Why stay at a hotel when you can walk to the beach from this adorable home on a quiet street, two walkable miles from downtown Portland? Pet friendly and easy to rent and access, this home offers the ideal jumping off spot for a perfect Maine vacation. Everyone that walks through the door of this meticulously renovated bungalow falls in love with its charm. There's a hammock and porch swing to lounge in, BBQ, beautiful Japanese Garden and fenced in backyard. There are Skylites throughout the house and lots and lots of windows to throw open for that fresh Maine sea breeze. Home is within walking distance of Portland's best bakery, three local handmade ice cream shops, the area's most dog friendly beach and one of Portland's most popular restaurants. Bring your bikes, you'll be riding all over for the local eats!

Kitchen is fully stocked with every kitchen utensil a chef could want, including both a french press and a regular coffee maker, toaster, microwave, blender, pots for cooking lobster, cocktail bar area, crockpot, etc. If you are curious about something specific, just ask! Home has been thoughtfully furnished with a warm, stylish mix of antiques and more contemporary furniture. About Maggie Birlem

Hi! My name is Maggie and welcome to the little red bungalow! I'm in my late 30s and my family comes many, many generations from Maine on both sides - my mom from a long line of dairy farmers and my father from generations of sea captains and fishermen. He was the first generation NOT born on Cranberry Island. Instead, he was born in the bustling village of Southwest Harbor on Mount Desert Island. I myself am a builder and designer and the little red bungalow is my version of heaven.

Why Maggie Birlem chose Portland

Why this property? Well, have you ever just walked through a door and thought, can there be a more perfect house than this? I've designed and built many welcoming spaces but this one is my favorite and I will own it for the rest of my life! I LOVE sharing this home with travelers and nothing makes me happier than reading the guest book after you leave! As many guests have commented, it truly is a 'slice of heaven' and while I'm sure I'm biased, the reviews are not! Please come visit!

What makes this bungalow unique

There is a lot that made me fall in love with this house. From walking up the stone walkway out front through the amazing landscaping, to stepping up on the fir wood of the front porch and swinging on the porch swing that my dad made me, to launching myself into the hammock in the front yard, I don't even have to step through the front door to feel like I'm home. I no longer live there but I could never sell this little oasis. Portland is an amazing town to visit and this house is a perfect spot to just setting in to and relax - whether you're looking for some downtime away from your own home or if you're here for a wedding or looking a place to vacation or just want a warm, welcoming, well-designed house to escape to for movie watching, cooking and resting - this is the spot! The clawfoot tub under the skylite helps too :)

Portland, ME is the perfect destination for an all-around Maine vacation! Just a couple of short, walkable miles into downtown, the house is situated within walking distance of a number of beaches and within a very short drive of some of the larger beaches in southern Maine. Portland won foodiest city last year by Bon Appetit so there is no shortage of amazing restaurants and cafes to enjoy. You can sail, deep sea fish or just take a leisurely ferry ride on the mail boats out of the Old Port. Local attractions include some of Maine's best beaches, amusement parks, outlet shopping in Freeport (including LL Bean) and lots of museums and sightseeing in Portland.

There are many local public golf courses in the area that are beautiful and affordable. Also, take some time to visit the most photographed lighthouse in Maine, which is just one walkable mile from the house. There are too many local ice cream shops, bakeries, breweries, coffee shops, cafe's and wine bars to mention!

There are also quite a few different ski/ snowboard mountains within an easy drive of Portland, as well as numerous groomed cross-country ski areas as well. You can venture out for the day and drive up to Boothbay to see the amazing botanical gardens and walk through the quaint village, or even up to Camden to visit the Farnsworth Museum, which features Andrew Wyeth's original works.

I have quite a few possible day trips and itineraries in a binder at the house. Of course there's also lots of information on the best places to get lobster - don't worry!

Wonderful home in a super location!

We could not have picked a better place to stay while visiting Portland for the first time. It is located in a nice neighborhood, close to a pet friendly beach and within walking distance to stores and among beautiful sites. Portland is just a few minutes drive. The home is welcoming and it was difficult to leave. Everywhere I looked I found a beautiful detail, the backyard is private and peaceful. There is something special about spending time at this home. The homeowner is very sweet and accommodating. She has not missed anything. It truly felt like spending time at a best friend's home!!!. Thank you Maggie !. I hope I can come back someday...

Great place!

I heard the term "bungalow" and envisioned a small, cozy place. However, this place is very spacious and comfortable! Location is great and very convenient to heading in any direction and near airport, highways, etc. Plenty of parking. The two bedrooms are upstairs with a spacious bathroom and downstairs is a half bath. The kitchen was very well set up with everything you would need if you wanted to cook. The living room was very comfortable with a gas fireplace that was a perfect balance to the weather. The home is located in a neighborhood and the neighbors were pleasant. Since it was snowing we weren't able to take advantage of the outdoor amenities, but I could envision that the backyard it a great place to hang out in the summer. The home is very clean and beautifully decorated. The owner is very helpful and pleasant. This was the perfect place for our vacation to see snow.

Charm Central

Finding the Little Red Bungalow was a stroke of luck. It's just the right size for one or two couples, it's situated conveniently between downtown Portland (for city stuff!) and Cape Elizabeth (for gazing pensively at the sea!), it has Roku and a push-of-the-button fireplace (two amenities of my ideal Friday night), and is wall-to-wall adorable (featuring decor with "stealth charm," ie understated awesomeness that's durable for being always around but never intrusive). A friendly cat sometimes appears out the window (we called him Brendan). We couldn't stop taking pictures of the place but never quite captured it's je-ne-sais-quoi specialness. Come stay. You'll feel perfectly at home here as we did. We left with memories aplenty and a determination to return. Plus Maggie, the owner, is the bomb.

Exceeded every expectation!

To say that this house exceeded my expectations would be a huge understatement.
I was looking for a cozy place to call home for 12 days with my 6 year old son and my boyfriend who is about to leave on military duty.

Not only is the house even more adorable than the photos - but the owner went above and beyond to ensure we had the most amazing stay. We were guests just before the holidays. Not only did she provide a Christmas tree for our family to decorate together, but a gingerbread house and a surprise for my son as well. From the booking process to arrival, through the duration of our stay and checkout - Maggie's sweet, friendly disposition made the entire process smooth and hassle-free.

I travel extensively for both work and pleasure, and this sweet bungalow was by far my favourite 'home away from home'.

The house was amazingly clean, the location ideal, and the area quiet and safe.
Her home is stocked with just about everything you can think of. From spices and kitchen supplies, magazines, games, books and music library, we hardly felt the need to leave the house.

I can't wait to plan our next trip to Maine and to this great place - where I feel like we will welcomed like family, and treated like friends.

Thanks Maggie for providing the perfect setting for some amazing memories.

A Slice of Heaven

This "bungalow" was just beautiful and comfortable in every way. Every amenity you could think of was offered. The decor was charming and relaxing, we had such a wonderful weekend there with our dog. A time we will forever cherish and always remember.
Maggie our host is very warm and kind, type of person you rarely meet in this lifetime.
We would definitely return this "slice of heaven."
