|Minimum Stay||3 - 7 nights|
If you can't find the dates you want, try our other two rentals in the same neighborhood (they are also fully booked for the summer though). They are also adorable and close to the beaches (listings #3684592 and #3723457). They are new listings and are decorated in the same style as the bungalow!
Beautiful bungalow, lots of skylights, wide pine floors, open floor plan, big stone gas fireplace, Japanese garden, chef's kitchen, washer/ dryer, well stocked and cozy. Why stay at a hotel when you can walk to the beach from this adorable home on a quiet street, two walkable miles from downtown Portland? Pet friendly and easy to rent and access, this home offers the ideal jumping off spot for a perfect Maine vacation. Everyone that walks through the door of this meticulously renovated bungalow falls in love with its charm. There's a hammock and porch swing to lounge in, BBQ, beautiful Japanese Garden and fenced in backyard. There are Skylites throughout the house and lots and lots of windows to throw open for that fresh Maine sea breeze. Home is within walking distance of Portland's best bakery, three local handmade ice cream shops, the area's most dog friendly beach and one of Portland's most popular restaurants. Bring your bikes, you'll be riding all over for the local eats!
Want to bring your baby? Not a problem! We've traveled with ours too and what a nightmare hauling all of that STUFF! We have a pack and play, high chair, toys, etc. Please be aware that the stairs are not baby-friendly and it's very important to know this before arrival (although we've never had any complaints or issues, I just like to be very clear about it).
Kitchen is fully stocked with every kitchen utensil a chef could want, including both a french press and a regular coffee maker, toaster, microwave, blender, pots for cooking lobster, cocktail bar area, crockpot, etc. If you are curious about something specific, just ask! Home has been thoughtfully furnished with a warm, stylish mix of antiques and more contemporary furniture. The artwork has been thoughtfully placed and the house is stocked with fresh, new bed linens and towels. Please let us know if you are curious about any particular details of the house.
Hi! My name is Maggie and welcome to the little red bungalow! I'm in my late 30s and my family comes many, many generations from Maine on both sides - my mom from a long line of dairy farmers and my father from generations of sea captains and fishermen. He was the first generation NOT born on Cranberry Island. Instead, he was born in the bustling village of Southwest Harbor on Mount Desert Island. I myself am a builder and designer and the little red bungalow is my version of heaven.
Maggie Birlem purchased this bungalow in 2004
Why this property? Well, have you ever just walked through a door and thought, can there be a more perfect house than this? I've designed and built many welcoming spaces but this one is my favorite and I will own it for the rest of my life! I LOVE sharing this home with travelers and nothing makes me happier than reading the guest book after you leave! As many guests have commented, it truly is a 'slice of heaven' and while I'm sure I'm biased, the reviews are not! Please come visit!
There is a lot that made me fall in love with this house. From walking up the stone walkway out front through the amazing landscaping, to stepping up on the fir wood of the front porch and swinging on the porch swing that my dad made me, to launching myself into the hammock in the front yard, I don't even have to step through the front door to feel like I'm home. I no longer live there but I could never sell this little oasis. Portland is an amazing town to visit and this house is a perfect spot to just setting in to and relax - whether you're looking for some downtime away from your own home or if you're here for a wedding or looking a place to vacation or just want a warm, welcoming, well-designed house to escape to for movie watching, cooking and resting - this is the spot! The clawfoot tub under the skylite helps too :)
This is it. If you are even considering this home, book it now! After this epic winter of snow storms, my family( 2 adults, a 3 year old & a dog) just needed a change in scenery & very spontaneously contacted Maggie. She was nothing short of accommodating & such a pleasure to get to know. You will feel immediately at home in this beautiful place & will fall in love with Portland. Maggie has done an exceptional job creating a family & pet friendly home to live in when you're away from home. Everything you need is there & it is beyond clean. It felt more like we were staying at a friends' house, rather than a rental. We are looking forward to coming back in the warmer months & exploring more of what Portland has to offer. I would recommend this (or any of her other properties) very highly!
This bungalow is absolutely adorable, comfortable, and well appointed. You will not be disappointed! For those of you that tend to gravitate toward the kitchen - it is terrific - high end appliances and lots of counter space. The bedrooms are welcoming and the shared spaces even more so. We did not want for anything.
