We also have our German Shepard, "Betty" for extra safety...
The Farmers market on Thursdays is a wonderful way to meet the locals, buy your fresh fish (very innexpensive), your fresh fruit, and fruit you have never had before perhaps, like 'guanavana' or 'mangostein' ...both with abundant healing powers....Enjoy the Adventure!
Near here there are buses to everywhere, to the coast to the mountains, to all parts of the country. By bus, the beach, Playa Dominical, is about 1.5 hours, and, although, a bit long, the ride is a delight in beautiful views. At the beach there is surfing, fishing, eco tours with canopy trips, scuba diving, swimming, horseback riding, etc., plus lots of restaurants, bars, various stores.
Staying at the beach, however, can be an unpleasant experience if your sheets are damp, if the noise bothers you, if the price is quite high....And the temperature is too very hot for you.....for these reasons you may want to visit, and stay with us, where the temperature is perfect, not too hot, nor dry, the price is reasonable, the sheets are dry, and downtown is near for convenience, and so are the beaches and the highest mountains.

This small river also has little waterfalls, that act as massage agents for your feet, for your shoulders. There are little pools formed for swimming. In the evening the 'Chitarra' (large bug) puts out a marvelous sound (cannot describe), announcing the upcoming chorus of frogs, and crickets. The sounds are beautiful, and you will sleep like a baby, as the river lulls you to sleep.
We are a family of four: Mom and Dad and 2 respectful kids.
We love to meet new people and help them discover the many wonders of the area. We have information about the reserves, the birdwatching, the beaches, the mountains.
We are located 3000 feet above sea level, about halfway between the highest Peak, Mount Chirripo (natl park), and the Beach at Playa Dominical. Near are natural reserves for hiking for birdwatching. And when you return to your cottage, it is cool breezes, riversounds, the frog concerts. Downtown is but 10 minutes away, and the bus service (close) is convenient and often.
If there is any way we can make your stay more comfortable, and more enjoyable we will be happy to do so. We have maps, and information from actual experience, and can help you and guide you to your most enjoyable possibilities during your stay.
My wife is 'Tica' Costa Rican and Lovely. I am an Expat

We hope to see you soon, and wish to serve you as our esteemed guests.
james purchased this cottage in 2006
We used to live just up the river, in a small little house. When this property became available 8 years ago, we knew that there was none like it. We have 3,500 meters, a large 2 story chalet, and One Rental: The Garden Cottage (Studio Home with deck).
This property is unique for 5 reasons.:
1. It is only 10 minutes to San Isidro, a town that has everything.
2. It is secluded and private and secure in a good neighborhood.
3. It has perfect weather, not too hot, nor cold, just right.
4. Bus service is excellent, no car is needed.
5. Our main house is all natural, hardwoods and stone, with patio and balcony overlooking the river..
We could say more about this beautiful country that has no army and that has an incredible variety of birds, and fruit, the iguana and the whitefaced and howler monkeys. There are wonderful places to go, like the beach and the rainforest, and the tallest peak, Mt. Chirripo And in addition to the great location of our property, we cherish the very nice people throughout this country, who are friendly and willing to help, and who appreciate those who try to speak the Spanish language.
We are so very grateful to be here in this unpolluted region, with fresh air, and river sounds to sleep by.
What a Beautiful Country! with Such Beautiful People!
It is a great honor and privilege to be here.
All who have been here agree that our location is one of the most beautiful places in this country, and in this Area. And that this Country is one of the most beautiful places on the planet for a great many reasons.
This is a perfect little house, near to everything, and yet very reasonable to rent. Compare to Any Other Rental. A hotel will rent a room for about the same price, or more...but it is Only a room. And this is so much better. It is a complete house, well furnished, nice kitchen, all utensils, dishes, etc. And it is quiet with perfect weather, not too hot, nor cold. You will find that you that you can use this as a base to travel, without costing you
lots of money.
While many who come to Costa Rica will prefer to stay at expensive hotels at the beach, or Homeaway rentals there,
Those who stay here will not have the noise, nor the heat, nor the damp sheets to deal with. Those who stay here will hear the 'Chitarra' (large bug) as it announces the evening with the following chorus of frogs and the beautiful concert at night. You will sleep like a baby as the river lulls you to sleep. In the morning you will see a treasure trove of rare and exotic birds. They will announce the morning.
