Large 1974 house in spacious garden, six bedrooms plus sofa bed, two kitchens, two bathrooms. If you like water sports, this location can't be beaten. Water ski in the morning, hobiecat before lunch, windsurf in the afternoon. Very safe for kids, clean sandy beaches with bath-warm freshwater lake 5 miles long by 3-ish across. Washing machine, dishwasher, two fridges (one double door with ice maker) tv & dvd plus dvd 'library' but you'll rarely need it. Hot during the day, never too hot to sleep at night and few insects. 400 inhabitants in thie village, 55 minutes due south of Bordeaux towards Biarritz. Apart from eating and playing on the beach the activities at your door are water sports, golf, etc: surfing is on the coast, 10 miles away. This is much quieter than most areas, situated in the middle of the Foret de Landes, with wonderful farmers markets and local restaurants. Maison du Lac is 100 metres from the sandy beach of the Lac de Parentis, a fresh water lake which is 35 square kilometres and 10 km from the coast. It is an ideal location for a safe sailing holiday or watersports of any kind (except jet-skis). Water-skiing, hobiecats, windsurfing, kitesurfing, dinghy sailing. The local beaches run 200km from Bordeaux to Biarritz. Spain is only 1.5 hours away, the wine territory of Bordeaux and Medoc a similar distance. Golf, fishing, pony-trekking, whitewater rafting, cycling and eating are all local activities. Gastes is a 45 minute drive from Bordeaux airport, 90 minutes from Biarritz, and the same to Spain. It is a comfortable drive down from St Malo, Caen or Le Havre, and is a full day's drive from Calais, Dunkirk or Cherbourg. The beach is literally a 3 minute walk from the house without crossing a road. Gastes is close to Mimizan, Biscarosse, Arcahon, Contis Plage, Mont de Marsan and is 5 miles from Parentis which has supermarkets.

  • On agreeing a booking, we will ask you to complete a booking form and send us a cheque for 35% down payment in order to secure the booking. This is non-refundable and you may want to take out cancellation insurance to cover this. The balance is payable not later than 60 days before your arrival date. We reserve the right to re-let the house if the balance is not paid by this date. A deposit of Euro 500 against damage and leaving the villa in an unacceptable state is payable with the final balance. This will be returned within two weeks of your departure less any deductions due. Prices are inclusive of normal usage of electricity and water. Double and single duvets and pillows are provided, as well as bed linen and towels. End of stay property cleaning is not included and guests will be expected to return a clean villa on departure.

  • There are two bedrooms downstairs, both with French doors leading out to the rear garden. Bedrooms are simply furnished and intended to be cool - there are roll-down shutters on all windows to keep out the sun. There are two sets of bunk beds upstairs.

Notes: There is a second small kitchen upstairs with units, a sink, a hob and oven. Upstairs is reached via a spiral staircase. There is a large verandah on the front of the house where most summer evenings are spent, and where breakfast can stretch into lunch. There is plenty of space for parking, and the large garden is surrounded by a fence that we believe is dog-proof. Animals are welcome in our house! Maison du Lac is a family house which we rent out, rather than being just a rental property, so please look after our things. It has its own site at - french lakehouse. You can amble from the house to the beach without crossing any roads, and without any shoes. The beach cafe can be hard to pass at the end of the day, and is a great place to have a simple lunch. The beach has a lifeguard during the season, and the water is very shallow for almost 100 metres; its also about 22 degrees throughout the summer. Nearby: golf, cycling, pelota, flying boats, fishing, kite surfing, markets & wine.

Watersports: The lake averages 22 degrees in the summer and the weather allows for water skiing, dinghy sailing, kite and windsurfing at different times of the day. The beaches are sandy and the water is very gently shelving and safe for children. Swimming is supervised by a lifeguard during the summer. The beaches of Mimizan and Biscarosse are 20/30 minutes away and have magnificent body-boarding surf. If surfing is your thing, the World Championship site at Hossegor is an hour away, just north of Biarritz. If you are a dinghy sailor, various world championships have been held here, and you can hang on a trapeze wire for a three mile reach...without waves and in warm water. Leave your wetsuits at home. There is no pool at Maison du Lac simply because the lake provides all you could ever want; there are plenty of small private sandy beaches around the water's edge, and this area is never crowded. Most holiday-makers are French, and there is an English campsite 3 kms through the forest with pools

Round about and nearby: Spain is an hour away, due south, and the mountains of the Pyrenees. Bordeaux is 45 minutes up the road, surrounded by arguably the finest wine growing regions on the planet. Pony trekking is available, the village is in the middle of the vast forest - la Foret de Landes - and is criss-crossed by trails and paths. Everyone cycles down here, and the house has a number of bikes for your use. Fishermen are mad about the lake, and during the quiet season the bird-watchers are everywhere. There is even hunting in the forest - deer, pheasant and wild boar.
