Galveston Cottage Rental Photos and Description

2 bedroom, 1 bath, sleeps 4

The Down Home Beach Cottage was completely restored/ renovated in 2008-2010. It is located in the old San Jacinto Conservation District, which is on the gulf side of Galveston's famous historic east end. This area was destroyed during the Geat Storm of 1900, and was rebuilt after the hurricane as a neighborhood of 'worker's cottages' to house those working to rebuild the city. You can still get a feeling from the scale and character of the architecture of this neighborhood what it may have been like over 100 years ago. The San Jacinto Conservation District is a neighborhood in transition. This neighborhood has a 'beach bohemian' feel that exudes a more laid back and slower paced existence- even by Galveston standards! Be prepared for quaint cottage, 'funky beachtown' meets down home Galveston!

The cottage is approximately 1,000 square feet with 2 bedrooms and one bath. During the restoration, layers of materials and additions that were installed over the years had to be literally peeled back to reveal the homes original personality. Original cypress siding, windows, interior doors, and heart pine floors were salvaged, while the kitchen and bath were given substantial updates. The goal of the remodel was to retain as much of the period style and scale as possible, in playing up the charm and coziness of the home. The kitchen is 'cook friendly' in that it is well equipped, with everything at your finger tips. The cottage has a homey, cozy feel; and is tastefully furnished with a collection of flea market, thrift store, and antique shop finds. For ultimate comfort, several new items were brought in.

The garden is planted with a mix of perennials, herbs, and tropicals. Sip your morning coffee while rocking away on the front porch. Private back patio is the ideal setting for bar-b-ques or R & R.

The Down Home Beach Cottage is perfectly located for your Galveston stay. It will easily accomodate groups of up to 4 who are wanting to experience what Island visitors affectionatly call 'The Causeway Effect' !

Wonderful cottage with all the extras

  • 5 of 5
This lovely cottage is just as described. The central air is very efficient and there are lots of windows for light. It is roomy and well appointed. We arrived after dark but the lights were on and the kitchen was supplied with a snack basket and coffee for the morning. We stayed a week and the only thing missing was a hair dryer. This place has real charm: someone with an artistic eye has added interesting details. The location is definitely in OLD Galveston and while there isn't much within walking distance there are lots of restaurants within a couple of miles that are a quick drive. We went to Sunflower Cafe several times and loved it. Also Mosquito Cafe, Saltwater Grill and, for the special birthday dinner, Rudy and Paco which was wonderful. Even though it is a tourist town, people in Galveston were friendly and helpful. The immediate neighborhood is one "in transition." This cottage is one of the best houses on the block.
There is a small barking dog next door which was sometimes annoying but not it was not enough to keep me from highly recommending this cottage. A great value.

Cozy Cottage

  • 4 of 5
This little cottage was very nice, clean and welcoming. The beds were comfortable and the little "extras" left in the kitchen were a nice addition. We brought our dog with us and were very happy that both the back and front yard were fenced allowing us to let the dog wander without the leash. This cottage is just a short walk or quick drive to the beach for those who just want to have a "laid back" vacation. The location of this property is close to many attractions and restaurants. I would recommend eating at Olympia Grill in The Strand District. Great service and great food. Medicinal Purposes is a nice little neighborhood bar and grill with a homey feel. Moody Mansion and Bishops Palace are great attractions if you enjoy touring old homes with a great deal of history. The Drill Rig Museum and the Underwater warfare center are also interesting attractions. We enjoyed our stay and would recommend this rental to others.

Perfect!!!

  • 5 of 5
The Down Home Beach Cottage was definitely COZY! I am so glad I chose the cottage for a week long vacation with my daughters. The cottage was very charming. Beds were very comfortable. Many of the "appliances" one has in their home were provided at the cottage. This made our stay very relaxing and comfortable. Additionally, the cottage was very well kept and clean.

Location wise, the Cottage is situated in between the historical Strand area, East and Stewart Beach and the Seawall Boulevard. This was perfect for planning outings to the different areas. There is an Arlands Grocery Store nearby and prices are in line, just in case you want to grocery shop when arriving. Instead of lugging groceries, like I did.

Nearby discovery:
1. Sunflower Bakery and Cafe - Crab Cakes and Eggs is a must! Kids and kids at heart will enjoy the Chocolate Chip Pancakes--my daughter declared,"the best ever!"

2. For history buffs: The Bishop Palace. Take a trip back to Early-Glaveston and the crown jewel residence. Stunning architecture and history.

I look forward to returning in the near future.

Our Stay

  • 4 of 5
The property was just as we had hoped, light and airy and roomy enough for our family. Unfortunately, the kids in the neighborhood had a toy gun that they filled with a rock and shot it at the living room window on the last night of our stay. The window pane was cracked as a result. I hope the neighborhood continues to renew in a positive manner.

everything we hoped for and more

  • 5 of 5
Everything was spotless, kitchen had coffee and spices needed for cooking, a little basket of goodies awaited us. Beds were very comfortable, an overall wonderful experience. I would highly recommend this property. The attention to detail was very good, right down to pamphlets of places to go. 3 blocks from the gulf, and not that far from the Pleasure Pier.