Here, we have a best bed, 'Jiron' brand. Excellent, and very comfortable. Coffee will be provided, Fruit Bowl upon arrival,
and all the information you may need to plan your days here.
My wife has been here, in this area, all her life; and I have been here for 18 years. We know the area well, and can help you with your dreams for travel and experiences.
A visit to the river, right below us, can lead you to the natural 'jacuzzi s' for your tired feet, or your shoulders; and there are small natural pools for a pleasant dip.
A trip to the Ferria (farmers market) is a delight.
20 minutes from us is the Bio Reserve 'Fudebiol' where you can hike and enjoy the beautiful views and rare animals and birds and flowers.
There is a lot more that could be written about the benefits of this region, the 'Brunca' region and it's unique history, but that may need to wait for your visit, or your research:
When we booked our week at the Garden Cottage, James sent us detailed and helpful information on getting a taxi at San Jose airport, finding the correct bus terminal and safeguarding our belongings while en route. From the beginning we felt that our communication with James was very good, and by the time we arrived we knew that we could rely on him to be honest and helpful.
And our arrival at the cottage couldn't have been nicer. James was there to greet our taxi, help with our luggage, and introduce us to our new home. His thoughtfulness in providing basic start-up necessities in the kitchen, delicious Costa Rican coffee, and a bowl of fresh fruit, was very much appreciated by 2 weary travellers. He gave us a quick orientation, left us to settle in and delayed the business aspect until the next day.
The cottage itself was clean, comfortable, nicely furnished and decorated, and had everything we needed. We felt at home right away. And the setting couldn't have been better....quiet, restful, birds chirping in the trees, a babbling brook nearby, an outdoor deck to enjoy our morning coffee, while indoors we had all the conveniences of home, including a phone and reliable wi fi.
James came by the next day to see how we were doing and to give us information on buses, stores, nearby attractions, San Isidro restaurants etc. On Thursday, he accompanied us to the Ferria (farmers market) and acted as our guide and advisor as we navigated our way through the many stalls selling wonderful fresh produce, fish etc.
We had a wonderful holiday here, and would definitely recommend it to family and friends. And if we're back in Costa Rica again, we will certainly stay in this little bit of paradise! Thank you James for your wonderful hospitality.
We made an immediate connection with James on our first email. He was amazing with all the arrangements and directions. James and his wonderful family gave us an authentic C.R experience, complete with great local bird watching on the site and at Los Cusingos (absolutely awesome if you are a birder/hiker) only 20 minutes drive away.
James was so kind to provide basic herbs and essentials. The rest could be bought at the local store, only 10 minutes away. The community is quiet, safe and friendly, local store 100m away. The whole enclosure was very safe, secure and insect free. The river is soothing and the stars are great.
We made a wonderful connection with James, Rocio and the boys and were made to feel part of the family.
The weather is perfect because of altitude, perfect for sleeping.
Look no further this is the place to go!!
I just returned home from a wonderful 10 day trip to San Isidro, Costa Rica.
I stayed in this darling cottage, and couldn't have chosen a better place to be! It was comfortable and clean, with easy access to the town of San Isidro, by way of taxi ($6), or by very nice public buses that ran regularly by the cottage for a fare of .35 -.50 cents!
This lovely little oasis is surrounded by beautiful flowers and greenery, close to a river that was delightful to play in and listen to, while lying in the hammock during the day or falling asleep at night. There are a variety of colorful birds that come to eat the fruit placed in the feeder and the natural background sounds are so soothing!
...and talk about fruit! I've never had so many choices of fresh fruits and vegetables in my life! Attending the Market on Thursdays is a must! There are many restaurants, shops, and just about anything else you could possibly want in town. The roads are well maintained well, and the drives breathtaking!
Jame and his family couldn't have been more welcoming or helpful. They are an incredible family!! I will definitely come back for another stay!
Near to the National Park, Mount Chirripo Highest Peak in Costa Rica. 45 minutes to Park Entrance. Also wonderful surfing at Playa Dominical, Eco Tours, Howler monkeys, Whiteface monkeys, Toucans, Canopy Tours, Horseback Riding...all within 45 minutes
