AUTHENTIC, BOLD, BEAUTIFUL, SIMPLE, WITH EXTRAORDINARY VIEWS ALL OVER GOZO

Kercem Farmhouse Rental Photos and Description

4 double/twin bedrooms each with en-suite bath, shower or wet room, sleeping 8

Our home is a 100-year-old Gozitan building in stone and wood converted into a simple and visually breathtaking house, respecting the initial dimensions and intentions of life in a quieter century, and yet with all modern comforts : fitted kitchen (with microwave, dishwasher etc), ceiling fans, television, and courtyard with swimming pool. There are extraordinary views from the two terraces in addition to a 360° panoramic view over the whole of Gozo, the sea and the straits to Malta from the pergola and BBQ on the roof garden (which extends over the complete house). This view from the roof is absolutely world-class, and you will never tire of it. On a clear day you can see as far as the Dingli Observatory on Malta (35 km), and with binoculars follow bird movements. Little light pollution means the stars are a wonder at night - the roof makes a perfect place from which to gaze.

Our Maltese home is warm and welcoming, and you will find it difficult to leave when your stay is over!

Quiet and Relaxing: Do not come to Gozo seeking night life and discos! These can be found if you look, but the beauty of the island is its major attraction. In winter, savour the sun in sheltered corners, and admire the play of light on the stone. In autumn and spring, go for unforgettable walks in the strong, stark landscape (which in spring is covered in a profusion of yellow and red wild flowers); and swim all the way through to the beginning of November. In summer, the extraordinary heat is tempered by breezes from the sea, and you have the high stone-walled rooms, the cool pool, the sandy beach or the rocky coves to take refuge. Make yourselves a barbecue on the new built-in barbecue and eat it on the roof garden terrace (romantic lights provided!) or in the courtyard at night-time in the quietest environment imaginable, under the twinkling stars, and you truly have a holiday which will last not a week or two, but all through the following winter in your memories.

Courtesy and Friendliness in Another Century: Living or staying in Gozo is like stepping back into another century. All the advantages of modern life are there, but the essence of the island is peace, quiet and relaxation. Life is cheap and simple. We recommend you buy Maltese produce as much as possible - Maltese wine and (Cisk) beer are excellent, and cost a fraction of imported equivalents. The Gozitans (and the Maltese in general) are extremely welcoming and friendly. They (nearly all) speak English, so you will be able to get to know the local people much more easily than on most other Mediterranean islands. Road signs, public notices, restaurant menus etc are all written as a matter of course in English; there are Maltese English-language newspapers and magazines, and you can buy English newspapers on the same day as in England, including Sunday papers. If you don't wish to cook for yourselves, the island has a large number of superb restaurants to fit all pockets.

Why not Venice ?: Our family also has a property in Venice . Why not look at this too? Our Venice property is number 9359 ON THIS WEBSITE.

We hope you will like it!

A PLACE TO REMEMBER

  • 5 of 5
The owners passionate description of their property caused me to enquire about renting it for our holiday and from where we would leave to be married. When the owners heard that we were planning our wedding they were extremely helpful in sourcing and providing local information and expressed their pleasure that we chose their property to be part of our special occasion. Excellent customer service from the owners - above and beyond what we could have hoped for or indeed expect. They recommended the restuarant that we chose to be married in and where we held our reception. Ta Frenc was fabulous and we cannot recommend it highly enough. A perfect place for a special occasion. They also recommended the car hire company who met our every need and we would certainly use them again, and also visited the Registrar on our behalf.

The farmhouse is unique and quirky with interesting features, so don't expect the ordinary. The kitchen is a perfect size for a family with a beautiful white Gozitan floor, maybe not so family friendly though. The courtyard is pretty and private with a good sized swimming pool - perfect to cool off in. The rooftop garden is a splendid addition and somewhere to retreat to in the heat of the day or to watch the glorious sunsets or see the island light up at night. We had some of our wedding photographs taken on the rooftop with the panoramic views as our backdrop!

The property was clean and well maintained with everything as promised. The couple who look after the property for the owners are friendly and very helpful, and just a phonecall away if help is needed.

We were pleasantly surprised with the selection of restuarants across the island. The visitor information in the farmhouse gives many ideas and recommendations. For a surprising and tasty meal try the little restuarant, not signposted at all, in Kercem at the football ground/playpark area. Ask the couple who look after the house for directions. We had a lovely simple meal, not expensive, and the owners were very attentive.

We had a wonderful holiday and loved Gozo.

I would recommend this property not only for the attention given to customers by the owners but as a perfect and quiet base from where to visit the surrounding towns, beaches and visitor attractions or to spend a relaxing and comfortable holiday.

Only one suggestion for the weary travellers arriving would be to provide a basic food basket e.g. tea, coffee, milk, bread.

