Guilford House Rental Photos and Description

Island Home, 3 bedrooms, 2 bathrooms, sleeps 8, Beachfront Cabana

This recent Nantucket Shingle Style Waterfront Home is located on NARROWS ISLAND in Long Island Sound. The island is part of the archipelago known as the Thimble Islands. It is the only island of the Thimbles with a bridge, making it accessible by car as well as by boat. The property provides 360 degree water views. The home is one of only two residences on this four and a half (4.5) acre island.

The Island is the perfect place for you, your family and your friends to enjoy a vacation with spectacular views and amenities.

Wake to a spectacular sunrise. Dine on the front deck and watch the boats sailing by. Enjoy the hundreds of flowers. Lounge in the large granite beachfront cabana while experiencing the fabulous views of the Thimbles. Explore an uninhabited island or sun, swim, fish or kayak from either of the two(2) private beaches just a step away.

At the end of the day, take in unsurpassed sunsets while soaking in the 7 person private hot tub.

For the boater, there is direct water access from the private floating dock and use of a mooring in the secluded cove.

The central air-conditioned home offers beautiful hardwood floors and stone tiles. It is furnished with nautical antiques and casual elegance. There are three (3) spacious bedrooms; 2 with additional sleeping lofts above. The main bath has a shower and a whirpool tub. The great room has a two-story high ceiling with plenty of room for conversation, TV, music or games and puzzles.

If you can pull yourself away from this island retreat for a time, you may want to cruise the Thimble Islands on a tour boat or venture into town to the Historic Guilford Green. The green is lined with wonderful boutique shopping, jewelry stores, spa, gourmet coffee, ice cream and chocolate shop, galleries, restaurants, library and classic antique homes. We provide a detailed Guest Directory with local menus and brochures.

If you desire a longer jaunt, then try a short drive to shop the designer outlets of Clinton, tour the Yale Campus in New haven, play golf at a local course, hike the grounds of the Gillette Castle or visit Mystic Seaport. In the evening you may cruise the Connecticut River from Essex or try your luck at Foxwoods Casino or Mohegan Sun.

Situated in the geographical center of the Northeast, Guilford is just a short ride from New York, Boston, Hartford and Providence using either I-95 or the Shore Line Train. The Island is less than five miles from the train station and conveniently located for travel to major airports: New York - 1 1/2 hours, Hartford - 1 hour, Providence - 1 hour, Boston - 2 hours, and New Haven - 15 minutes.

We have many guests return each year to view the splendor and enjoy the relaxation.

We invite you to come and see our beautiful island !

Please note that the property is not suitable for wedding events or large celebrations.

Narrows Island

  • 5 of 5

My wife and I have been going to Narrows Island for the past several years. We live busy lives and always look forward to spending time at this spot. It is a beautiful place that is private, quiet, and relaxing. Great for the two of us (and our dog) and family / friends who stop by to visit. Owner is always very accommodating and friendly. As I sit here and write this, I can't stop thinking about going back next year.

Owner's Response: We always try to accomodate our guests. We appreciate that this great couple enjoyed the privacy and relaxation while their dog enjoyed the open space. Thanks for coming to Narrows Island for the last several years and for rebooking early for 2013. And again for 2014!

Spectacular Property, Totally Undiscovered !

My husband and I rented this special place in August, 2011 with our children. In our opinion it is one of the best properties on the Connecticut Shore. The house was immaculate when we arrived and the outside grounds were well maintained. We spent most of the time outside, particularly at the cabana or at the beaches. The house has central air-conditioning though you generally don't need it. Great vacation !

Fabulous Family Private Retreat, Friends Too!!

My husband and I with our 2 kids, aged 6 and 8 ,shared this fabulous island with my sister and her husband. The house was very clean and had all the new conveniences. If you need anything, the owner is a quick phone call away and is very helpful. We would Kayak from the beach (there are 2 small beaches) out to an island just offshore with picnic table and chairs. Our children were thrillled to find small crabs, shells and sea glass on the beaches. We chose the property do to it's convenience to our home and had friends with their kids and family come for the day. We spent most of the time in the stone cabana and grilled out some lobsters for dinner. Our friends came by with their boat and took us fishing and touring the Thimble Islands. What a terrific time!!

Owner's Response: One of the fun activities for kids is to find shells, small rock crabs, sea glass and an occasional buoy. Nice folks. We are happy that your family and friends had a wonderful time!

