We are best friends who met teaching elementary school in Southern California. Both single moms, we dreamed of venturing out and buying some investment property on our own. Heddy and I made a few trips to Hawaii with our kids and fell in love with the North Shore. Heddy's boyfriend ended up moving to the North Shore and Heddy soon followed. She called me on the phone one day and said, 'I found the perfect place, and we're buying it!' 2 months later, this beautiful and unique condo was ours!
Owner/Kim Brooks purchased this condo in 2004
We absolutely LOVE this location! I have never been to a more beautiful spot than the North Shore! This location is so quiet and peaceful. The tourists are few and far between. Haleiwa is a quaint little town with great restaurants, shopping, and many water activities! There are dozens of sea turtles to be seen daily. The water is warm, clean, and exhilarating! When my husband and I travel here, we rarely leave Haleiwa Surf, unless we leave in the water on stand-up paddle boards. We sit on the lanai, drink Mai Tai's, and BBQ fresh fish right out on the sand. This is PARADISE!
Haleiwa Joe's is a very short 7 minute walk from our condo. They have great food and great Mai Tai's! Surf'N'Sea is just beyond Haleiwa Joe's where kayaks, stand-up paddle boards, surfboards, and various other water toys can be rented. At sunset, the sea turtles come to rest just 50 yards from our unit. They are stunning!
"I just wanted to thank you for allowing us to stay in your amazing wonderful condo last week. It was one of our best vacations ever. We especially enjoyed seeing so many turtles in and out of the water. What a special place you have there. Also, thank you for supplying the iPod charger. My 13-year old appreciated it very much. Thanks again for a clean, comfortable, beautiful spot to immerse ourselves in Hawaii's magic."
We had a delightful 5 week Jan-Feb stay in the condo. Morning coffee on the lanai, watching the whales spout on the horizon and turtles surfacing directly offshore was wonderful. Very clean and comfy with fast internet and good tv channels. Nicely equipped for preparing and serving meals. Good supply of towels, beach chairs, snorkel equipment and toys. Could use a drying rack for towels and swim suits. The microwave stopped working and very quickly Kim had a replacement. Condo complex is safe and well taken care of. Haleiwa towne is about a mile walk. Being without a car was a little tricky. We took the bus from Honolulu and got off in downtown Haleiwa without knowing where to pick up the bus to the condo. So we walked the mile dragging our suitcases down the bumpy and uneven sidewalk, not fun on a hot day. Sleeping in the bedroom was fine at night as most residents followed the 10PM-8AM quiet rule. The curtains didn't totally block out the hallway lights, but they are good for safety reasons. It was difficult to sleep in the morning as the rooster asylum across the street started up before 1st light. The bedroom faces the parking lot so you could hear coughing, talking, walking, traffic and the ocassional car alarm. We had a great time and plan to return.
Been very busy and a couple months late with this, but my wife and I celebrated our 40th Wedding Anniversary in early August with 10 wonderful days in Haleiwa and Kim's condo was certainly a highlight of our stay. A comfortable and peaceful location to come back to after roaming the island and reconnecting with locations where we spent time back in the mid-'70's when we lived there. The views from the lanai spanning from dawn to dark are truly remarkable, and just lying on the futon bed in the living room at night listening to the soft purr of waves lapping on the beach made for wonderful dreams and thoughts for the next day. We are currently planning on going back in 2015 and will be in contact with Kim shortly to set another 10 day window where we can come share her home again. Haleiwa offers so much we never left the town the last 5 days of our visit...happily and contently spending our time at the condo walking the beach, or just sitting on the lanai absorbing the panoramic beauty lying before us. Plus, the Matsumoto's Shave Ice root beer and vanilla ice cream treat became our daily vitamin...along with so many tasty restaurants with mouth watering menus and a wide diversity of shops and stores to roam.
You will not be disappointment I can assure you. Kim provides a wonderful place to just kick back and take in all that the North Shore offers and she is very accomodating and easy to work with. Made our stay so much more enjoyable to work with someone who truly cares that your time is memorable.