Owner's Response: It is our pleasure to make all our visitors as welcome as possible and to do our utmost to make efficient and straightforward arrangements. This is the case for weddings, honeymoons or, of course, plain holidays! We realise that people have saved up and looked forward to staying in our house, often for many months before coming, so we try to make our own love of our house and our island infectious and communicate it before you come. All are welcome - do come and try Ir-Razzett tal-Huttaf and Gozitan hospitality for yourselves :)

The best place to spend a relaxing holiday

  • 5 of 5
We had a fantastic summer holiday 2012 in this marvelous old farmhouse in Kercem. We had ten relaxing days in quiet surroundings. We really loved it. It was a perfect way to get away from our daily hectic living here in Norway. The island of Gozo was quite different from other places we have visited, in a positive view. The Farmhouse is aperfect place to stay. The terrace on the roof is a great place to spend the evenings. Here you have a 360° view and the lights in Victoria and the Citadel is wonderful in dark evenings. Here you can see the sun falling into the sea and if you are up early enough you can see it rise from the sea too.
We experienced the local festas with fireworks every day and the procession from the church with holy statue was spectacular.
The house, the private pool, the yard room, the terrace on the roof, the big kitchen, the bedrooms; it was all perfect and so was our local contact who did everything to make our stay the best.
But driving a car in Gozo was special. Narrow, bumpy roads and left side driving and traffic rules that didn’t work made it quite exiting to drive around the island.
We will be back!

Owner's Response: Many thanks to our careful reviewer who has noted all the things that we too love about our Gozo home : the terrace is indeed absolutely wonderful, and can furnish enough dreams to last all through the dark winter months. Who could ever forget the warmth of the Gozo nights in our roof garden, with the fantastic views, a glass of white wine in the hand, as you sit surrounded by family and friends?
Summer time is festa time in Gozo, and you can relax and watch the fireworks all over the island without moving from our terrace. Or you can go to the celebrating village and experience the procession of the church statue and dignitaries close up. The choice is yours!
Right now, in the Northern Winter, we are looking forward so much ourselves to our Easter return home to Gozo : if you choose to spend your holidays in our farmhouse, you will not regret it, and you can experience all our reviewer says as well as making your own discoveries.
Do come and see : we will make you really welcome :)

A great spot for a quiet holiday

  • 5 of 5
My family (2 adults, 2 teenagers) stayed at this property for five nights and ended up wishing we could have stayed longer. The house is exactly as advertised so maybe I can mention a few things not listed.

Contact with the owners was excellent: prompt, clear, and easy. Although there were only four of us the house could comfortably host eight. Three of the four bedrooms are at different levels off a central staircase so there is privacy, but also space for everyone around the kitchen table (the blue bedroom is off the kitchen.) We were there during a hot, hot summer but didn't end up using the a/c because of the thick walls and ceiling fans. But it was good to know a/c was available!

The house is in a quiet spot, on the edge of a quiet village, looking out on fields almost all around. There's a language school and another rental nearby but we didn't hear them. The pool is enclosed by walls so expect privacy but not a view at ground level. Climb up to the roof and bedroom terrace for the sights - they're just like the pictures! Sitting up there and watching the sun set and the lights come on across the island, sometimes fireworks going off later (it was festa season,) was a highlight.

The wifi worked well for email and checking on local events, although get the password from the owners before you arrive or… you can't email them for the password! The local caretaker was also helpful and nice to chat with, without being obtrusive.

I'm pushed to think of any downsides. Being near the fields seemed to encourage mosquitos; bringing some bug spray might be smart. And there was the occasional farm vehicle rattling by early in the morning. The roof terrace was quite windy on a couple of days; during the day that kept us cool but it was too strong later on those two nights.

I think the Maltese tourist board owes the owners and their Gozitan friends some thanks for helping to make our first experience of Gozo (and Malta) such a memorable one!

Owner's Response: Many thanks to our careful reviewer - it is certainly good for us to know that all we say about the house is true and that it turns out to be an excellent experience!
If you forget to email us about the wifi password, don't worry : we have left our mobile phone number and so you can get it with a quick text message :)
The view from the roof terrace is indeed fabulous - for those windy evenings we provide another smaller barbecue down in the courtyard, next to the swimming pool, so you can still go ahead with your plans.
The countryside location does come with both farm vehicles and some bugs - but we hope you agree with us that these are both better than continuous city traffic :)
We look forward to hearing from anyone who would like to experience our brand of Gozitan and Maltese hospitality. You would be very welcome indeed.

Einfach super!

What a beautiful setting for a honeymoon!

  • 5 of 5
When trying to decide on a location for our honeymoon in Europe we came across this house in Gozo. It turned out to be the perfect house in the perfect location. It was peaceful and tranquil exactly what we were looking for. The house was stunning, and the pool area was perfect to cool off during the hot afternoons. The owners coul dnot have been more helpful when arranging our stay, they provided us with local knowledge and advice which was really helpful.
I would recommend this house to anyone planning to visit the wonderful island of Gozo.

Notes:
Our home has a courtyard with many plants, swimming pool & barbecue; there is also a roof garden with barbecue. Gozo is an ideal get-away-from-it-all destination: as life moves at a slower pace you will quickly unwind and you will be able to relax either by the pool or at Ramla beach (15 mins by car). You can also bathe from the rocks at local Xlendi Bay. As the house is in a quiet rural area, you will need a car - we can recommend an excellent car rental service from about €30 per day. We also know a diving school, so can put you in touch with them - they do a one day sampler course, and PADI open water/advanced open water courses can easily be fitted in to one week. Two of our Gozitan friends look after our house for us. They are our guardian angels and will quickly become yours too! Bring your own laptop and/or smartphone and connect via WIFI to the Internet totally FREE. AIR CONDITIONING is available if you want against a modest charge (€5/day).HEATING : €10/day.
