Tamworth Lodge Rental Photos and Description
8 Bedrooms / 4 Baths with a maximum overnight capacity of 14 persons
'This 8-bedroom, 4.5 bathroom summer mansion is nestled in the woods on a 10-acre estate at the top of a hill. Located at the border of Lakes Region and the White Mountains, it is steps to the lake and a short drive to many hiking options. It includes a private clay tennis court and semi-private (one other family) swimming with a private boathouse on beautiful Lake Chocorua. The 60-foot-long living room houses two grand pianos. Many of the furnishings are original to the house. The wrap-around porch provides room for entertaining or just taking in the natural beauty of the site. At the lake, there is a canoe, a dinghy, and a private raft in addition to the boathouse. No motor boats are allowed on Lake Chocorua.
This estate is steeped in history. It was designed by the well-known architect C. Howard Walker for himself in 1892 and is featured in Summer Cottages of the White Mountains and Chocorua Lake Basin: A National Historic District. Walker's granddaughter, Kay Hubbell, the Wimbledon finalist, grew up playing tennis on its clay court. The house is currently owned by the heirs of Richard T. Gill, the renowned Harvard-economist/Metropolitan Opera bass, who purchased it in 1964 and summered there for over 40 years.'
Please note that this antique country lodge has country plumbing. The four full baths have the original clawfoot bathtubs. As such, showering is possible in only one of the bathrooms, which has a pull around shower curtain over the clawfoot bathtub. Original sinks and toilets also add an air of authenticity to the home and all its splendor.