We celebrated our anniversary and my birthday, enjoying 2 perfect weeks here at Haleiwa Surf condos. This is our third time in these condos and first time in this unit. It did not disappoint. In the past we split up our vaca to one week in Waikiki n one in Haleiwa. This year we got it right w 2 weeks in Haleiwa. If you want the true laid back HI vibe this is it. The unit has everything you need, plus 2 bathrooms and 1 bedroom. The town is walking distance, 10 min or a 2 min drive. Plenty of restaurants, supermarket, drug store kayak n SUP rental. The unit has beach chairs, boogie boards n snorkels to use. Your lanai is facing the ocean, the best feature you could ask for. The bed is comfortable and the unit and property are well cared for. We loved our stay here and would come back in a minute. Mahalo Kim. It was the most wonderful vacation ever.
So sorry I took so long to review. This condo was by far the best place we have stayed in our favorite town of Haleiwa! We were pleasantly surprised to see it was newly renovated and so, so beautiful! The location was perfect...just a few feet from the beach. We enjoyed the view from the lanai so much, it was hard to leave there to do other things. We saw gorgeous sunrises and sunsets while sipping our cocktails. We explored the island in different directions each day and had some great meals in Haleiwa Town. We love this place so much, we dream of how it would be to live here!! Kim was great to work with and we can't wait to come back...maybe Christmas this time!
My wife and I stayed in the subject apartment in the Haleiwa Surf condo complex for a week in January 2014, and it was ideal. The two of us are rather jaded retirees, and I have never met a nit too small to pick, but this place was superb.
The owner is experienced and reliable, and the rental process is a breeze. Also, our security deposit was promptly returned.
The online pix are accurate, but insufficient to convey the appeal of the unit and its million dollar view.
1) The apartment is very, very, clean.
2) It is wonderfully decorated, highlighted by a real surfboard as a wall hanging.
3) It is completely equipped. HINT: Upon arrival open all the drawers and cabinets throughout the place to see all the stuff that is available, e.g., Wolfgang Puck bread knife, boogie boards, and on and on.
4) Hot water is hot, and water pressure is more than adequate. Plumbing works flawlessly.
5) Internet functioned without any problems.
6) Cable package from Oceanic Time Warner is extensive with several hundred active channels. HINT: Use your internet device to go to http://tvlistings.aol.com/listings/hi/haleiwa/oceanic-time-warner-oahu/HI51407 and bookmark it for quick reference.
7) Others staying at the complex were well-mannered, considerate adults, and there are posted quiet hours. HINT: If you're a high-volume party dude, go to Hilo; if you have poorly behaved children, go to Orlando.
A few things to do that may not be in your guide book:
1) Get up before dawn, make a cup of coffee, and sit on the beach.
As the sun rises, look up and envision what the sky looked like on December 7, 1941 when two waves of Japanese attack planes used this area as a navigational guide-on and flew directly overhead toward Wheeler AFB and Pearl Harbor.
2) Eat at Tita's Grill in Laie (scenic 30 minute drive, home of Polynesian Culture Center.)
The food is authentic Hawaiian and superb. Be sure to pick up a loaf of Tita's coconut milk bread to bring back to the condo. As a bonus, the owner is often on premise greeting people, and he is Junior Ah You, pro football legend and quite the impressive and congenial individual.
3) Go whale watching on North Shore Catamaran Tours (www.sailingcat.com), a short walk from the apartment. Request a sailing with Captain Don, an expert sailor who could also be a great nightclub act.
4) Bring binoculars to watch the surfers shooting 25-footers from the lanai.
5) Lounge on the beach with a sea turtle.
Thank you, Our Miss Brook!
What a pleasant surprise to arrive and find this beautifully renovated and redecorated condo.
The pictures posted do not do it justice. We have stayed in about 8 different VRBO units in the Islands and this was by far the nicest. The open kitchen and tasteful décor were greatly enjoyed. One could not be closer to the beach. The entire complex is clean and well cared for. Parking is easy! Kim is easy to contact and answered questions promptly. We enjoyed going to Turtle Bay Restaurants (Ola's and LeiLei's). Local restaurants in Haliewa that we ate at were in need of refurbishing. Jamesons has not changed a bit since our last visit in 2001. The carpets need cleaning and the deck needs painting. Haleiwa Joes is drab. We only "do lunch" so maybe we have a different view. The "canteen" at Wiamea Valley is picturesque and a nice place to have lunch. We did find a great parking space at the Stand Up Paddle competition at Sunset and enjoyed viewing it. The drive to PCC is easy and has many beautiful places to stop along the way.
