Berkeley House Rental Photos and Description
Gorgeous 5 Bedroom, 2 Bath Home, Sleeps up to 12, Close To Campus
Rent this tastefully furnished and beautifully appointed, large 2-story 1908 Craftsman vacation home by the night or by the week. Recently restored and upgraded, decorated with a mix of antiques and artisan furnishings, and outfitted with high quality bedding, this home feels more like an upscale historic inn than a typical vacation rental.
This house has a great location just 10 miles from downtown San Francisco, within a half mile of the University of California, Berkeley, and just steps to nearby shopping, dining, and recreational opportunities. Literally right around the corner you'll find delightful shops, restaurants, and grassy parks. This is a perfect place for families visiting their Cal students, professional staff attending conferences, and families on vacation.
We provide everything you need: plush towels, luxury linens, first aid kit, soaps/shampoo, fully equipped kitchen with cooking supplies, free wi-fi, free worldwide phone calling, and a full lineup of cable TV channels, including HBO, sports, and movie channels.
With great public transportation, Zip Cars nearby, and easy walks to amenities, you don't need a car. But if you have one, we provide one off-street parking spot with the rental, and we can sell you one additional street parking pass per day. Street parking is plentiful and free overnight and for 2-hour increments between 9 am and 5 pm. Ask me about nearby parking garages and BART parking for additional cars.
A family dinner, brunch, or outdoor BBQ is a great use of this home. But if your group is looking for a place to get loud and party, or treat the house like an event hall, please choose another vacation rental. This home is located in a quiet, family neighborhood with school-aged children living next door and limited parking, and we're conscientious about being good neighbors. The two bathrooms cannot accommodate large gatherings. Therefore, we have an upper limit of 20 people on the property at one time. We also have a special rental agreement addendum for outside visitors which must be added in order to host visitors at the house. The owner lives nearby enough to know and intervene if a renter decides to ignore this restriction, so please look elsewhere if it won't work for you.
- A well-organized, clean, fully equipped chefs kitchen with microwave, 6-burner oven/stove, large fridge, stainless steel pots and pans, utensils, serving dishes, wine glasses/corkscrew, a breadmaker, a blender, a coffee grinder, a large electric roasting pot, and recycling/composting bins.
- A cozy living room with cable TV and radio, comfortable seating, travel books, tourist guides, maps, magazines, games, and the Sunday San Francisco Chronicle.
- A spacious, clean dining room, with a large dining table that seats 12 people (bistro tables can be added to seat a few more).
- A lush, green, private yard with teak outdoor furniture.
- An airy front porch with seating and tables where you can take your breakfast or enjoy a quiet glass of wine in the ambiance of this mixed student/family neighborhood.
- Two bathrooms with tub & shower, privacy screen (for multiple users), hair dryer, storage baskets for your things, plenty of plush bath towels and hand towels. Color-coded towels, lots of storage bins and closet space, and makeup mirrors in your room make bathroom sharing easy.
We supply families with a Pack N Play, a basket of plushy toys, children's books, board games, cards, outlet covers, table corner bumpers, and bed-wetting pads. We also have picnic blankets and beach towels you may use for your outings, perhaps to the large, grassy park just 2 blocks away. The spacious backyard is surrounded by a high privacy fence with gate latches, providing plenty of space for kids to run off their excess energy. We're family-friendly but we expect families to keep the running, wrestling, and play-fighting outdoors. This house was carefully restored, furnished with beautiful antiques, and outfitted with high quality bedding and decor, which can be damaged by indoor rough-housing. In addition, the wood floors and wood stairs carry sound to the attached caretaker's apartment, so letting kids run wild indoors here is too disruptive.
All of the rooms are super clean and absolutely gorgeous, with comfortable and interesting high quality furnishings in matching color schemes, and completely uncluttered. All bedding is new, with goose down and feather pillows and comforters (and alternatives if you're allergic), pretty duvet covers and bedspreads, and high quality cotton sheets. Each room has its own iron and ironing board, hair dryer, mirrors, hamper or laundry basket, and extra blankets and throws. Several rooms can accommodate more than two (with our futons and cot) and one of our rooms accommodates up to 6 guests.
Bedroom #1 - THE WILDCAT CANYON ROOM
17 ft x15 1/2 ft (263 square feet)
(Sleeps 6 in 4 beds)
This is the largest room, with a king sized bed (sleeps 2), a futon sofa (sleeps 2), a twin futon (sleeps 1), a chair futon (sleeps 1 child, narrower than a twin), a sitting/social area, and a large, walk-in closet converted to a small bedroom. Large windows on two walls flood this room in natural light, which you can block with the curtains.
If you're traveling with children, the anteroom of the Wildcat Canyon Room, which we call 'The Little Farm,' is equipped with two small futons (a twin futon and a chair futon) which can sleep two children.
The room's namesake, Wildcat Canyon, is a valley just east of the Berkeley Hills where visitors love to go hike and picnic along Jewel Lake and Lake Anza. Wildcat Canyon was named for the mountain lions which used to be fairly common in the area.
Bedroom #2 - THE MUIR WOODS ROOM
14 1/2 ft x 12 1/2 ft (181 square feet)
(Sleeps 3 in 2 beds)
This is a large room with a comfortable queen-sized bed (sleeps 2), a chair futon (sleeps 1, narrower than a twin) that can also serve as a sofa (opened and with back pillows against a wall), a desk and chair, a dresser for your clothes, end tables and lamps.
The Muir Woods Room pays homage to Muir Woods National Monument, the cathedral of redwoods located 25 miles west of Berkeley, which was established in 1908 when President Roosevelt signed legislation to protect an old-growth coast redwood forest from destruction.
