Located just north of The University of Texas, this modern studio showcases how green building can coexist with an historic landmark, the Fruth House. Designed as a photography gallery, creative use of space achieves a spacious feeling. Completed in February 2012, it incorporates “green building” concepts: LED lights, solar panels, efficient heating/AC, and tankless water heater. A queen-sized Murphy bed, fully-equipped kitchen, and comfy furnishings on a century-old reclaimed wood floor provide visitors with a home base to explore Austin. Approximately 450 sq. ft. of air conditioned space plus a 70 sq. ft balcony with chairs and table. Centrally-located, guests can catch the UT shuttle (75 yards), or walk to UT (1 mile), Central Market, and nearby restaurants along the “Drag” (Guadalupe) and in Hyde Park; we are near several hospitals (Austin Heart, Seton, St. David’s, University Medical/Brackenridge, and Dell Children’s) and the Capitol. UT scholars, visitors, sports fans, athletes (especially rowers!) and live music aficionados—all are welcome to enjoy our Gallery House.

Murphy Bed note: This is a NORMAL QUEEN size bed. It is just stored vertically. It rests on a 155 lb. substantial frame and is in no way similar to a skinny fold out bed from a couch. It is made by the original Murphy Bed Company in Farmingdale, NY, the same way it has been made for the past 70 years.

No pets. No exceptions.

Not suitable for young children as there is no 'safety gate' for the entry to the stair well.

About Rice Jackson

Rice is a professional photographer, he may be found at: terra360.com. Also on Twitter @terra360. His wife Pam Bell is an educator at The University of Texas. As time goes on, the new apartment will be filled with photographs. Pam has lived in the neighborhood for 40 years. We both think it is one of the best places to be in Texas. Rice Jackson built this apartment in 2012.

Why Rice Jackson chose Austin

Pam came to the University of Texas for her first studies, and after her post graduate work and degrees she stayed in Austin. The original home was built in 1925. The garage with it's new apartment above was finished in 2012. Constructed from the ground up with exterior architecture in keeping with the style of the old historic home. Inside the apartment is very modern and efficient. The only old touch are the almost century old floors reclaimed from a beer warehouse in Fort Worth, Texas.

What makes this apartment unique

The apartment is super well insulated and has a high efficiency 18,000 BTU heat pump for heating and cooling. A tankless water heater supplies all the hot water you can possibly use. A small but well organized and equipped kitchen with a counter top convection oven/microwave, 2 burner stove top, with a standard size refrigerator next to the sink. The bed is a very comfortable, brand new queen size mattress, that just happens to store vertically (Murphy bed!) to make maximum use of the space. I have traveled a lot and tried to put everything into this space that a visitor could possibly want. The Panasonic smart TV is connected to my Pandora Radio, Netflix, and Amazon Prime accounts for your listening and viewing pleasure. All the local broadcast HD TV channels are available as well. Centrally located between MoPac (Loop 1) and Interstate-35, we have access easily to both in five minutes.

I can't say enough about this darling rental!

The owners, Rice and Amy have done a great job on this rental! They have thought of everything a traveler might need and more. It was my husband and I and we had plenty of space. Having the bathroom sink outside the shower/toilet area was so convenient. The bed was great and such a cool idea being able to be tucked away during the day, yet the curtain provided privacy from the rest of the apartment if you needed it to. For a small space, we never stumbled over each other, even when there were four of us there. We enjoyed the balcony during the day as well as in the evening. The location was very convenient for us as it was close to where our son lives. We are eager to stay again on our return trip next March! Thanks again, Chip and Laura

Gallery House

I had an excellent stay at the Gallery House. This is an extremely clean guest house. There is nothing you would need that is not in the property. However, if you find something you need Rice and Pam will deliver it to you. The property is, private, clean, safe, and comfortable. The Murphy bed is incredible as well. Perfect for a family of three. Please, if you are planning on staying here treat this property as your own, keep is a nice as it is!

Lovely Modern Studio Stay

My husband and I stayed in this modern, cozy studio for 6 days of vacation in December. The accommodations and Rice’s hospitality definitely provided for a wonderful first visit to Austin! We’ve used vrbo on several occasions in the past, but Rice’s communication skills, sincere excitement for Austin, and incredibly thoughtful set-up out-shined our past experiences. The studio itself had excellent amenities such as a comfortable Murphy bed, heated bathroom, covered parking, wifi, and Netflix just to name a few. Rice also has TWO binders full of places to visit while in Austin, not to mention great suggestions for restaurants if you ask. We took his advice and walked to a nearby Tex-Mex restaurant, Trudy’s, and enjoyed some delicious fajitas and margaritas. The central location of the studio facilitates walking/biking/driving to most any Austin activities we had planned. I would highly recommend staying here to anyone thinking about visiting Austin. I know we’ll be staying there the next time we return!

Sanity for Rent

If you need to gather yourself away from chaos, here's an ideal destination. Prep the coffee-pot before you hit the hay in the oh-so-comfortable Murphy bed (the owners have left pre-ground coffee for you), take a walk or run around the old-Austin neighborhood or through UT, come on 'home' to Gallery House and shower up with hot water that never runs out. Everything you need at your fingertips. Including reading material.

  • The vanity lavatory is located just outside the bath that encloses the toilet and shower. The enclosed bath, aside from LED lighting, is illuminated by glass panels on two walls (frosted glass on the pocket door) and 'reed' glass on the south wall of the shower and toilet area. The bath, like the rest of the unit, is supplied by a continuous on-demand tankless water heater.

  • Queen size Beds (1) The Murphy bed is hidden behind a fabric cover, which when open, forms a 'wall' to the bedroom space. The Murphy bed is adjacent to the wardrobes, lavatory, and bath. It can be lowered with two fingers by the owner, so it is very easy and very comfortable. The bed has a gel top on the comfortable mattress to make it even more appealing. It is like any other normal queen bed, it just happens to be stored vertically. Feather (2) and synthetic (2) pillows are provided., Murphy Beds (1) A vertically stored Murphy bed by the original manufacturer in New York. It has not changed in 70 years. Very easy to use, and it is a every bit a normal queen size bed. It just happens to be stored vertically for efficiency of space.

Notes:
The kitchen is equipped with a GE convection oven/microwave. A counter top unit that is a convection oven (up to ~450 deg.) and a microwave. The kitchen does not have a built in oven. Netflix streaming video, and Pandora radio available via Smart TV. No cable TV, but high quality over-the-air broadcast HD is wired into the building, plus HBO NOW, Netflix & Amazon Prime TV/movies.. There is an Ethernet plug by the bed, but the wireless high speed broadband is very robust (and secured). Typically wifi speeds over 120Mbps both directions. We are located close to public bus routes. 1/2 block to the UT shuttle & CapMetro buses on Speedway, and 2 blocks to routes on Guadalupe. No parties please. There is a City of Austin noise ordinance in effect after 10 p.m. Smoking is not permitted on the grounds or in the apartment.
