The Down Home Beach Cottage was completely restored/ renovated in 2008-2010. It is located in the old San Jacinto Conservation District, which is on the gulf side of Galveston's famous historic east end. This area was destroyed during the Geat Storm of 1900, and was rebuilt after the hurricane as a neighborhood of 'worker's cottages' to house those working to rebuild the city. You can still get a feeling from the scale and character of the architecture of this neighborhood what it may have been like over 100 years ago. The San Jacinto Conservation District is a neighborhood in transition, which boasts a 'beach community' feel that exudes a more laid back and slower paced existence- even by Galveston standards! Be prepared for quaint cottage, 'funky beachtown' meets down home Galveston!

The cottage is approximately 1,000 square feet with 2 bedrooms and one bath. During the restoration, layers of materials and additions that were installed over the years had to be literally peeled back to reveal the homes original personality. Original cypress siding, windows, interior doors, and heart pine floors were salvaged, while the kitchen and bath were given substantial updates. The goal of the remodel was to retain as much of the period style and scale as possible, in playing up the charm and coziness of the home. The kitchen is 'cook friendly' in that it is well equipped, with everything at your finger tips. The cottage has a homey, cozy feel; and is tastefully furnished with a collection of flea market, thrift store, and antique shop finds. For ultimate comfort, several new items were brought in.

The garden is planted with a mix of grasses, perennials, herbs, and tropicals. Sip your morning coffee while rocking away on the front porch. A back patio is planned to be completed by early summer for bar-b-ques or R & R.

The Down Home Beach Cottage is perfectly located for your Galveston stay. It will easily accomodate groups of up to 4 who are wanting to experience what Island visitors affectionatly call 'The Causeway Effect' !

The Down Home Beach Cottage is located on the gulf side of Galveston's historic east end, in the old San Jacinto Conservation District. This home is mere minuites from the bustling downtown Strand shopping district and cruise ship terminal on the harbor side (north), and 3-4 blocks from the beaches and restaurants along Seawall Blvd. and Galveston's gulf side (south). Stewart Beach and Porretto Beach are a 4 - 5 block walk south and east from the cottage.

Spend the day shopping the art galleries, antique shops, and whimsical store fronts of the lively downtown area. Numerous restaurants offering an assortment of choices are within a 1/2 mile radius. 'Mosquito Cafe', 'Pattycakes Bakery', 'Sunflower Bakery and Market', 'Original Mexican Restaurant' to the north; 'Benno's Cajun Seafood', 'Gordita's Mexican', 'Mario's Seawall Itallian' (great pizza), and 'Russo's New York' Itallian to the south... just for STARTERS! Visit one of the grand homes along Broadway to really appreciate Galveston's place in history, or take in The 'Galveston Island Historic Pleasure Pier' (scheduled for completion by early June, 2012), all just minuites from your doorstep!

Moody Gardens aquarium and rain forest pyramids, Schlitterbahn Waterpark, and the municipal golf course are within a 15 minute drive to the west end. And then there are the miles of sandy beaches...

Relaxing Stay at Beach Cottage

This beach cottage was the perfect cozy spot for a weeklong vacation with my parents and two year old daughter. We especially enjoyed the big tub and washer/dryer. The cottage was clean and the yard was beautifully kept with lots of plants and flowers. The owner was available and helpful each time I called with questions. The beach was a short walk, which was perfect for the fourth of July; we were able to see the fireworks from the seawall at the intersection of 14th Street.

The Mosquito Cafe is just a few blocks away and served a great breakfast, and the pizza at Russo's was delicious. Most of our time was spent at Moody Gardens (I would recommend a yearly pass to get into all of the attractions). My only complaint is that there was a swarm of mosquitoes greeting us on the porch each morning and evening (although that is pretty normal anywhere in Texas in the summer).

Quick-Get-Away

This was a lovely home with charm, comfort and convenience. The initail reaction to the home was that it was clean and perfect for what we were looking for. During out stay, we barbequed in the back yard (but you will need "Off" or some sort of misquito spray b/c it's Galveston), took a nice short walk to the beach and made several meals in the kitchen. The owner provides everything you may need to cook with during your stay. It is very convenient. He also added a very nice touch by leaving coffee, snacks and even doggie treats for our pup. I have stayed at The San Luis, The Galvez and several beach houses on the west end but we are looking forward to staying here again on our next visit. I would absolutely recommend this rental.

Cute and well-equipped

The Down Home Beach Cottage was exactly as described and more! The place looks just like the pictures and was very well stocked for our stay. My husband, two college age daughters and I really enjoyed being close to the beach and the activities along Seawall. The house itself had everything we needed. It was nice not to have to bring our own beach chairs and we took advantage of the grill and nicely equipped kitchen. The beds were comfortable and the house was clean. The window units had no problem keeping up with the summer heat. The front porch was the perfect place to read a book or just enjoy a refreshing beverage.

We enjoyed deep sea fishing with Get Hooked and our surfing lessons with C-Sick Surfing.

Bill (the owner) was easy to work with.

Graduation weekend

I would highly recommend this house for a weekend getaway. This was my graduation weekend and I wanted a house with room for myself, my boyfriend, dad and brother. Everyone had space and it was a great gathering place for lunch after the ceremony. We had the rest of my family over and the yard was big enough for us to grill out on the grill provided. I'm keeping this address my list of places to stay now that I graduated and moving off the island to Houston :(

Nice cozy cottage!

This cute cottage did not disappoint! Close to the beach, only a few blocks - easy walk! Little front and back yard were nice for the kids! Felt right at home and really enjoyed our stay!
