. until 2001 when they purchased the world-renowned 'Hurdledale' from famous horse trainers Brian and Lisa Sabo. Once used as a pre-Olympic training site for 3-Day Eventing, they quickly fell in love with the property and decided to turn it into a human and horse retreat for all to share!
Karen purchased this barn in 2000
Because...you have to see it to believe it! The ranch is centrally located, and I went to college in San Luis Obispo and fell in love with the area and always wanted to return.
Karen was a great host. Ready for us on arrival, meeting us as we pulled up to the house. The ranch is beautiful! The view is wonderful, the covered porch is a great place to hang out and to have a lovely meal, including with a spinning serving circle in the center of the nicely proportioned round table. The wildlife and nighttime skies are all and more that we hoped for. So many birds - doves, woodpeckers, hawks, and more - horses, donkeys, mini ponies, goat, and squirrels , ground hogs etc.... Deer in the surrounding areas. Amazing nature! The bedrooms are nice, the wifi and cable tv worked well, and the bathroom and kitchen are clean and did the trick. We made two or three gourmet meals. The house is a portion of a partially repurposed stable. It was really cool to park our motorcycles in the stable ! The location is great in the west side of Paso Robles, adjacent to great vineyards, and an amazing ride east of the most beautiful Adeleida area. It's also an easy drive to Paso Robles town center, and near to a great breakfast diner at the Truck stop (seriously) that is one stop south on the 101. It's a lovely, rustic, special place, with amazing nature, location and world-class beauty all around you. Paul
our whole family really enjoyed our stay. the property is truly different from your usual vacation spot. it is a barn that was converted to a place to stay but all done with lot of taste and everything you need but still it is/was a barn with horses nearby ! our son (12) has one complaint : the creek has no fish, not sure if we should blame the drought or his home made fishing pole, anyway we all had a great time.
Four of us spent the weekend here and really enjoyed our stay. The property is beautiful and we loved seeing all the animals on the ranch. We were particularly fond of Sasha, one of the dogs who greeted us every morning and when we returned from wine tasting. She also visited us while we were grilling on the beautiful front porch, but I think an ulterior motive was at play. Shelley and Eric, tenants on the property, were very welcoming and told us to let them know if we needed anything. Oh, and just as the listing says, the beds were extremely comfortable. We would gladly stay at this super dog friendly home again.
My family (five of us, plus two dogs) stayed her for three days between Christmas and New Years, and everyone had a great time. Marty met us when we arrived and was a great host during our stay. The main barn was rustic, but very comfortable. The whole family enjoyed exploring the ranch and our two Golden Retrievers enjoyed going off-leash - exploring, running, chasing each other, and playing with Marty's dogs! We would love to do this again!
We just returned from out fantastic visit in Paso. We stayed at Karen and Marty's place outside of town. I almost hate to write a great review as I'd like this place to be "our secret"! :). We really enjoyed the setting and the hospitality. It is definitely a great alternative to a hotel! We will definitely be back.
A great ranch vacation on a wonderful Paso property! Every detail is taken care of, the owners even swung by to check on us and bring us local wine! We will come back.
This place was perfect for my surprise getaway for my boyfriend. I wanted to take him somewhere relaxing, remote and peaceful. This is exactly what we got - the deck is the best place to spend your time and drink a glass of wine at sunset. The sunset was absolutely beautiful! Karen wasn't there this weekend but was more than helpful and caring via phone and text. The bed was SO comfortable we want to buy the same mattress and sheets now! The bathroom is very nice and modern. Despite being an older building of course, and being within a barn, all the modern amenities are there. If you aren't okay with seeing a spider or bug every now and then, then maybe you should just stay in a hotel. But if you're looking for authentic ranch life in a remote location, this is it. The interior is decorated perfectly. Plus, we found a bottle of wine outside our door which was a nice touch! If you are looking for something with rolling green hills, then be warned that whilst it's beautiful and romantic, the scenery is dry and barren. Don't go out to dinner - your time is best spent on the amazing deck, eating a home cooked meal or snacks and a glass of wine of course! Also, the dogs near the main quarters were extremely friendly but be warned about the dogs near the first house on the property - they were pretty vicious - they should definitely be kept inside when there are ranch guests, in my opinion, as we wanted to see the goats and donkeys by the road but the dogs got in our way! Everything else was wonderful though. It spurred my boyfriend to say he would like to get married on a similar property/setting!
