Cottage, 1 Bedroom + Loft, 1 Bath, (Sleeps 2)

$1400 per week. $900 for 3 nights. See rate details below. Perfect private setting. Enjoy this elegant and secluded guest cottage on this lovely property located on a private point fewer than 100 feet from the pristine Piankatank River. Delightful as a romantic getaway for two. Watch beautiful sunrises over the water and sip a glass of wine on the pier while the sun sets. Open the windows on cool nights and let the gentle sound of waves lull you to sleep. Enjoy leisurely mornings with coffee and breakfast on your private screened porch overlooking the river or enjoy the sunlight on your open deck. Have fun exploring the river and creeks in owner provided kayaks or enjoy the pool in Virginia's warm spring, summer, and fall weather.

This delightful cottage and its lovely surroundings are a perfect base for touring Colonial Williamsburg, Historic Jamestowne, Yorktown and multiple surrounding historic sites. So............enjoy the best of both worlds, tranquil evenings on the river listening to the night sounds and amazing mornings by the river combined with wonderful daytime sightseeing in the perfect alternative to a hotel room.

The Nantucket style cottage on the property grounds has cedar shake siding and roof, walls of windows, and french doors opening onto a 5' x 15' screened porch and 20' open deck. Views out two sides of the cottage provide incredible pictures of the river, the osprey nest, wildlife, and pleasure boats traveling up and down the river. The guest cottage has soaring ceilings, two walls of widows, a bedroom loft, a main floor four poster queen bed, a flat screen TV and DVD, a screened porch, and an open deck all overlooking the river and wildlife. Perfectly romantic for two with one bath and kitchenette.

Enjoy fishing off the pier (right outside your door), swimming in the river or pool (during warm weather), kayaking the river and creeks in owner provided kayaks, and use the cottage as a wonderful location for easy day trips to endless historical sites throughout Virginia.

Bring your boat for sightseeing and fishing on the river and bay. A boat ramp is available just three miles from the cottage and your boat can be docked at the owner's pier. Or sail your sailboat up the river from the Chesapeake Bay. The 11' deep water at the end of the pier at low tide will accommodate large sail and power boats.

The cottage is an easy and picturesque drive (about an hour or less) to Williamsburg, Jamestown, plantations, wineries, and churches. Yorktown, site of the end of the revolutionary War is about a 35 minute drive. Civil War sites, museums and battlefields in Petersburg and Richmond are about 1 1/2 hour drive from the cottage. Norfolk and Virginia Beach is about a 2 hour drive and Washington, DC is 2 1/2 hours.

The studio cottage is the guest cottage on the property. The cottage has hardwood floors, a kitchenette, and a bath on the main floor. The kitchen area has a mini fridge, microwave, sink, portable cooktop burner, toaster, electric panini maker, electric griddle, and coffee maker plus dinnerware and utensils -- everything needed for morning breakfasts and easy lunches. A gas grill on your deck is available for dinners. The screened porch has a dining table and four chairs.

A four poster queen bed, seating area, small dining table and chairs plus flat screen TV are available in the main floor suite. The loft has two twin beds. A window and skylight let loft sleepers watch the stars while drifting off to sleep after a day of sight seeing, boating or lazing by the pool. The loft has a ship's ladder for access so agility is necessary. Adjoining the main floor bedroom is the bath with shower and tub combination.

The property has a lovely oval pool with slate surround overlooking the river and beautiful beds of roses, hydrangea, daylilies and other perennials. The 2 1/2 acre property is located at the end of a two mile long private road for property owners and provides privacy for guests wanting a quiet getaway. Guests have access to the pool, the pier, and the grounds. Runners and walkers will find the two mile road on which the property is located perfect for daily outings. The private road on which the cottage is located contains a number of homes where both full time residents as well as those with second homes enjoy the beauty of waterside living.

Water lovers will find fishing charters, marinas, sailing schools, and kayak rentals close by. The Piankatank River Golf Club provides public golf just a few miles a way. The Historic Tides Inn, site of recent presidential meetings, is located about 20 minutes away in Irvington with spa facilities.

Grocery, hardware, seafood, marine, and gift stores as well as restaurants, coffee shop and post offices are about four miles away in Deltaville. More restaurants, shopping, and antiquing can be found in Urbanna on the banks of the Rappahannock Riveer, White Stone, Irvington and Kilmarnock all within a 15 -20 minute car ride. Gloucester is about a 20 minute drive toward the York River and on the way to Yorktown (site of the end of the Revolutionary War on the banks of the beautiful York River), Jamestown and Williamsburg (55 minutes) via the lovely Colonial Parkway.