Our host was very helpful - from an excellent brunch recommendation to covering the more mundane, but necessary, details. The home was clean and well maintained.
Maggie warned us we would want to come back... and she was spot-on in that regard too!
Although it has been almost one year since we stayed at this adorable bungalow, it is still on my mind because my time there was so memorable in every way. But especially memorable because I felt at home from the moment I arrived.
Maggie's house is a welcoming and cozy retreat. It has been tastefully renovated, it is clean, nicely decorated and it has every amenity that a traveler could want. There is a cooks kitchen, a comfortable living room with a gas fireplace, a half bath and laundry room on the first floor, two cozy bedrooms upstairs, another bathroom with a great shower and bathtub, and nice outdoor spaces. The house is located nearby restaurants & shops, a beach to stroll on, a beautiful light house with views of the sea and is a short distance from a great yoga studio — a necessity for us! Downtown Portland is just a short drive with all its wonderful places to eat and shop.
Thank you Maggie for building this house. I can't wait to stay there again!
My husband & I are so grateful that we were able to enjoy this beautiful home. It is exactly as described: wonderfully decorated, clean and inviting. The house was well-stocked with everything we needed. It was a pleasure to come home from our daily excursions and just sit on the front porch and enjoy the quiet and cool evening breezes with our 12 year old lab.
The home is in a great location with friendly neighbors on either side. We were able to walk to the beach, Scratch's bakery and Willard Scoops for ice cream. The city of Portland is a 5 minute ride and has many places to shop and eat. We ate most of our meals out because we have never been to Maine and wanted to experience it all. Becky's is an old retro diner that served really good breakfasts. Gritty's was a good place to enjoy a beer and sandwich after browsing and shopping in the city. We loved Shipyard Brewery and the Lobster House where we had the best wild blueberry ale on draft! Bug Light Park and Fort Williams ( the best lobster rolls ever) were fun outings also. We really had a hard time leaving this beautiful state and I have to say that Maggie was a delight to deal with. We hope to be there again soon.
Maggie's house was perfect. So clean and airy and well-done from the swing on the front porch to the fire pit in the backyard. The appliances were all very high end and I especially appreciated the huge and attractive washer and dryer in the laundry room. The neighborhood was great for walking or bike-riding. My granddaughters (3 & 6) loved the hammock in the front yard. Around the corner was the delicious Terra Cotta Pasta that has pasta and much more. Also got hooked on Netflix, which I don't have at home. Two weeks wasn't long enough. Can't wait to return.
Our family of three (two seniors and a pooch) spent a wonderful week in the little red bungalow. Daily walks to Scratch and some time on Willard Beach were augmented with evenings on the fenced in patio area. Exploring the area from Black Point Inn north to Casco bay and a day on water with friends were other highlights. We are glad we had a night light with us as the bedroom ceilings are challenging at 3 in the morning. If SoPo is not on your list of places to visit, add it and get a reservation with Maggie at her newly remodeled cottage.
Portland, ME is the perfect destination for an all-around Maine vacation! Just a couple of short, walkable miles into downtown, the house is situated within walking distance of a number of beaches and within a very short drive of some of the larger beaches in southern Maine. Portland won foodiest city last year by Bon Appetit so there is no shortage of amazing restaurants and cafes to enjoy. You can sail, deep sea fish or just take a leisurely ferry ride on the mail boats out of the Old Port. Local attractions include some of Maine's best beaches, amusement parks, outlet shopping in Freeport (including LL Bean) and lots of museums and sightseeing in Portland.
There are many local public golf courses in the area that are beautiful and affordable. Also, take some time to visit the most photographed lighthouse in Maine, which is just one walkable mile from the house. There are too many local ice cream shops, bakeries, breweries, coffee shops, cafe's and wine bars to mention!
There are also quite a few different ski/ snowboard mountains within an easy drive of Portland, as well as numerous groomed cross-country ski areas as well. You can venture out for the day and drive up to Boothbay to see the amazing botanical gardens and walk through the quaint village, or even up to Camden to visit the Farnsworth Museum, which features Andrew Wyeth's original works.
I have quite a few possible day trips and itineraries in a binder at the house. Of course there's also lots of information on the best places to get lobster - don't worry!
