Spicewood Estate Rental Photos and Description

5,000 sq feet home perched over the Pedernales River with breath taking views

Outback Pedernales Retreats is where rustic elegance meets relaxation. Nested in the Texas hill country 15 miles outside of Austin it offers a tranquil and meditative retreat from the hustle and bustle of city living. Outback Pedernales Vacation Home is on the grounds of a private estate in the hill county of Spicewood, Texas. It's a perfect place for couples, girls and family get aways or while attending the numerous music events such as Austin City Limits coming in October, South by Southwest in March or Formula 1. It also has just the right amount of sophisticated, beauty, nature and space to hold magical weddings, anniversaries, family reunions or office parties. (different rates and stipulation apply for weddings). Vacationers looking for hidden gems will be pleased at what this special private getaway has to offer. You will find picturesque views, boating, swimming, fishing, inspiring rock formations and romantic waterfalls. Truly a photographers paradise.

The back yard contains a 1,500 square feet deck that is perfect for late night, morning and weekend dining. It is also fabulous for dancing, entertaining and receptions. The deck overlooks the Pedernales River and the beautiful hill country terrain. In our opinion downstairs along the river banks is one of the most meditative spots in the Hill Country. You can feel the Native American spiritual presence and from time to time spearheads have been discovered. This a a perfect site for a vacation you won't forget.

About Gail

Outdoors, sports minded, adventurous, with a desire to live life to the fullest.

Gail purchased this estate in 2005

Why Gail chose Spicewood

I wanted acreage and water for boating, a safe space to raise kids, and and as close to nature as possible without being too far from the city and job site. I also fell in the love with the kitchen, with it's sleek modern and classy amenities such as the double refrigerator, compactor, and wine cooler. And the backdrop of mirrors instead of the customary tile had me taken at first sight. It will capture your heart as well. But it is really the knowledge of knowing that this property is part of history. As you descend downstairs to the outback boating dock you can't help but feel the spiritual vibrations of the earlier native American who once lived here. There are small niches in between large rock formations where you can picture their everyday living . Such as the outdoor cooking and sleeping quarters. You also get a glimpse of what it might have been on the battle field of the early Texas and the Apaches with each side holding their ground on their side of the river. I have been told that it is common to find arrowheads on the grounds and banks of the river and other archeological finds. I feel it a honor and a blessing to safe this private sanctuary.

What makes this estate unique

What soothes my soul is the tranquil and peaceful sound of the outdoor waterfall as I rock on the back porch or sit on the front porch overlooking the oak trees. At the same time it's a great place to have a party. I bought this home to have family reunions and outdoor parties as well. It's private and no body will tell you to turn down your music or call the cops.

Everything I expected and more

  • 5 of 5

I went there last weekend with 11 of my friends to have a bachelor party weekend. The house is as advertised. Plenty big with really nice furnishings. The pool, the location, and the game room were the highlights for me and my friends. You feel like you're away from civilization, but not so far that you can't get to a Whole Foods in ~30 mins. The owner did a good job of showing us all the amenities, and then trusting us to take care of the house the rest of the weekend. This place had been personally recommended by 2 of my friends (who came on this trip) and I would personally recommend it to any of my friends with a big group that wanted to get away for a week/weekend. I'm already talking about coming back with my fiance (soon to be wife). Thanks Gail!!

Owner's Response: It is truly a pleasure hosting great vacationers and you were no exception!! I'm encouraged, my spirits are lifted and I vow to continue my strive towards offering my special family of vacationers a unique and personalized experience. Can't wait to meet your soon to be wife. Why not bring her here for your wedding party, honeymoon or anniversary? Referrals are one of the best form of compliments. For this I say "Thank You". Hope to see you soon at your "Home Away" from home.

Nice Get Away Property

  • 4 of 5

Listing was as described. Gail communicated via email and text, and was very good turnaround responses. She was able to meet us at the rental when we arrived and gave a tour. Site was in good condition for the age and area it was in. Location was easy to find using either apple map or Google maps. Most of everything worked. Kitchen was decently stocked with the minimum. We utilized the pool/old grill/hot tub/fire pit. We used the ping pong table/pool table and air hockey table. We explored the Hamilton Pond and the parks around the area. The walking trail was a easy trail, but not much of a trail since there is no water etc. Nice area to look at though. Air conditioner is not central style. It is via floor vents. The 1st floor had a/c but the second floor does not have a/c and needs to use the wall mounted a/c. The game-room window mount did not have a long enough plug to turn on. The time we went it was okay, but I can imagine hot summer could be an issue. Overall decent place if you want to do a small gathering. The place is on the older side, but has a nice country feel. Be sure to read the rules prior and everything will be okay. The water is soft water. In Houston we are used to the regular unconditioned water. There was enough towels and the kitchen was clean. Gail was very helpful and nice. Grass/plants/lawn were in good maintained condition. The playhouse area is not really recommended because of the loose door hinge and insects that may have made a home in it etc. Just be careful, since it is outside in the nature etc. The balcony and porch area was nice to relax around.

Owner's Response: Thank you Michael, I enjoyed having you as an exclusive vacationer of Outback Pedernales. One of the benefits of sharing my home is that I have an opportunity to interact with people representing cultures from all over the world. And I enjoyed talking to you. Interactions help to break down walls and stereotypes. It’s interesting you mentioned the upstairs air condition and the broken hinge on the playhouse. I find it quit coincidental that we just had these items fixed last week in anticipation of the summer. I too was happy to remove these items from my list. Come see us again, you were a joy. I wish you and your brother all the best in your future marriages. May they be , happy, prosperous and lasting. All the best.