This condo is a place to relax. For those who want some beach and not a lot of the glitz and noise of Honolulu this is the place. It is a quiet area with beautiful views of the ocean and surfers. There were turtles on the beach. Nice walking areas. The biggest drawback for us this year was the weather. It rained about 2/3s of the time we were there. It was warm enough to wear shorts but too wet to sit out on the beach. While there, read two good books that were left in the condo. Great wifi and many TV stations. As a frequent visitor to the Islands, this was a great stay and I would recommend it to my friends.
As far as things to do....there are so many!
Something you must try is stand-up paddle boarding. It is a blast! You can walk down to Surf'N'Sea. Just take a credit card, ID, and the bare necessities you are wearing. (They will hold all of your belongings in the store so you don't need to worry about theft) You can rent stand-up boards there. You can take the boards right out behind the store and practice if you have never done it before. It is easier than it looks. If you are feeling like you have the hang of it, you can paddle up the river right under the Rainbow Bridge. It is beautiful back there and there are so many sea turtles swimming everywhere. We like to paddle all the way back to the condo. The reefs along the way are amazing, and there are LOTS of sea turtles in the open water as well! Then, you can play on the boards all day in front of the condo and practice, and then paddle back to Surf'N'Sea! It really is fun!
Haleiwa Joe's has the best MaiTai's in town! Their Mai Tai's come along with a souvenir cup. Their food is great. The sashimi is so fresh and wonderful! Haleiwa Eats has great Thai food. Jameson's is good. Cholo's is a great Mexican place in the Breakers center (near the entrance to town). Haleiwa Cafe is a MUST for breakfast! It looks like a hole in the wall (it actually is), but there is always a line and the food is great. We always walk here for breakfast. (Again, at the entrance to town) Matsumoto's is worth the wait for their shave ice. It is definitely the best in town. Make sure you put a scoop of ice cream at the bottom. Lui Bueno's is a new Mexican/Seafood Restaurant in town. I have yet to be disappointed there! Great food, great tacos!
Lani's is a famous beach where sea turtles are always found. It is about a 5 - 7 minute drive from the condo. Just drive along, with the ocean on your left, and it will be the first or second semi-crowded beach on your left. You can tell it is Lani's by the amount of tourists. There are plenty of sea turtles there.
Why drive to Lani's and fight your way through the crowds, when you can see PLENTY of sea turtles, right from your own private lanai? Right before sunset, the sea turtles come on the beach to sleep. From the condos, looking towards the water, go to your right, towards Ali'i Beach. You will find lots of sea turtles sleeping. You can't touch them, but they take great pictures!
Standing on the lanai, looking to the left, you will see kite surfers, way out at Kaena Point. Look very carefully...you may see gliders also. We love to drive out there (that is always an adventure, because we always forget how to get there!) You can exit the condos to the right. When the road dead ends turn right. I think you will come to a roundabout and stay to the right. You are looking for signs to Dillingham Airfield. If you go past the airfield, you will eventually see an open beach/park/picnic ground on your right. It is fun to pull in here and watch the kite surfers. Then, we always go back to Dillingham and drive through the airport. They used to keep the original plane from 'Lost' in the back there. It seems to me we didn't see it last time, but we always drive through and look. Often you can see parachuters coming down too.
Turtle Bay is a great place to visit. They have a wonderful bar right on the ocean, by the pool. They have great bar food until 7:00. The sunset views from here are amazing!
Also, the North Shore Shark Tour is so much fun! You can walk to their boat from the condo. They take you out in a shark cage and you see some type of shark out there (not the kind that eat people). When we went, there had just been a huge storm and a dead cow had been washed out to sea. The people tied the cow to our boat and Tiger Sharks were there within minutes! We saw 4 of them, huge, all pecking and eating this cow. It was amazing. I have never been so scared in my life! Anyway, it is a fun experience.
Waimea Bay is a beautiful place to spend a morning. It gets SUPER crowded by 10:00, so go early to find a parking spot. Don't bring anything valuable because there is a lot of theft there. It's close enough to the condo where you could just bring a towel and water bottle and go home before you need money to eat or whatever. Right behind Waimea is the falls area where you can do some light hiking.
Three Tables and Shark's Cove is also just past Waimea. More great snorkeling!
In all honesty, my favorite thing to do is hang out at the condo because it is so beautiful. The beach here is perfect, and there is great snorkeling too!
