MENEHUNE [meh-neh-HOO-neh]-- Hawaii’s legendary mystical and shy forest dwellers are small in size at about two feet high, although some are only six inches high. They live in the deep forests and hidden valleys of the Hawaiian Islands, far from the eyes of normal humans. According to legend they are very industrious master builders that use their great strength to accomplish mighty feats of engineering and construction overnight.
In that spirit, we welcome you to 'MENEHUNE MANSIONS'... which to the UNMYSTICAL HUMAN, would appear to be A VERY SWEET FOREST COTTAGE.
Minutes to Hawaii Volcano National Park and tucked away in the uniquely beautiful forest of desirable Volcano Village.... you will come home to a tropical, clean, fresh, warm and cozy hideaway... for a menehune mystical price
We have so enjoyed our second home and very well received vacation rental Maile Treehouse which is also in Volcano Village.
We thought we would like to offer a more budgeted alternative but with an upscale experience... It has been a true delight to help make a vacation special for people... we hope we can do that for even more travelers now....
Leslie Hess purchased this cottage in 2012
Oh... My... Gosh! What a lovely place. Everything was perfect. We really enjoyed our stay here. So quiet and homey. The binder you've made was great, so much time was put into it, and it was very helpful. So close to the park and a short drive
to Hilo. Our original honeymoon was cancelled because of hurricane Sandy- it was a blessing in disguise as we would have never gotten to experience this 'home away from home'.

How do I describe this cottage in the rainforest? One word "wow!" We had a wonderful stay here! The little touches you have put into the place are awesome! Love the owl in the tree, all the little notes around, the decor is beautiful and the visitor
book was so helpful! We loved visiting the park w/ the hot spring pool of water. We would recommend this cottage to all our friends and we hope to return in the future! We had a very relaxing stay and wish we could stay forever! ps the bed was

The friendly helpful owner and caretaker make this clean and well outfitted cottage a visitor's sanctuary. Furnished with attention to comfort and convenience. There is a full cooking kitchen (stock-up with provisions in Hilo before you arrive), a helpful area guidebook created by the owner, a dehumidifier that keeps you warm and dry, hooks, drawers and closets for storage, nice outdoor furniture to enjoy birdwatching, reading or just soaking up the rain forest surroundings. This cottage is conveniently located just miles from the entrance to Volcanos National Park so you can avoid some of the crowds and get there early for a morning hike or stop in after dark to admire the glow from Kilauea's crater. Wonderfully clean and well maintained. I would highly recommend!
"We loved the cottage. Cute, clean and perfect size for us. The location was wonderful. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay."
We loved this. Leslie, the owner, should work for all the major hotel chains. She is an expert in providing perfect accommodations. Wish I could give this 10 stars.
What a great place! My wife and I found the accommodations to be absolutely perfect. We particularly njoyed the little touches: books about the little people, the little bench, the little door outside. Magical and charming. Leslie also provided a wealth of information about the town: where to hike, restaurant recommendations, etc.
The quiet surroundings, the birds in the morning, the lovely porch formorning coffee all added to a great couple of days. We hiked, saw the lava glow, dinner at Lava Rock Cafe, and sandwiches from Cafe Ohia -all made for a great stay.
We stayed here for 4 nights as part of a 3-1/2 week stay to Big Island over the Xmas holidays. This is a beautiful cottage to use as a base for exploring the Volcanoes National Park. Spotless, nicely appointed kitchen, comfortable bed and pull out couch, lovely landscaping – nice lanai but a bit too cool to take advantage of in December! Electric blanket and cosy gas fireplace were greatly appreciated. Excellent value for such a high quality property. Location is unbeatable especially for Kilauea night viewing. Loved the little town with funky art studios and cafes. Be sure and have a meal at Volcano House in the Park.
We stayed at the cottage for two nights and it worked as a perfect home base as we checked out the volcano national park. We wish we would have had a bit more time to thoroughly enjoy it, but it was a great place to come home to after a long day of exploring. Very peaceful property and we loved listening to the birds in the forest.
We had a wonderful experience staying at this cottage and visiting the park. It was clean, warm and inviting. Though a bit off the beaten path, the directions were easy to follow. Two of the nights we were there, we returned to the park to view the glowing lava pool in Kilauea Crater. The nearby Kilauea Lodge serves a superb dinner. Excellent communication with the owner.