Gorgeous Property Pictures Don't Do It Justice --Perfect High End Summer Rental

  • 5 of 5

My wife and I rented this property for the month of July 2009 with our one year old son and family guests. I have to say it is nothing short of amazing. It is one of two homes on a tiny island connected to the mainland by a bridge so there is a great deal of privacy. Views are breath taking of the Long Island Sound and watching the sunsets here is really an activity one cannot miss. Two separate private beaches provide excellent ocean activity. I would wake up early and with my morning coffee watch the cranes fishing in the shallows. In addition to the house there is this cabana on the property perfect for entertaining and relaxing and has a bathroom wth shower, fridge, radio and ac outlets and bbq. Owner stops by every few days so if you have questions or need anything he is quick to help. House is new construction and in excellent shape and was given to us ultra clean. You won't want to leave the property but if you get the urge the quaint Guilford City Center is a short 15 minute car ride away. Our little guy was a morning riser so breakfast in town at this amazing little diner was a regular activity. City hosts lots of activities on the town green and we took in an antique fair as well as a children's concert during our stay. The only negative is that there is only one full bath in the main house so if you have a lot of people you will need to coordinate shower times, etc. A bath on the ground floor helps alleviate potty traffic.

Wonderful Private Getaway

  • 5 of 5

My husband and I stayed here as part of our honeymoon in 2010 and had a great time. We were looking for some place that would be quiet, romantic, private and right on the water and this delivered all that. The house is very well maintained and has great "New England Beach House" charm while still being modern and up to date. I think this property would work best for small groups as there is only one shower and the kitchen area is small. Perfect for the two of us and fine for when some family came to visit for the day. Not that you'll want to spend much time inside - between the stone cabana area, the back deck chairs/hammock and small beaches on both sides of the island, you'll want to spend all your time outside enjoying the sun, the nice calm water and watching the various sea birds. After spending the day in the sun, you can cook up some dinner on the nice gas grill, then relax and watch the sunset from the jacuzzi. If you're looking for rowdy parties and happening nightlife - this area isn't for you. But for a nice quiet vacation to hang out in a beautiful private spot - this is great. We didn't want to leave!

All that glitters is not gold

  • 1 of 5

My wife and I, and my four adult daughters, came to stay the last week of July 2011. The house was chosen for its setting [a beautiful island] and location near transportation. Both of those objectives were fulfilled. It is truly a beautiful place. That’s the positive side of this review.

I will describe the house, so you are not fooled by the pictures. It is the most poorly designed house we have ever rented. The kitchen is too narrow, so when people are sitting at the table, you can barely walk behind them or open a cabinet drawer or refrigerator. It is situated on the ground floor, next to a bathroom, and is the only room on that floor. You go upstairs to a “great room,” which has the best space and feel to it. The two bedrooms off the great room are very small. Each has a loft that is reached by a rather steep ladder. The loft beds are shorter and made for children only. The only bathroom on that floor is off the hall that heads toward a small “master” bedroom.

The house and property are poorly maintained. The screens in the house are filled with dirt and dust. A screen door to a balcony we opened ONCE!, came apart because it had rotted away at the bottom. The cabana, which is where we spent most of our time, has holes in the ceiling where wasps have built their nests. If the wind isn’t blowing, there are biting flies. The cabana has a cold water shower and toilet. It is reminiscent of a bathroom you’d find at the back of a gas station, without the graffiti but with all of the ambience. We sat in an Adirondack chair that came apart. The kitchen was infested with ants. The water system, which was described by the “trustee” as being “good well water”, failed on our last day. During our stay, the toilet bowl refilled with a yellow colored water. This was the same water that we used for our dishes!

While there, the omnipresent “trustee”, who lives 200 yards away, asked us if he could conduct a tour while we were there, which we felt obliged to say yes to, which felt like a bit of an invasion of our privacy.

When it came time to return our damage deposit, we were charged for the “damage” to the rotted screen door, a “missing” refrigerator bin, which wasn’t there when we arrived, and 2 hours of cleaning for “marks on the walls and candle dripping on a grill cover”. He graciously did not charge us for cleaning the iron stains left in the sinks and toilets by the water.

Bottom line; beautiful spot, but horrible house and management

Owner's Response: We are happy to report that in the past 5 years we have had more than 50 guests that have had the time of their lives vacationing on the island. We have been fully booked each summer with many guests returning each year. Everyone enjoys the privacy and says that the photos do not do it justice. The house(Circa 2005)and property are well maintained. We spend 2 months in the spring of each year painting, washing windows, landscaping, general maintenance, cleaning and planting hundreds of flowers. Each week the house is cleaned by our Professional Cleaners. 12 Days after this group left they emailed us stating that they had a "Wonderful Week"...there were no complaints. However upon their departure our Professional Cleaners entered the house and found the house to need excessive cleaning. A recently painted screen door, that had been functioning all summer, had been literally broken off the hinges, causing damage to the door frame as well. We reluctantly deducted the repair costs and extra clean-up from the damage deposit. At this point the renters did not want to pay for the damages and came up with various complaints from a loose screw on an adirondack chair to a bumble bee in the beachfront cabana. The complaints are without merit. We do agree however that the sleeping and inside dining arrangements for the 3 Bedroom House were not designed to accommodate a party of their size, consisting of the couple, 4 adult daughters and their boyfriends. We invite you to come and see our beautiful island for will be delighted!