Extremely Disappointed

  • 1 of 5

I only write reviews when I am extremely impressed or extremely disappointed. Unfortunately, this rental left me the latter. When we arrived the a/c had apparently not been on long. It was 80 in the home and several windows were open. It wasn't until the next day that the home was comfortable to be in. The "game room" was never comfortable our entire stay. The homeowner "greeted" us by scolding us about the front door being open (we had literally been there 3 minutes and we had 9 people coming in and out). The "tour" of the home was even less impressive. The lawn was being mowed and the pool company was to show up later in the day (pool was filthy). We were warned about the railing on the balcony being unstable, oh and by the way, you have no hot water in the master bathroom. We were assured it was just the master that had no hot water, so while not happy, we kept the tour moving. Later that evening we found that only one bathroom in the house had hot water. That left 9 people to shower in one bathroom. We were taken out to the deck and lead down the stairs that were to take us to the "river". The stairs were rickety at best and the weeds and bugs were horrible on the trail. There is NO "RIVER". Don't be fooled by the "water is low" warning. There is NO water and I don't think there has been for years. No canoes or kayak's as noted under amenities for this property. In fact, I would say that 75% of the amenities listed were not found on the property or were broken. The home itself is dirty and in need of interior paint and repairs. This home is NOT in any way shape or form wheelchair accessible. In the end, we had a fantastic time with family and friends in Austin regardless of all the faults in this rental. However, if this were the first time I had used Homeaway we would never use it again. Not only were we scolded by the homeowner we were repeatedly told we were "just too citified". The homeowner couldn't believe we were not oh-ing and ah-ing over her run down property and her less than welcoming attitude. Another issue we had was that the homeowner showed up out of nowhere on the property every day of our stay. We enjoy our privacy. We were assured by the homeowner that she would not be present for our stay. We were never offered any concessions for all the issues we had. The owner was defensive and filled with excuses. However we were assured the next renters would have hot water. Lucky them.

Owner's Response: NOT A VICTIM ANY MORE….We have been able to find good in this malicious review. Although there was hot water in other parts of the house on hindsight we should have addressed the broken hot water heater problem differently (we were pretty new in the business at that time). We are definitely not dirty and by NO means should be rated less than 4 . On a positive note we provided freshly cut grass a sparkling clean pool, delivered brand new umbrellas, and tried to see our vacationer off with a departing group picture. Currently everything works and we have plenty of hot water. Out of this experience we are working hard to provide our guest a 5 star experience and our reviews reflect this with the exception of this one, and our hearts are warmed as our vacationers return the following year sometimes the same year. Our referrals are outstanding and I foresee that some where in the future all bookings will be available only through the referral process. We now have Inn keepers who manage and care for the property full-time. The future looks bright! Although this guest was mean spirited, angry, exaggerated the facts and aimed to harm us, I am thankful that her comments actually proved to be the catalyst that moved us forward. So you really can turn lemons into lemonade. For that I'm thankful and look forward to the day you will experience this magical place we call Outback Pedernales.

Probably not again........

  • 3 of 5

We spent a weekend at this property with 8 adults. The property overall is beautiful, the house itself needs maintenance in certain areas. The beds were comfortable and the linens were clean. The pool is lovely, but given the time of the year and cold water temperatures, we were not able to take advantage of it. The hot tub was really nice. However, it is advertised to hold upto 8 guests, but can hold about 4 comfortably. Three of the four bathrooms do not have any locks on them. The common bathroom downstairs between the two bedroom did not shut properly. The media room was very well equipped and cozy and excellent for watching movies. The owner was very thorough but had a lot of "rules" and appeared to be irritated because we had not reviewed her rules prior to meeting her. We tried to abide by them but some of them seemed a little over the top. We had a great time there but did not appreciate being talked down and treated like kids. This property probably would not be our vacation destination again in the future.

Owner's Response: Inaccurate comments... "The Grandee Spa, with its expansive, Barrier-Free design, provides plenty of room for a party of seven. We have had up to 8 guest in it. We don't have a lot of rules. NOTE: It appears that many of you want to know what the rules are… So here are the FIVE House Rules. 1. No Smoking in the house (this is lenient, with many other properties it's totally smoke free .2.) Remove shoes ( we have carpet and don't want fleas ticks, dirt or mud tracked into the house. 3) No children under 10 left unattended in the hot tub house. 4) No drinks on the pool table. 5) Close the front door at all times ( for the protection of our guest from pest and unexpected critters in the house). Check out procedures - we ask that you straighten the house back before you leave, put your dishes in the dishwasher, take out the trash to the trash bend and bring your towels to the laundry room. As you can see we were unfairly judged because someone didn't read the check out rules or want to remove their shoes. The rules are also in the contract, before you are allowed to book. We're very transparent and up front with no hidden agenda's. I've been pleased with the respect all guest have had regarding the house and will never speak badly of anyone. I've never had a reason to complain or get irritated and that's the way I like it positive, serene and very special.

A Beautiful home...What a wonderful getaway!!!

  • 4 of 5

Me and the most handsome man on earth were dreaming of a wonderful weekend wedding at a beautiful home with a backyard ceremony and reception. We were hoping for a pleasant and sunny but not too hot day. However, mother nature had other plans in mind! Even with the weather being extremely chilly and off & on scattered showers, it was magical and perfect! The home was just as it appeared online... if not, even better in person! There was adequate space for our small intimate wedding and lots of beautiful scenery to captivate your mind as you relaxed from the week! Loved the Decor... The kitchen and the hot tub!!! The owner of the home was extremely helpful her customer service skills are phenomenal and she was always eager to help when needed and answer questions! I would definitely recommend this place to someone I cared for...friend or family and of course we hope to stay there again in the future.... Anniversary perhaps! :)