Bedroom #3 - THE ROSE GARDEN ROOM
13 ft x 10 ft (130 square feet)
This pretty room is furnished with a gorgeous and comfortable queen-sized bed (sleeps 2), an antique Victorian armchair, a dresser for clothes, end tables and lamps.
Named after the Berkeley Rose Gardens, it features floral rose decor and antique wooden dressers with hand-painted roses.
Bedroom #4 - THE BAYSHORE ROOM
21 ft x 10 ft (210 square feet)
This bright, airy room is a sun room with wrap-around windows, a comfortable queen sized bed (sleeps 2), a folding cot (sleeps 1), a teak cabinet with drawers for your things, which opens to become a desk, a teak chair, and end tables and lamps.
This room is an homage to the bay area's coastal environments, from the bay shores at the nearby Berkeley Marina to the crashing waves of the Pacific Ocean against the rocky shores along Highway 1.
Bedroom #5 - THE ANGEL ISLAND ROOM
7 ft x 10 ft (70 square feet)
This tiny room is big enough for just one person. It has a twin bed, an antique secretary desk, a chair, and a small teak hutch that can also open out into a desk.
The room is named after Angel Island State Park, a 1.2 square mile island that accommodates over a hundred-thousand visitors annually from all over the world.
CLEAN AND GREEN
We provide green living supports (recycling, composting, chemical-free bath products, etc.). Guests clean up after themselves unless you add optional maid service. The house is deep-cleaned and sanitized between groups. Cleaning products are chemical-free and unscented (Seventh Generation and Dr. Bronners), so you'll smell only the fresh air.
The house is located approximately 1/2 mile south of University of California, Berkeley; just a few blocks from the popular Telegraph Ave, College Ave, Claremont Ave shops and restaurants; and 10 miles from downtown San Francisco. Public transportation, walkable shops and restaurants, and Zipcars are abundant nearby.
Some of my reviews mention breakfast. Breakfast is not automatically provided, but can be added for an additional fee. Other optional services and supports (when available/possible and by advance arrangement) include catering, maid service, linen service, laundry service, bicycle rentals, camping gear rentals, beach gear, picnic/lunch baskets, gift baskets or flowers for special occasions, and airport pickups. We need at least a week's notice to provide these optional services.
Parties, large events.
More than 20 users at one time.
Moving the furniture.
Smoking, drugs, incense.
Toxic products (e.g. pesticides, bleach).
BUDGET & BARTER OPTION
Because I've received numerous requests from budget travelers for discounts, you may have the option to rent some of the rooms and not the entire house, or the bedrooms & bathrooms only (no kitchen, dining room, or living room) at a discount. There may be opportunities for other discounts, barter, or house trades. Just ask!

About Amy Belanger
I'm a writer and nonprofit professional who moved to Berkeley in 2010 to enjoy the beautiful natural setting, abundance of cultural opportunities, and open culture. In my downtime, I live a quiet, low-key, healthy lifestyle, and relish the simple pleasures.
Amy Belanger purchased this house in 2012
Why Amy Belanger chose Berkeley
Berkeley offers the quintessential 'good life.' Berkeley is just across the bay from San Francisco, so we have easy access to its cultural opportunities, festivals, and other advantages, while enjoying a break from the noise, traffic, and crowding of the city. With most every kind of natural area (parks, coastlines, redwood forests, mountains, and even high desert) within a short walk, train ride, or drive, there's no place better to experience the great outdoors. Many Berkeley neighborhoods have the charm, safety, and ease of access of a small town, while also bringing the benefits of a major metropolitan area. This neighborhood (Elmwood) is one of them.
What makes this house unique
This property fulfilled my quest for the perfect house in which to host travelers seeking a unique, beautiful, and family-friendly stay during their Bay Area visits. This house stood out to me for its gorgeously restored Craftsman architecture and interior design features, its large and beautifully modernized kitchen and bathrooms, its historic significance (built in 1908 in the Julia Morgan style), the opportunities it provided to furnish and decorate for a sense of both home and luxury, and its location close to UC Berkeley and the Elmwood shopping and dining district. I've created here a unique, old-world inn feeling.
I fell in love with the:
- Huge, plate glass window in the living room which overlooks the garden, letting in lots of natural light and lush, green views.
- The lush gardens and sitting areas to enjoy the sun, read alone, or socialize with friends.
- Beautiful, hardwood floors and natural wood elements throughout.
- Big, bright windows throughout fill the home with natural light.
- Modernized kitchen and bathrooms with contemporary lighting, sinks, commodes, and showers, and a deep, resurfaced antique clawfoot tub, is the perfect merging of the modern and the historic.
- Inset lighting, most on dimmers, which allows you to create the ambiance you like best: soft and romantic or bright and alive.
- Wide hallways which provide a spacious, open, airy feel as you walk through the house.
Guestbook comments from the manager
This is a wonderful vacation home. There were nine of us so we had rented the whole house. There was more than enough room for all of us. There were only two bathrooms which, at times, was challenging, but it all worked out fine. Our host, Amy, was great! She gave us a tour of the house upon arrival, she answered any emails or texts within 30 minutes and overall, made us feel so welcome. The house has everything you could want - fresh linens, towels, an abundance of kitchen appliances, bread, fruit, plates, cups...the list goes on and on. The location of the home worked out well for us. It's about 30-40 mins from SFO airport and downtown San Francisco. You're also about an hour from Napa Valley. On a side note, if you're new to the SF area, traffic is just terrible during rush hour times (7-9am; 3-6pm) so beware. The house was wonderful and Amy has set the bar pretty high. Thank you Amy!