About Deena Allen

I am an education and workforce consultant and retired higher education academic administrator who was born in Petesburg, VA and lived in Minnesota for 30 years. I have two cottages available for rent -- one near Williamsburg, VA on the James River and the guest cottage on the Piankatank River. I split my time between Minnesota and Virginia.

Deena Allen purchased this cottage in 1999
Why Deena Allen chose Williamsburg

Lovely area with water all around. The Piankatank is one of the cleanest rivers in Virginia. Close to Deltaville, sailing capitol of VA, about an hour from Williamsburg and Jamestown, an hour from Richmond International Airport, and 2 1/2 hours from Washington, DC. Close to Kilmarnock, White Stone and Irvington -- Virgiia's famous Northern Neck. An easy drive to Petersburg and Richmond for Civil War buffs with sites not to be missed. For wine lovers, there are wineries all around featuring tours and tastings.

What makes this cottage unique

In Whitestone, don't miss dinner at The Sandpiper Restaurant and wonderful wine and take-out foods at The River Market.

In Williamsburg, try the Fat Canery Restaurant for an upscale meal, the Cheese and Wine Shop on Duke of Gloucster St. for great sandwiches to go or to eat on the patio, and our favorite for dinner, Berrets Seafood and Tap House Grill. Enjoy great breakfasts at the Five Forks Cafe near Jamestown Road and lunch at The Old Chckahominy House Restaurant on Jamestown Road with antique and gift shop adjoining.

My wife & I (early - mid 50's) spent a week at Deena's cottage and absolutely loved it. The description and the initial information exchanges with Denna where extremely helpful and spot on. The photos actually do not do justice for the location, and the amenities were complete, new, and perfect - including an unexpected and wonderful welcome basket and fresh essentials in the fridge. We loved the pool and kayaking and would highly recommend this property to couples looking to get away from it all to enjoy a peaceful and romantic time together - we sure did! Great restaurants and shopping all available with short easy drives. We would definitely go back or try one of Deena's other properties. Thank you again for the wonderful time.

Owner's Response: Dear Don & Anette,
I am so happy that you enjoyed your stay and that the weather cooperated so Anette could enjoy the pool. Hope your travels back home went well. I really do miss your daily updates about the weather, restaurants, etc. and look forward to having you visit again.
Warm regards, Deena

Restful Retreat

5 of 5
Submitted: August 29, 2012 Stayed: July 2012
Following a stressful move from the Midwest to Washington DC my husband and I were looking for a beautiful place to go and just do nothing for a little while. After considering more distant beach destinations a friend suggested VRBO. We found a picture of a beautiful little cottage on the Piankatank River in Virginia and were hooked. The location and amenities are well represented by the photos and description and the owner (Deena) has thought of everything you might need for a true getaway. Between the provided snacks, grill and pool, if you show up with a swimsuit, a book and a little food you will be competely set for several days (there is a grocery store near by if you forget something). If you are interested in going out to eat I would suggest checking local restaurant hours – many are closed early in the week and/or have specific lunch and dinner hours.

Staying at the cottage was a wonderful experience. So peaceful and lovely -- just EXACTLY what we wanted and needed. It is a beautiful place and Deena has made it a perfect retreat!

An amazing little cottage perfect for a weekend getaway. The owner has put so many nice touches into the cottage - it’s just perfect. The owner is extremely attentive and responsive. We enjoyed relaxing on the property, kayaking and exploring the area (also recommend the restaurant Merior). I highly recommend. It is also a surprisingly easy drive from DC.

Anniversary Dream!

A wonderful cottage in a wonderful place with a wonderful hostess!! Personal swimming pool - check! A pair of kayaks to go out on the river - check! Great places nearby to get fresh seafood at reasonable prices - check! I could go on and on like this......

We had a wonderful evening at Merroir and really enjoyed the day trip to Tangier Island. Our last morning, we had our coffee on the dock and I kid you not the fish were jumping all around us. There were poles that we could have grabbed but it was just too cool to sit there and watch.......

But mostly we just loved hanging out and relaxing in our classy little cottage. Highly highly recommend!

Happy Couple Getaway

I surprised my wife with a getaway, to the Piankatank River Cottage, for our 10th wedding anniversary. The cottage was clean, beautiful and quaint...we loved our visit. We were fortunate to have nice weather where we were able to kayak, fish and watch the nesting Opsreys each morning and evening. We had a wonderfully relaxing vacation, and the homeowner had all the small amenities we forgot. We would love to visit again, and hopefully have a longer stay.
Williamsburg was just under an hour away, and there was a wonderful fresh seafood market ten minutes away, which was delicious cooked on the grill at the cottage. We would recommend this getaway for anyone looking to relax and recharge their batteries.
Enjoy!
